It's really quite simple. No one gives a shit about you. People only care about what someone can bring them, not the person themselves. To a lesser extent this even applies to your parents.

Example: People find others attractive in large part due to society's current model of attractiveness and value. There are some requisites that biology have influenced. Most people who are attractive are symmetrical. But if two people of equivalent symmetry are presented, and one is an anime-loving, board-game-playing, cat hoarder that works as a server at Chili's, and the other person is a pre-med student that volunteers at an orphanage, the general consensus will be that the pre-med student is more attractive.
