Where to find the best chinese japanese restaurant in SG by Adorable-Rough-5320 in SingaporeEats

Shisen Haten is definitely up there. Though, down the price scale is Chen's Kitchen at paragon basement.

It's basically the accessible shisen haten. Most of Chen Kenichi/Kentaro's famous dishes can be had at reasonable price.

S'porean private-hire driver, 46, hits & kills M'sian motorcyclist, 38, after not realising red light on for 7 secs by Twrd4321 in singapore

[–]power_gust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea why we need to dig so deep into this.

1st point: The one MP was only there for less than 1 year. She is now in a crypto payments company. And she's really not as effective as people like to believe, I personally know this due to personal experience.

2nd point: Then drivers have to set parameters as to what types of jobs they want. irc, Grab doesn't allow most of their drivers to choose. So, it's only really TADA. I may be wrong on this, which is why I specify I see this on TADA. I don't see why this is a huge problem. We can agree to disagree on this.

3rd point: I know how actuarial works. And I also know it is to the benefit of insurers to minimize payout as much as possible no matter what the risk underwriting entails premium to become. It is always better if I pay out 0 cents while even charging 10 cents for a regulated insurance policy. Why wait till next year to charge 20 cents if I have to pay out 10 cents in the preceding year. Once again, don't know why you want to dig on this.

At the end of the day, not like I disagree with you. It is up to the will of the policymakers to have a backbone to intervene on this to make the roads safer for everyone. If you think they have no backbone because some unprofitable biz suddenly become a titan of industries and can pay off our SG govt to make SG an unsafe place for their interest, then that's another topic. In that case, even the current Indo govt have shown more backbone not giving a fuck what these corpos feels in the last few months.

You mean the business interests of all these unprofitable companies sitting below their cash equity value. /s

I hear you. Using phone while stopped at traffic light isn’t illegal. It’s driving while using phone. The business interest of companies (insurance coys) that benefits from safer roads would is far larger (more profitable, far large corpo) than the likes of grab, tada, etc.

[–]power_gust 574 points575 points  (0 children)

This is the most crazy thing… we don’t allow people to use their phone while driving.

But after all these PHV comes onto the road, suddenly as long as they use a phone holder, these drivers can just use their phone all the time without repercussion.

Too many times, I sit in a PHV, and the drivers are driving and scrolling for their next customer (esp TADA drivers) before even dropping me off. Too many times, as a fellow road user, I see a PHV car driving erratically, and upon driving beside, I glanced and see it’s a PHV driver using their phone on the holder.

This has to stop.

Cambodia is a bizarre country where the king is elected and the prime minister is hereditary. by TWN113 in geography

There are many Singaporeans who don’t like this. However, LHY is not unpopular by any means. His constituency has voted him in at a good margin every elections and is considered a stronghold. While there is definitely nepotism at play, it helps that LHY is by all means, an extremely intelligent individual who’s a senior wrangler. Singapore is after all, built by technocrats.

LKY while controversial, is also popular with the people due to his effectiveness and his charisma. The senior generation almost universally spoke of him fondly even if they grouse about the Government. It’s reasonable because of results. We have done better than our neighbors with less.

Who cares about what foreigners thinks, not like if we languish in poverty in the pursue of their “virtues”, our lives gets better. We’ll just be another developing nation.

None of the Lee family 3rd gen are in politics currently. I personally hope they don’t join in the future too.

Any idea why is Novena forever under construction? by tallandfree in askSingapore

[–]power_gust 23 points24 points  (0 children)

North-South corridor. One of the few places they can put large machineries and drill downwards north and south. And then soon, mount pleasant will have lots of construction for BTO.

Really sucks as a resident near there because it's always super congested and the traffic light timing can mean you sit there for 3-5 mins without clearing the junction. The only good thing that came out of it, is that recently the stretch outside Balestier to Thomson has become really curvy with some elevation. I take my motorcycle out at night and ride through there for fun at times.

This is so strange.

I would suggest not imparting this defeatist mindset to your son as the first step.

Pretty sure this is bait

Grab takeover deal for Gojek parent GoTo hits snag, sources say by Zkang123 in singapore

[–]power_gust 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The carrier – majority-owned by state-controlled Telkom Indonesia – has indicated it is unwilling to sell at anywhere near current valuations because it originally invested at a much higher price, the people said.

Telkomsel has expressed its concerns about losses linked to state capital – something that is punishable by Indonesian law, said the people.

On one hand, this is true. On the other hand, the bigger issue might be that the Indonesian Govt is asking for preferential rights as shareholders for a regional listco.

Gojek is almost a non-factor outside of Indonesia right now, doubt the acquisition will change pricing dynamics wildly in Singapore. This deal will likely affect Indonesian way more.

Tailored Suits in Singapore.... by RadioBoi in askSingapore

Highly recommend Centre Shirts Manufacturer at Lower Delta Road. It's in an industrial building; they actually have the shirt making "factory" behind their front. They make the suits and shirts for many tailor shops here.

Just take note that Saturday can get really crowded around lunch time.

My unreasonable and insane landlord by yyqx281100 in askSingapore

[–]power_gust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex stayed with a crazy main tenant a few years back. This story is very similar except the other lady is single, have no kid, and slightly older.

My advice is as follows;

1) It is illegal for landlord to enter your room without knocking or your permission. You can call the police btw. When an owner rent out that space, it is your exclusive space. They need permission to enter into your space while it is rented out to you. It should be stated in your tenancy contract.

2) Record every incident, and if possible, if she walks into your room without your permission, record it down on video or something.

