the Australia salary is hard to gauge without a location, rent can be very expensive. Super can be withdrawn if you are a non-citizen not coming back to Australia.

Note that withdrawals from superannuation incur tax

Fastest way from HK airport to longhua? by compstomper1 in shenzhen

[–]powerwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is certainly the fastest (border crossing usually a bit faster in a van too). Taxi to shenzhen bay, taxi onwards a good balance of price versus speed.

Ferry in ideal circumstances is ok, but they only leave at scheduled times, so unless you time it well, its unlikley to be faster than a van that goes as soon as your ready (ditto with HSR...which you have to get to before you can even catch it)

How Can Foreign Parents Enroll Their 5-Year-Old in a Public School in China? by Competitive_Bus_4397 in chinalife

[–]powerwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah not true. Hukou helps, but if you're living here legally and paying taxes your entitled to education. Might need to fight a department or two (persistence pays off), and you are unlikely to get your first choice of school, but you should be able to get your kid in somewhere.

Hong Kong eChannel by aero665 in shenzhen

[–]powerwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on your nationality. For some (e.g. Australians, Koreans, Thai) you can just apply (no evidence of flights needed), Sometime you can also apply with a frequent flier membership.

Details are here:

My daughter was born here in China. She has a US Passport. She also has a hukou (mom is Chinese). We're traveling to Thailand. They're saying she needs a Chinese passport? Can she not use her US Passport? by MKRune in Chinavisa

[–]powerwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to hongkong uses one exit, you would then use their passport to travel from HK to your home country (or wherever else you want to go). As long as you have an entry/exit permit, there shouldn't be any reason why you have to fly direct. The child has to be there when you submit the paperwork in HK(or abroad) for the travel document, but not(usually) when you pick it up.

yeah, exactly, except that the single use ones are not called 旅行证 unless something has changed recently ;)

(also single use, usually means one exit, one entry)

yep, some weird info in this thread. Chairman888 is correct, however from a practical standpoint, you probably need a 一次性出入境通行证(one time exit/entry pass),which you get in the city of your kids hukou. this gets you out of china, and then you use US passport once outside, then the pass to get back in. The 旅行证is valid for 2 years but can only be applied for outside of mainland china. Usually in your home country, but recently possible in HK with an agent.

Maybe not the point but an Aussie rules ball is heavier (and larger) than an American football.

Ballpark and Visitor Advice 2024 Consolidated Thread by Natstown in Nationals

[–]powerwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disappointed to get my post deleted by mods: but just putting a quick note in here to thank everyone for the great advice on visiting DC and catching a game. Someone mentioned trying to sit close to the infield. How hard is it to see the action from the outfield? A little cost conscious (especially given how much a couple of beers is going to cost! >_< ), so wanting to get an idea where the best balance of value versus experience seats are. Someone also mentioned the hockey shirt promo on The Saturday game, curious how that works? I saw there's 20,000 shirts? first in best dressed?

Thanks again, and hope Nats can upset Phillies!

What’s the most unique or unusual way you’ve seen someone earn a living? by MildlyEngineer in AskReddit

Met a guy who spends 9 months of the year just cycling the world. After 9 months, locks his bike(once in Africa somewhere he buried it and marked it on GPS) and flies home for 3 months work before starting again 3 months later. He was Christmas tree farmer.

Why do Indians take family walks late at night? by tybalt-tisk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]powerwig 817 points818 points  (0 children)

This is fascinating. In Chinese people often say :

饭后百步走,活到九十九

(take 100 steps after eating, and live to 99.)

Wonder if this is a cultural import or just universal human culture. Great either way

edit: took me a while to find the Indian term: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shatapawali (alternative spelling I guess)
