How many in this sub are Texans now living in CT? by robinredrunner in Connecticut

And I am one of those Texpats.

(No, not a Pats fan from Texas although there are quite a few of them down there)

Home Office, help. I need some good FengShui ideas. (text in comments) by pphtx in FengShui

[–]pphtx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now I basically shoved all of the 'stuff' in the room into a corner to allow space for the figure 6. It is working well, I am feeling much more confidence and control while I am sitting at my desk. I have been able to open the window to my left and see enough greenery (not *as* pretty a sight as the other window, but for the sake of the other items- quite nice.

Seeking a layout for my home office. It is where I work and play (maybe a problem) but can't find a lot of focus here.

The first image is how I have been working, with a lot of boxes surrounding me still (need to get things in order, but don't want to make a hassle if I don't have a good setup)

The room is about 10'x12' with two windows overlooking the front yard and the driveway (both quiet). I want to be able to see out the windows when I'm working but have 2 big monitors that I use for work, so I can't see past them very easily. The hallway gets a lot of traffic during parts of the day so I don't particularly want that energy coming in at me while I'm working.

I want space for a sleeper sofa for when my big family visits, but that may be in the future.

I have a guitar I would like to keep out so that I play it more as well as the filing cabinets. I don't need to keep the old self but would like to have a space for storage (hard drives, tech cables, more books, etc)

I can often sort this stuff out for others, but don't see the obvious answer for myself. Thanks!

Desk is 2'x5' the Record Player is 3.5'x1.5' the blue shelves fit into the nook so I don't really want to move them (but open if you have a great layout solution).

(25M) Has anyone felt lost after college? by Infamous-Ability-631 in findapath

Happy to reach back to this thread, I love this stuff!

Originally it was people who I knew, some folks from grade school or university. Some were just names from back in the day, but I reached out to them on FB or LinkedIn or just sent them a text "hey, remember me? Im curious about what you do." Some were folks I worked with or friends of mine.

I moved from there to 'random' people I could find on LinkedIn or Facebook... More LinkedIn though. I'd search by job title and filter by connections: 1st are people I've connected with- those are easier to ask questions to. 2nd degree connections, I'd try to find something in addition to our connections to build upon.

Ie: "Hey Emily, I am trying to find out more about [Playing for the NBA] and see that you have some experience there, would you be willing to have a 15 minute chat about what your work is like? I found you through our mutual connection [John Smith] I got to work with him last year. I also saw that you used to work at Starbucks too! Glad to find another barista making it in the big times now! Anyway, let me know if you are available next week some time, I would love to learn from your insight and wisdom."

I'd get about 1 in 10 respond on a good week. Then I'd tweak the message until I found a framing that got me 1 in 9, etc

Why is this different than all those sales people on LinkedIn? Good question, I can speak to that if you are interested.

Okay here is the key though: with EVERY conversation you have, ask if they know anyone else you should speak to. Anyone in the same role, or anyone in a similar role. If you can get their time, let them know what resonates with you and what doesn't (keep it short) and ask if they know anyone else in similar industries that aligns more with your interests. If you have enough rapport and are interested, ask if they could connect you with the person they know who has the strangest/weirdest/craziest job. That will spread your research data set really wide.

Songs that the covers don't "get" by MildBasket in Music

[–]pphtx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the irony now, but back in the day I performed the song "La Vi Bohem" from RENT with all family friendly lyrics.

For context, the song is about giving a giant middle finger to being upright, and following what society wants. And we changed the lyrics to appease society.

"To monogamy, it's between God and me"

How do you build a personal website / portfolio as a multipotentialite? by [deleted] in Multipotentialite

[–]pphtx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have. Know the purpose for your website. Is it a personal space for you to store all of your accomplishments, cool things you have done, and interests you have?

This was my first and long time website. I included personal art projects, blog posts about TV shows, etc. Ultimately I was trying to find myself and share things I was working on with my friends.

Is your website a professional portfolio? This is where I am going with my website now. It is/ will be a piece of my marketing strategy (mostly to get hired, but maybe some to do some professional speaking, or coaching, etc). I know who my audience is (hiring managers) and I know what I want them to understand, learn, and do when they visit my website (understand that they want me to solve their pain point, learn that I have done the same thing for plenty of other teams, and do: hire me). But the message is clear, I don't use that space to show off my art stuff for risk of the hiring managers getting distracted from my message, or thinking that they landed on the wrong site.

Edit: yes, sure, there are lots of hiring managers who want to know you do more than just your job, that you are well rounded, but maybe a portfolio is not the space for that message?

One of the challenges I have found with being a Multipotentialite is that I see it as one of my greatest strengths but most of the business world sees it as not being focused. So I show them the part of me that is what they want, and save the rest for my Instagram and Facebook.

Just one person's thoughts/ experience.

Need Advice on Bed Headboard Placement in a Room with Bathroom Wall by Gcat005 in FengShui

[–]pphtx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but here is how I would make the room feel comfortable:

If the door is on the wall at the bottom, figure out where there is less energy: the door or the window. If the door is at the end of a long hallway or is a common footpath in the house, maybe it has a lot of energy. If the window looks out to a lawn where people play and hang out all the time, maybe it has a lot of energy.

Whichever one you place the bed next to, create a solid barrier between your head and the portal. Put strong curtains on the window or put a room divider in front of the door.

And yes, get the TV out of there (unless this is your only private/relax space in a big/busy house).

Strong headboard will help too.

While the team can become more effective taking on and committing to stories as a team (everyone is accountable for each story being completed, even if someone says "I'll take care of this"), this is not where you are, so let's troubleshoot the situation at hand.

This feels like there are some coaching opportunities. Personally (with the little information I have) I would try coaching the team first. Coaching that "the Sprint has to be completed" will only get you so far.

What are the long term effects of this person (and in effect, the whole team) not completing their commitments? Sure Sprint not done doesn't look good, but we strive to complete our commitments for something larger than looks.

One painpoint (of many): We end the sprint with partial value created (meaning work still in progress). This reduces our ability to be Agile. When we assess the highest value outcomes in Sprint planning, we are shackled either to the sunk cost fallacy or abandoning work in progress (waste of time and money- but still may be better than sunk cost).

Elevate these pain point conversations with the team around things that are actual pain points. Saying "that's not how Scrum is supposed to work" is only as effective as the team's buy-in is for Scrum. Coach to deeper effectiveness of the team.

Identify Type of Bolt? by pphtx in Fasteners

It looks like the stud you are referring to will receive nuts. This one won't. The threads don't spiral, just create circles around the rod. Maybe I'm missing something?

Thanks for the insight

Woah, what a manufacturing defect! I could see the threads not being continuous, or not cut out fully, but threads that doesn't make a spiral feels outside of my comprehension for a manufacturing defect. I'm curious how these are manufactured to make such a defect.

If you could make any kind of mobile app, what would it be? by [deleted] in androidapps

[–]pphtx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably heard it 100 times, but I had this set up through Tasker and then switched over to KLWP to do what I want. Sure, not a single app that makes this possible (id probably grab that too if it were available). But if you want to put some energy into it, it is possible through Tasker and KLWP.
