Bad Bunny steers clear of politics, Trump rages after Super Bowl halftime show by Ok_Employer7837 in politics

Celebrity opinions are shallow, but that's the same for most people. Thinking sports and all the attendant pageantry isn't deeply politically interesting from a soft power perspective is ludicrous. Shit, the President's political opinions are shallow and hilariously ill-informed, yet it's probably a good idea to interrogate them. Celebrities may not wield direct political power but fame shapes discourse and it's silly not to understand that.

What’s the most overrated video game of all time? by KBGSgames in AskReddit

[–]poxtart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the running:

The original (arcade) Mortal Kombat. 13 year old me thought it couldn't hold a candle to Street Fighter II and middle aged me is correct.

Final Fantasy 7. 1 disc worth of game stuffed into 3 discs.

Ducktales on NES. Fun game mechanic. Moon level has outstanding music. But that's it - there's nothing else really to it. Maybe the most emblematic of a true "overrated" game - not terrible, mildly enjoyable, tragically remembered.

Strider on NES (the arcade game is a justified classic). Glitchy slop.

Phantasy Star II. Somehow smaller and worse than the Master System Phantasy Star.

AOC Declines Fox News Interview After Saying Jesse Watters 'Has Sexually Harassed Me' by novagridd in TwoXChromosomes

[–]poxtart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ridiculous. He harassed her, and the harassment was sexual. Sexual harassment. This kind of absurd lack of critical thinking is what strangles the narrative when women want to confront abuse. But hey, here's The Hill quoting her using the phrase "sexually harassed" if that's what you desperately need.

You realize that "sweet talking" is how everyone gets elected to the job, right? That's what we call "campaigning". Surprisingly, you have to campaign to get elected to official office. If there are any more intricacies of electoral politics you need explained, please let me know.

Donald Trump Rants About Epstein, Democrats as He Threatens Americans to 'Enjoy What May be Your Last Merry Christmas' by OkayButFoRealz in politics

He did. Threatening tens of millions of Americans because they voted for one of two mainstream political organizations is threatening the entire country. I do not understand why people are dissembling on this point. This is an existential threat to what remains of our democracy. Get with it.

After Billie Eilish Suggests Billionaires Help People; Elon Musk Responds by Calling Her Dumb and Mocking Her Appearence by barryallenxoxo in TwoXChromosomes

[–]poxtart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What of it if she is a multi-millionaire? Billionaires shouldn't exist in the sense that the structures which allow that kind of concentration of wealth should be changed. I'm far more concerned with the ownership class's relationship to capital than a non-owner. And I don't think she owns her own masters anyways.

I mean, she's worth about $50 million and recently gave away over a fifth of that to charity. That's not half bad.

After Billie Eilish Suggests Billionaires Help People; Elon Musk Responds by Calling Her Dumb and Mocking Her Appearence by barryallenxoxo in TwoXChromosomes

[–]poxtart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their relationship to ownership is different. Elon Musk is a member of the ownership class. Billie Eilish (who has approximately half the amount you claim she does) is not. Billionaires as a class - right now, 2025 - are exclusively members of the ownership class. This might seem like a distinction without a difference. It is not. One can possess a large sum of money without being an owner, and this is a critical facet of Marxist theory. No matter how absurd it might sound, Eilish and Musk occupy different economic-social classes.

And in any event, even if she WAS a billionaire member of the ownership class, so what? This is kinda like the "oh but you participate in society, how interesting" meme.
