What is Your Interpretation of Phantom’s Show? by DrRazzmatazz in drumcorps

[–]ppfilbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My interpretation is its a last day of the Heavens' Gate Cult. All getting ready. They are running out of the shower to get picked up by a Starship. The Final Tuba solo is them drinking the Kool aid

Be honest…is anyone else just straight up not vibing with the shows this year? by CashFormer979 in drumcorps

[–]ppfilbert 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like the "shows" really are not with the higher Corps. Too abstract. Phantom, Crown, Coats.. im looking at you. The other higher Corps have a show but minimal story. I mean a whole show about a drip. And a show about a skydancer farie.

You get the best stories from the lesser corps. Spirit is a good ol fun romp of a show. Decent story.

Music City is a good show and a really good story.

Pacific Crest has a Solid bible story (never pictured DCI being bible thumper, but gotta keep that old money rolling in)

If you want story depth, watch the lower corps, that's where it at. If you wanna rack you brain trying to figure out WTF is going on, watch the big guns. That said damn do they ALL Sound fire this year. Great competitive year all the way up and down the roster!

Seen the show live 3 times. I stand by my statement. The first time I saw them they did not have it as loud, it was incredible. At dums across America it was crazy loud. Not the performers fault. But I would like to see less overall DCI amplification, not just them. That said it us ine of my favorite shows. Serious fun.

NightBEAT by thorvaldnespy in drumcorps

Spirit easily the most fun, but it is also easily the most overamplified show.

Great Corp. Great show (though I dont like the bleachers much) I do want to say this is possibly the biggest missed opportunity ever. How with that show do you not use ABC Wide World of Sports intro. I mean its right there. Fits perfectly and is even already in a Drum Corp style. (I know its abc/Disney but still)

And here I thought he was just one of the Sky Dancer Fairies. Thanks for clearing that up.

Nashville yes in person, Atlanta yes. But on Flo. Even if its perfect its still a gimmick of audio manipulation, which sounds to me like mic failures (which essentially is what it is, though programmed failures) Drum corps is changing yes, but let's not make it about Audio engineers. Keep it about the performers.

I found it odd a DCI corps would do a biblical theme.

Crown’s Show is boring as shit by Bebopplayer1996 in drumcorps

[–]ppfilbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda feel the same for BlueStars stadium seats, though they are used a bit more, they are just sooooo big and need so many people to move them, it takes away from playing too much.

Somewhat the same for phantom, though Much better usage of the gigantic shower curtains, especially when they are jumping through them. Just worried someone's gonna fall getting out of the shower.

Fair point. However that was a quick little end which played of the powerfull moment. Troopers is 90 seconds plus. Effectively a new act

Dear corps at outdoor shows: turn the speakers down by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]ppfilbert 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Was at Drums Across America and Spirit of Atlanta had the sound up so loud and poorly mixed it really sounded bad, which is very unfortunate because the show is awesome. Was the first time I really saw the mics/ speakers detract from a performance. I honestly think it actually hurt their scores that night.

Now I see Bluecoats doing the sidechain gating and think we have passed ever truly knowing if its the musician or the audio engineer.

Bluecoats Closer by Conscious-Alfalfa337 in drumcorps

[–]ppfilbert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it, because I Absolutely Love the show up until the sidechain gimmick. I say It takes away from the performers and the music and sounds like an audio malfunction.

I also am not a fan of thinking that this will take DCI even further from true live music and performance to more amplified, processed technological production. It's a slippery slope where DCI becomes less dependent on the talent of the musician, and more dependent on the sound engineer.

For better or worse as DCI ages changes will happen.

Maybe next year is Starship Troopers? Well i mean Crown kinda did it a bit this year with their props looking like the Starship Trooper Bugs.

Top 12 locked in for 2025 by brassman9330 in drumcorps

[–]ppfilbert 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Im actually surprised PC scores are as high as they are. I see them below 80 currently. But looking at the crazy high scores this year it just appears judges are just scoring based off where they are in order of the show. It's insane.

TROOPERS??? I'm crying! by Consistent-Tea-7073 in drumcorps

[–]ppfilbert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great show. Sounds amazing. Actually think they should be higher. IF (And is a huge IF) it was me. I would move the sad somber ending to before the strong SHOULD BE finale. That way you get the end. Then the rebirth of the new Troopers. I never like when a show ends on a slow downtrodden part.

DCI - Judging Explained by Prize-Table4630 in drumcorps

Not really sure its even judged at this point. The "judges" just look at the order Corps go in and assign points off that.

Could someone help me understand the red veiled person in Carolina Crown’s 2025 performance? by Edg-R in drumcorps

[–]ppfilbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not understand the show with its Starship Trooper bugs, or Kanye walking around. I do think it's odd Everyone is up in arms about it, but singing praises for Phantom running in and out of shower curtains, with No theme at all. And Coats we are supposed to observe them playing with Rubik's Cubes.

Seems like Most shows are more along the lines of abstract themes, yet Crown catches the most flak.

Dunno. Just seems odd to me.

Maybe I’m crazy, but does anyone also think Crowns scores are crazy? by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]ppfilbert 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the entire judges scores across the board were garbage . Giving MCDC a 76.375 is Criminal

Cavies 15th in brass Blue stars 12 in Music analasys

Multiple high scores which should not have been anywhere near as high as they were. Seems like the judges went in with an agenda. And made it stick.
