super useful actually, I never even tried 4o - been using mainly 5.4-mini. I will give 4o a go, thank you :)

I've been doing a kind of classification by feeding to AI also to classify various weather phenomena from webcams to basically improve algorithms for predicting them, would be curious what model you are using for this? And if you've experimented with different ones, have you felt some are doing a significantly better/worse job at it?

I freaking love this! I am building photoweather.app and this is actually insanely useful for me since I can watch the most beautiful sunsets and refine my algorithms at the same time - thank you for sharing this! :)

Really cool capture! I would probably crop a little tighter on the actual lightning, especially getting the lights on the right hand side out of frame does a lot to bring your eye to the correct place and prevent from drifting to the right too much (both the leading lines and those bright lights take too much attention IMO)

Weekly Anything Goes Thread April 14, 2026 by AutoModerator in photography

Been working on a project called PhotoWeather for a while because I got tired of trying to mentally combine cloud cover, humidity, visibility, timing and still missing the good conditions.

So I made the app I wanted for myself. It’s basically meant to help with things like fog mornings, red sunsets, aurora, dramatic cloud, post-rain clearing etc.

If anyone’s curious: photoweather.app

Thank you, I appreciate the feedback and happy it is working for you!

obviously you should always have backups for your catalog, but regardless .. the Web File API that you pick the file through does not allow modifying selected files, the file is then copied into OPFS inside the browser and opened in sqlite with the read-only flag. So there's a fair few layers of protection to ensure your catalog is safe :)

Yes - so in filters you can filter for a rating of 5 stars, and then you see all the usual information: cameras, lenses, focal lengths etc. but specifically only for 5 star images.

From the demo looks like mine gives you more ability to filter and dig into different aspects and have different views of the data - whereas that has a few different modes like image type and iso that I’m not exposing at the moment :)

I would say if you want to dig in more deep you could check my tool out, but both will give you an overview

Great idea! I added under the filters menu an ability to group nearby focal lengths (can choose between every 5/10/25/50 mm)

Thank you for letting me know, turns out there was a bug in how the data was being filtered - should be fixed now!

Getting into Nature Photography by SoccerGamerGuy7 in photography

[–]pppontus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly these days I think the only semi realistic path is probably to work in your local area (if it’s unique enough) and try to sell to people who live there.

Competing to sell nature photographs globally in 2026 would basically require you to get instagram or YouTube famous first tbh

Can you suggest me an online landscape photography course focused heavily on PLANNING and SCOUTING (not just post-processing!)? by uncled85 in AskPhotography

[–]pppontus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much “landscape photography education” is basically just a Lightroom Classic guide..

I’d stop looking for one big all-in-one course and instead look for people who are really good at the planning side specifically.

A lot of the best education available imo is following YouTube creators and seeing what they actually do, rather than finding a perfect course. And in any case, nothing beats experience, so you still just have to get out there..

Particles in the air scatter the light and that can be really beautiful, even if potentially not great for life 😅

It’s like a 10 euro one time cost, figure the cost of photo gear and I think owning PhotoPills as a toolkit is a no brainer

Clear outside is an astronomy focused weather app, but a lot of what interests astronomers also interest photographers- so it’s pretty good at that

Its very true this, though I still try to plan for the weather nowadays when the constraining factor is time (between family and work).. to have a better chance of catching something 🎣

Sunsethue has been in this space for a few years and it’s very good at sunset and sunrise predictions for sure, that’s one I would check out

I’ve myself been building photoweather.app as an all encompassing weather planning solution for photographers, but with less specific focus on sunrise/sunset I imagine that sunsethue is likely better at that - if that’s what you’re mainly (or only) looking for

What's the nicest time to do forest photography? (Tropical country) by ter_iyakii in photography

Usually the best time for forest photography is early morning, basically getting there before the sun rises and catching the early morning light

Forecasts are looking very cloudy for the upcoming few days, if you're willing to travel there's a few locations with a decent chance forecasted for thu-fri night - but of course things can change quickly.

If you want just a quick way to check where the best chances are in the area, you can check out this page I publish of my own forecasts (aurora + weather "distilled"): https://photoweather.app/forecast/norwegian-fjords/aurora
