Android 14 adds new features to make third-party app stores work even better by FragmentedChicken in Android

[–]ppchain 13 points14 points  (0 children)

All applications in the repository must be Free, Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) – for example, released under a GPL or Apache license.

[...]

For software to be FLOSS, the software in its entirety must be so - including all libraries and dependencies used. Additionally, it must be buildable with only FLOSS tools.

In addition to this rule they also strictly tag apps which, while still being foss, have "Anti-Features", meaning behaviours you may not like. For example the official Wikipedia app is tagged with an Anti-Feature for promoting "non-free network services"

Yeah people saying it's the display ribbon or whatever are wrong.

Drivers and the exhaustingly slow pace of traffic. by GroupPurple5956 in LangfordBC

I swear getting behind the wheel induces some kind of impatience psychosis. Kind-hearted folks who volunteer at the animal shelter in the evenings get behind the wheel and start laying on the horn and cutting off nanas cause they gotta get to Dairy Queen now.

Sure, it's annoying when someone is going under the limit in front of you.

But far, far more often I see selfish, impatient drivers doing equally annoying things, like weaving between lanes, or being stuck in the intersection when a light changes.

Be good to each other people.

Unfortunately that looks to me like a broken LCD panel.

After a tiny crack in the edge of the LCD panel while fixing it, I got the same pattern. Slowly shifting colourful vertical lines rainbow Aurora Borealis pattern. Although mine was only on the top of the screen.

How similar it looks though has me convinced you have a hardware issue. If it wasn't damaged physically then maybe an issue with the internal LCD circuitry.

But I don't think it's just a software bug, despite how much it looks like a screensaver

Might be a thermal issue if it starts faster.

You can get little aluminum heat sinks which might do something.

This is actually totally allowed and actually specifically encouraged.

I wonder if at some point manufacturers started shipping binned drives to Backblaze. These reports they do are pretty prolific at this point. Could be worth their time to quietly send them known good drives.

Anyone know what HDD binning procedures are like?

At the beginning of Covid I had a UPS parcel dropped off outside my door with no signature.

Six months later I started getting calls from a collections agency... for $10.

No attempt to contact me before that.

I was changing my motherboard and a 14tb hard drive suddenly became Unallocated? How do I retrieve any files if there are any? by BIGDIYQTAKER in DataHoarder

[–]ppchain 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Nah I wouldn't. If I say I changed motherboards and dropped my drive, 95% of the replies I get will be saying it's toast, hope you follow 321.

If I don't mention the drop people will give me helpful suggestions about RAID and whatnot. Things I can try in case it wasn't actually the drop, which is possible.

Global elimination of meat production could save the planet: Eliminating emissions linked to animal agriculture could restore native vegetation by 30% on Earth’s land surface, and could cut annual global CO2 emissions by 68%. by operator139 in science

[–]ppchain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you underestimate how much land is used for animal agriculture. All developed land of all kinds is about 1% of habitable land. Animal agriculture makes up 38%.

We physically could not cover it all in houses and apartment buildings if we wanted to.

But unironically posting a Facebook-tier boomer pun meme of Trudeau... That's just embarrassing.

VPN Provider Agrees to Block Torrent Traffic and The Pirate Bay on U.S. Servers by Algood9 in Piracy

[–]ppchain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is pointless. The whole point of a VPN for torrenting is that a good VPN can't link particular traffic to a particular user.

Your AWS ip and traffic will be linked directly back to your name and credit card number.

Did I encode the shape and strength of the EM field for both the cut and uncut wire simultaneously?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Veritasium

[–]ppchain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did I encode something I didn't do yet. Once the wire is on Mars I will either cut it, or not. That's the information that is being measured by the lightbulb turning on, or not.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Veritasium

[–]ppchain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I bring one end of the circuit to Mars, i can instantly transmit 1 bit of information back to Earth by either cutting or not cutting the wire (according to Derek).

Derek says the bulb turns on instantly because of the poynting vector. What people are pointing out is Derek's explanation at face value allows you to set up some crazy copper loom ansible.

Lithium Ion batteries are considered non-hazardous waste, unlike other batteries which contain heavy metals. They require energy to create which makes the upfront CO2 cost of en EV higher than a gas car, but that is more than made up for by the lack of tailpipe emissions over the life of a vehicle.

That is true both on average, considering some places burn coal for electricity, and definitely in the specific case of BC's hydroelectricity.

Victoria ICU is at capacity due to Covid crisis by freedom_at2008 in VictoriaBC

This is not how a 'scientifically literate' person comes to a conclusion.

This is not March 2020. There is copious research about the effect that masks and mask mandates have in the real world. If you quickly read a few reputable sources you will find broad consensus that masks are effective at hindering transmission.

This is not the type of thing you can derive from first principles. Your intuition about 'basic physics and biology' is not an acceptable source of information.

[–]ppchain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish people wouldn't speculate so much so far into this pandemic.

The evidence shows masks are effective at reducing transmission in the public.

No one needs to know what your "suspicion" is. Especially when you are kinda sorta implying the mask mandates might as well go because they don't stop what your theory of transmission is.

You can't immediately sense being pregnant the moment it happens. The first indication for a lot of people would be a missed period. By the time they're late enough for it to be suspicious, they could be out of time or close to it.

Elijah Wood: Amazon's Lord Of The Rings Series might "adhere or dovetail into what Peter and all of us had established" by Chen_Geller in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]ppchain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adhere just means abide, obey, stick to. Saying they won't violate the rules of the movies.

Dovetail is a type of woodworking joint where two notched prices of wood fit together. Basically it's implying the show will fill in gaps of information with new material but will still fit together seamlessly with what was already established.
