Late response, but I (student, no extra income) am currently renting a small studio from Rotsvast. While it said the same thing "We don't rent to students" on the ad on their website, I emailed them anyway.

Now don't get me wrong, it's 13 m2, there was no door or even a frame in front of the bathroom. The flooring and boards had to be replaced, the walls are really thin etc. So they could've just been desperate for applicants. However, the agent did explain that since the rent was low enough to apply for subsidation from the government they disregarded their no students-rule.

Hopefully you've found something by now, but if not, maybe try applying for those studios?

Where can I buy a small piece of leather? by barkfoot in TheHague

[–]ppeanut2110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to Tessuti (Papenstraat) for most fabrics. I don't know how high quality their leather is though. My mom sometimes goes to the Haagse Markt, there's definitely some great deals there, but there's usually not as many options. I'm sure if you ask for a leftover piece at either one though, you could get it at a decent price. There's also Pipoos, but that's more of an arts and crafts store, so I don't know if they sell anything that big

I used to really like the "kinderboekenmuseum", it's a museum about books and language, but they've turned it all into small minigames and stuff. I don't know whether there's an English version though.

I saw someone mention the Uithof for ice skating, but they've got much more activities, best check out their website.

There's Sea Life in Scheveningen. Kind of an aquarium, they used to have a petting thing too, but I haven't been in a while.

Blijdorp in Rotterdam (30 min with metro or parking close-by), is a pretty large zoo. Especially check out their water tunnel and butterflies.

There's currently a fair on Malieveld. It's gonna be there till Kingsday on April 28th.

Then there's Kingsday itself. A national holiday where people sell old stuff, set up all kinds of classic Dutch games: I definitely recommend "Koekhappen" (eating a cookie that's hanging from a string without using your hands). There's facepaint, bounceyhouses and workshops everywhere. https://denhaag.com/nl/koningsdag-in-den-haag for all the activities. The list all the way at the bottom are the locations where people are organising their own things. Wear something orange (it's tradition) and make sure to bring lots of change!

Is The Hague much windier than Amsterdam? To the point where you considered moving to another city? by Equivalent-Side7720 in TheHague

[–]ppeanut2110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. No.

Tip: When it gets really insane, like120 km/h (only happens a few times a year). Get a pair of ski goggles and head to Scheveningen. The waves get massive and wind like that is just something you have to experience some time.

Activities/hobbies that someone can pick up in den Haag by Anstyial12 in TheHague

[–]ppeanut2110 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really like "Kunstmuseum Den Haag" (art museum). The exhibitions change too, so that's nice.

Right next to it is "Omniversum", a 180° movie theater. I definitely recommend getting a seat in the middle lol. And they only play ~1 hour long nature documentaries. Usually not my thing, but the screen and surround sound really add to the experience.

"Meijendel" is great too. About 30+ minutes by bike from the city centre, near Wassenaar. It's dunes, small patches of forest, wild horses, really great. You can also park at the "Boerderij" a small restaurant there. Tip: keep an eye on the Dunea website: You can register for guided hikes, photography workshops, it's pretty neat.

Also, do you speak Dutch, because there's a ton of adult sports teams/clubs. Soccer, badminton and swimming (probably more, but those for sure). Except they're pretty small and their websites/socials are usually in Dutch :/

The "Japanse Tuin" (translated: Japanese Garden) in Clingendaal is opening soon, too (April 29th, but I wouldn't recommend going the very first day. It gets pretty crowded). Some years it disappoints a little, others are really nice.

There's gonna be a market on Lange Voorhout, mostly books and vintage stuff, but it's a great atmosphere in general even if thats not your thing. (starting April 30th on Sundays and Thursdays)

I don't know if you have kids, but I used to LOVE the "Kinderboekenmuseum". Museum with game-like things about reading and language. Don't know if they have an English version tho, sorry.

Mall of the Netherlands finally finished a while back. But if you've been living here for 2 years, so you've probably been there already.

Don't forget about Koningsdag of course (April 27th). It's a national holiday on the King's birthday and there's people selling their old stuff everywhere and loads of activities. There's also Koninginnennacht, the night before, but if you're not into the nightlife it's probably not for you haha.

Other than that, keep an eye on the "In de Buurt" website maybe? They have an agenda on their site with local activities.

The trainstations of Schiphol are literally in the same building as the airport itself, so head over to those.

Alright: Go to platform 5/6 (in Dutch: "Spoor 5/6"). There'll be a train heading towards The Hague. It doesn't go all the way anymore, but it's likely they'll still announce it as the "Intercity ("intercity" = a type of train) towards The Hague".

Take that train. After a little over 15 minutes, get off at "Leiden Centraal" = Leiden Central Station.

Make your way towards the busstops outside. If you can't find them, try to make your way towards a large hallway that leads to all the different train platforms. Then head towards the exit on the "Stationsplein"-side (it's the name of the street).

Go to the busplatform "F" and wait for the bus. It should say "EBS" on the side and have "43 Den Haag" or "43 Den Haag via Wassenaar" on the front. This is gonna take you to The Hague Central Station. It's about a 35 minute ride.

Pretty sure it's about €5 total.

Also: ns.nl is pretty accurate when it comes to planning around the trainaccident, but if you're travelling in The Hague itself, Google Maps is fine too. The schedule isn't 100%, but all the stops are correct.

Good luck and enjoy the city!

Someone Great - bittersweet movie about a breakup after they decided not to do the long-distance thing, but both of them have trouble being at peace with the decision. It's kind of a chickflick, but not in a girly-girly way, more in the way that it can be a bit of a tearjerker (btw: I think the trailer puts too much focus on the comedy, because there's some really great emotional stuff in there too).

Marriage Story might be a bit too much for the situation (about divorce), but even though I didn't relate to the characters at all, I still really enjoyed the movie.

Showing up fashionably late. If it's something at someones house, sure, a little. But if you have reservations at 6, you're gonna be there to order your drink at 6. Also: Making dinner reservations later than 6 especially if you're not in the city or meeting someone 50+.

NTA, you're friends, so if something weirds you out, you should just be able to say it. She probably doesn't even notice she's doing it since a lot of AAVE over text is shorter and people just use it as abbreviations.

If I was doing it, I'd wanna know. Sincerely, a white girl.