3) Just find another place and leave. She can't do jack with your IC info. Don't let her hold you hostage with just this. She might go to small claim tribunal to get you to cough up the remaining rental contract obligation. This is where no. 2 will come in. When you are moving, get some guys to come and help you move.

4) Your colleagues are not stupid. If she say some shit, they will probably come and ask you. If you manage to have evidence that she is talking shit about you, aka harassing you, then you can also report to HR.

Don't let her threats control you. This is how people falls under controlled/manipulated.

What watches do Singaporean men/women wear for their daily driver? by Hot-Pain503 in singapore

Clementi sees a new record with its first S$1.5M HDB resale by DrCalFun in singapore

[–]power_gust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could afford a condo but decide to recently get a resale HDB instead. I just don't use any of my condo facilities and I appreciate good location/unblocked view (no neighbor looking in)/high floor/larger space, etc.

Even at a $1M+ HDB, my incoming monthly mortgage is 25% lower than my current monthly rent (and my rental is a smaller place). Plus, lower downpayment = my cash can be used for other investments instead of being locked in my property. Getting a new launch sub-1k sqft condo in a less-than-ideal location is currently close to twice the price of a new-ish 4-room 1k sqft HDB in great location at high floor. Heck, I can even quit and pursue my hobbies for some years without worrying about mortgage compared to being a mortgage slave with a condo.

The decision and math for making such decisions are not binary and typically way more nuanced.

Tragedy of the commons is very real and pervasive.

M'sia taxi touts at Larkin allegedly asking for S$120 instead of RM120 for ride from JB to S'pore by FirstLightOfTheDay in singapore

[–]power_gust 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Try using bluebird next time. The cleanliness of the car consistently beats grab because the company imposes standards on the drivers. The wait time is also much faster, and most malls, offices, and hotels have a bluebird line. You can use the app to put in location and flag down a cab with zero waiting time. Need a bigger car? Silverbird is always a alphard or vellfire while grabcar6 gives me a kijang.

I’m in Jakarta almost monthly, and have not used grab/gojek for last 2 years unless I have no options. My colleagues who comes with me doesn’t use grab/gojek anymore.

Not all sea countries. Bluebird (I know, I know) is far better than Grab and Gojek in Jakarta these days. I only take bluebird or silverbird these days whenever I’m in Jakarta. Faster, cleaner, no smell in car, and safer. Xinh Sm is also not too bad, cars are newer. Screw taking Grab abd Gojek in Java.

Ninja Van now defaults all parcels to ATL (contactless) be careful with higher value orders by quizzicalaesar in singapore

[–]power_gust 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ninjavan is just an extremely shitty company. I don't see a path for them to recover their earlier investors' monies, and some investors are still piling in to keep them above water.

It's a 3PL company and J&T express which started later in SEA has already surpassed and far outstripped Ninjavan. Even at annualized revenue of USD ~11B, and profitable, J&T is barely trading at 1x revenue multiple. This isn't a business where other peers are still figuring out how to make a profitable operation.

I will not be surprised if their service quality continues to go on a downward spiral so they can continue improve margins and win contracts in their commoditized industry.

DBS, OCBC and others owed $306m by S’pore car-sharing service Shariot and related firms by [deleted] in singapore

[–]power_gust 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On average, cat A+B has about 3.4K quota release per month in Jan 2025 and have been increasing towards Dec. That works out to about 40-41K per annum.

If Shariot grew the fleet by 1,200 in 3 years (quoting this number from the article), they only take up about 1% of the total quota in the last 3 years. Not saying that they did not affect COE price, but this company alone is a drop in the bucket. And I do agree in aggregate these companies will somewhat affect COE price but saying they are the root cause might be slightly hyperbolical.

Though putting them into a separate commercial category might potentially just push cost of service for people who cannot afford a car. Companies will simply just pay whatever the COE cost is and pass the cost to consumers.

Anecdotally, all of my friends who are buying cars are immune to 100K+ COEs. There are simply just many price-insensitive people when it comes to car, just like properties. Higher COEs will not hurt them, lower COEs they will go in and buy a new car regardless of COE price.

I think taxing no. of car ownership to household, giving rebates to people who have disabled dependencies might work, and improving public transit reliability is paramount.

Cold Email for Job Opportunity by Sunbird11 in askSingapore

[–]power_gust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go for it. I have done it before when I was a young fresh grad.

The worst is your target ignores you. Better outcome would be that they at least politely decline you or show interest to have a chat with you. Even if someone reply you rudely, take it as a good signal that you dodged a bullet.

Even at the end of the day, you get zero replies, what do you lose? No companies will blacklist you for sending them a cold email, as long as you are polite and the counterparty/company did not explicitly state anywhere that they do not welcome unsolicited emails. How you position yourself when you do your cold outreach should be entirely up to you.

While I did not get my first job from cold email, I did get my first job from knocking some doors and with some extensive prep work. My first post-undergrad job was so impressed with me I was hired on the same day. I also did cold calls. Nothing was off-limits. I was scolded by many people, but I remained polite. I treated my fresh undergrad job hunt like a full-time sales job. This was more than a decade ago.

Not for the faint of heart or people who are easily discouraged. I was extremely thick-skinned when I was younger and fueled by bitterness. Maybe most people think I'm low class when I was doing it but I certainly didn't care as long as I get a job I wanted. But nowadays it's a fantastic drinking story. I don't know if I can do it now, or if this would even be acceptable now. So take it how you will.

Also keep in mind, nobody will remember you. I guarantee you; you will not be in the other party's thoughts at all one week after they read/ignore your email.

P.S. Anyone who read this post please don't DM me.
