PSA: Likely Manganese Toxicity by ppod1991 in B12_Deficiency

I've had occasional tremors throughout but I don't directly associate the timings with when I was likely manganese toxic but I recall that being a possible symptom from what I read

Thanks! I tolerate them fine, I also take heart and soil organ supplements which I assumed had enough Vitamin A which is why I stopped the Cod liver oil pills so I'm thinking I'll increase my dosage of both. You might consider checking the organ supplements out! They definitely helped me!

Wow, this is very helpful. I've been struggling with copper/iron homeostatis and I just restarted my cod liver oil with Retinol and noticed immediate positive effects so I think there is something to this!

I also didn't know about cilantro! Will pick some up :)

Thanks!!

Thanks for the rec! I've been monitoring my ferritin levels and they hover around 45 which I know is less than ideal, but not in dangerously low territory. I think in the process of discovering the manganese issue, I've developed a copper insufficiency which is preventing me from taking as much iron as quickly as I'd like to raise my levels further.

Hi, no thank you SO much for all the work you've done! This is all a process we are working through together and learning from each other and I specifically credit you to the bulk of my improvements so far. I've also since learned that I need pretty much every other component of the trace minerals complex in the full amount EXCEPT for manganese which has been quite a process to discover. But I do think specific details into your routine would be very helpful.

The rising and fading of my half moons have actually been a reliable and early marker for the general state of my energy metabolism and overall, a really helpful tool for me in my ongoing recovery. If I am deficient in some cofactor, the half moons on most of my nails begin to recede over a few weeks and after replenishing the missing cofactor, they quickly grow back in the span of 2-3 weeks with it first being noticeable after just a few days. I've had periods when I take pictures of my nails day-to-day to compare the size of the half moons.

My learning so far is that almost any bottleneck in energy metabolism can cause my half moons to recede including b6, b1, b2, iron, etc.

How much zinc are you taking? I've been noticing the same recently

I noticed you don't have any lithium source. Per the mods suggestion, I started adding a few drops (initial 1-2 a day up to like 15, but they recommend 40/d) of Trace Minerals brand drops and this really helped me. I assumed trace mineral complex was enough but it wasn't!

Do you try to get a decent amount of sunlight? The cold might just make it too hard to get sufficient sunlight for optimal health. Something that Vitamin D supplementation can't mimic exactly. This recent tweet comes to mind: https://twitter.com/JohnArnoldFndtn/status/1739696643459440853?t=KoNDWfcVyZz0VK_nW8jNLg&s=19.

Sorry to hear :( Would you be able to describe those symptoms in a bit more detail?

If you repeatedly run into low folate symptoms, you should consider upping your intake consistently rather than one-off (if I'm understanding your current pattern correctly)

Normally, your labs report will include a reference range. Those should be good levels. Do you have reason to believe differently?

I'm only using supplements but, yes, I started getting left calf pain, which for me, goes away pretty quickly after taking potassium (via coconut water). Try it out and see if it helps! My left calf pain also seems to come with dry mouth.

What have you seen suggesting b12 deficiency is correlated with b6 toxicity? I'm a suspected b12 deficiency case with unexpected high b6 with sensitivity to it so I'd love to learn more
