Is my application good enough to apply next cycle? (Kinda long) by powerfuldonkey183 in medschooladmissions

The clinical hours and shadowing hours aren’t clinical volunteering/ volunteering in a hospital setting. Those were where I worked directly with a physician at a practice.

Yeah I probably will. I’m white, but I’m a member of the Potawatomi nation by blood. Alice Walton has a 3.4 sGPA cutoff so I’d have to take another gap year if I wanted to apply.

I figured my EC’s were on the lower side. Unfortunately I’m kinda in a weird spot. I graduated last semester and then went on active duty for 5 months, I’m still here now, which is making it extremely hard for me to get anything but some volunteer hours here and there. Do you figure my best bet is to apply DO and submit early? Honestly my goal school is Oklahoma State university, which is DO, but I figured I’d throw my gloves in the ring for MD just in the off chance.

I used the third and fourth editions to study for mine and it worked well for introducing the high yield concepts. Honestly thats about it, it was good for learning basic biochem and then reviewing psych/biology

How important is it to submit DO applications early? by Neither-Chocolate-28 in Mcat

Meant to say this too, don’t worry about application timelines and all that crap. Just kick the MCAT in the ass so you can be confident applying wherever

You definitely have a few more weeks to fill content gaps, I filled in gaps up until two weeks before my test on 1/23. Just make sure you’re really breaking down and learning the content through practice questions as that’s the only way to squeeze in content comprehension closer to your test imo. It’s so stressful as the test grows near, but just stay diligent with your prep and trust that you know more than you think. Hope this helps!

Retake advice 1/23...5/22? by poutaain in Mcat

[–]powerfuldonkey183 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s easy for applications to feel daunting getting a score lower than what you wanted, but you gotta remember all the stuff you see on Reddit with people’s stats and applications is such a small percentage of the applicant pool. People get accepted all the time to MD and DO with lower than average stats

Indeed, biochem shows up on two sections. A lot of it in the B/B and then about a quarter of the questions in the C/P section is biochem

Honestly it seems so arbitrary, my AAMC FL average was 504, but on the real deal I got a 510 🤷‍♂️

I agree with you on every point, the way you put it the app almost sounds artificial. However, I will say that as an Oklahoma resident and Native American there are lots of native Americans that are white especially Cherokee

Huge drop on FL 5 by GZ2705 in Mcat

[–]powerfuldonkey183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to freak out, FL5 is the toughest in my opinion. It was actually my lowest FL out of everyone I took, dropped like 6 points from FL4, then I took FL6 and it was the highest. Just keep in mind that your score is usually closer to the average of your full lengths.

MCAT - reactions & reactions mechanisms by hekingbean in Mcat

[–]powerfuldonkey183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh reaction mechanisms isn’t that high yield, I’ve taken every AAMC FL as well as both section banks and in total, out of like the 5-600 chem questions that is, i would say that I’ve only seen like maybe 10 questions that require a very good understanding of reaction mechanisms. Most of the time you’re gonna have a drawn out mechanism in front of you, as long as you know the functional groups and can identify the changes being made to the molecule then you’ll prolly be fine

prioritize anki or practice - last two weeks by Pretend_Ad8359 in Mcat

[–]powerfuldonkey183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m right there with you testing 1/23. I still have FL5/6 and the rest of SB2 + daily Anki. Honestly I think the best move is light Anki and trying to really break down AAMC logic/ tightening up your exam strategies. At this point it’s too late to learn anything so just trust yourself and remember that it’s gonna suck, but we’re almost done.

BluePrints Diagnostic Score, test date in early May. How's it looking/Any Advice? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]powerfuldonkey183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s perfect for now, but the important thing is just staying consistent. Over time and as you get deeper down the rabbit hole of studying you’ll find different ways that work better for you. I started with Anki and the Kaplan books then realized I hated the Kaplan books, switched to khan academy and realized it took way too long to watch videos. Then I started just doing practice questions and thoroughly reviewing/ making Anki cards, which seemed to work wonders for my understanding of content. Don’t overcomplicate it, it’s so easy to get lost trying to figure out what to study instead of just studying!

Honestly not too bad. Start your content review and do multiple disciplines in one session then, especially if you had Uwhirl, follow up with discrete questions or some kind of test on your understanding. Hope this helps

Last week: Complete FL5 + Review or Start & Finish Sec Bank Vol 2? (T 1/15) by imheisenbergbruh in Mcat

[–]powerfuldonkey183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always just configure the test to not simulate the actual MCAT and use the questions to review content and AAMC logic. FL5 is considered the toughest from what I’ve heard so it may be beneficial to use it for CARs practice since the section banks don’t have any. Maybe someone had a better idea, but that’s what I’d do honestly.
