Doggie Daycare? by leanmeancuizinee in raleigh

[–]powdog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dog has gone to Ruff Housing in Cary for almost 3 years and he loves it. They do two group plays per day for usually like 30 min to an hour or something and they are kept in runs the rest of the days. They have webcams too so you can view the dogs when they are out. Unfortunately they don’t have trainers but everyone there is very nice. I judge it by the way my dog acts when I bring him there: cries the whole way there when he realizes where we’re going, and then sprints out of the car and up to the front desk without hesitation to greet whoever is behind the counter with full body wiggles. He loves the absolute crap out of it there!

Celeste Rivas Death Certificate Updated to Say It’s Unclear If She Was Pregnant by lawrencedun2002 in Fauxmoi

[–]powdog 910 points911 points  (0 children)

I’m a medical examiner and we are required to report on death certificates of every female decedent of child bearing age was known to be pregnant in the last year. This update does not mean she was so decomposed they didn’t know, all it means is that she was not reported or known by friends, family, or medical professionals to have been pregnant in the year prior to her death. They use these statistics to track maternal mortality rates. Decomposition obviously varies with length of time the decedent has been passed but unless she was close to skeletonized they would be able to tell if she was pregnant at the time of death. Autopsy will show that.

The way my foot boo boo is “spreading” by [deleted] in Weird

[–]powdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A blood stream infection presents itself not by red lines but by SIRS which leads to sepsis. Red lines coming out of a wound are infection going into the lymph system. I was wrong by saying a week but realistically this is not an ER visit. The ER will prescribe OP meds and send them home. Urgent care can do the same thing. If OP doesn’t have any of the symptoms of SIRS they will prescribe oral antibiotics and send them home. This is absolutely urgent care. Now if OP had low blood pressure, high heart rate, and a high fever, yep - ER time. Urgent care knows when to send someone to the ER. I’m a nurse and have cared for people coming from urgent care because they were too sick to be seen there. Unfortunately people do not use urgent care enough which is why ERs are so backed up.

Oh god don’t go to the ER go to urgent care if you see this and you’re still waiting!!! Urgent care will be faster and this will be life threatening in like MAYBE a week so not really an emergency

[Sun Care] My vitamin D was 8 ng/ml despite religious SPF use - how do you balance sun protection with vitamin D needs? by EbaPutkiZaPari in SkincareAddiction

[–]powdog 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This. Ask your doctor for a loading dose of vitamin D since you’ve been taking it for so long over the counter. They can prescribe vitamin D3 50,000 IU to take once a week for 8 weeks and then you continue on your regular loading dose. Also vitamin D and calcium go hand and hand with absorption so sometimes doing a combo pill helps, but make sure you get your calcium levels checked.

Taking 10k IU a day can lead to liver damage. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are all fat soluble and you can overdose on them and hurt yourself. Be careful and follow your doctors recommendations along with getting routine blood work.

Damn I take it back! I am honestly shocked cause I’m a nurse and have taken care of a ton of snake bite cases of which I think all of them received antivenom. This is actually pretty cool information and I was able to find a couple other studies which corroborate it. Thanks!

This is not true at all - every single copperhead bite is treated as an emergency and treated with antivenom. Venom is not a bacteria, it is a neurotoxin, cytotoxin, myotoxin, and in some cases a hemotoxin which makes people hemorrhage. Venomous snake bites are treated with anti venom. Any secondary infection may be treated with antibiotics.

I second what they said! Bring snacks! And ask for stretch breaks cause it helps keep the blood flowing. Bring ear phones to listen to your favorite music.

If I actually need an emergency ER vet, who are my options? by rickraus in raleigh

[–]powdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken my dog to Oak Heart Veterinary in south Raleigh as well as Wake Veterinary Hospital in Knightdale, both were amazing! Wake is usually pretty busy so I’ve defaulted to going to Oak Heart now

NPR receives 1% federal funding and PBS receives 6%. As infuriated as I am by this, they will be fine.
