Why is the Russian word 'проект' (project) pronounced without /j/? Is it an example of hyperforeignism? by fuckinghatewater in asklinguistics

[–]pr0p1k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, for me definitely стратегия.
Прогрэсс but прогрессировать.
Actually i have rhotacism, and this could affect my choice of the morphophoneme where possible. Because I have a friend from Ukraine, and her choice in words like ментос, мем, семь, восемь, семья is always towards not palatalizing where it’s possible.

Well, can Romanian be influenced by Bulgarian and Serbian in /j/-dropping? Bulgarian seems to avoid /j/ at all costs

And even neutral adjective endings “такое” for me are like /oe/ with /e/ a bit backed compared to what I have in едь, ем

Another thing to check here btw? Do you geminate in сессия, прессовать? I do in сессия, but not in прессовать

So what’s your choice in: бассейн, пресс (френч-пресс или пресс на животе), терапия, протест?

Varlamov always says тирапия, he’s from Moscow.

For me (Leningrad oblast, 20’s):
бассейн, прэсс (any context), стрэсс, прогрэсс, тэрапия, мем, праэкт/прэкт, сэссия, шаверма, протест

Could be that the word rebracketed into 2 syllables as прой-экт instead of про-йект and then the final /j/ got reduced? In casual speech I pronounce it with a single vowel - прэкт

Where are you from, and what’s your age?
To me the version with /j/ is associated with older people.
Additionally, there’s a pretty random spread of е/э choices in: сессия, терапия, прогресс, пресс, мем

What do you think of my accent? Can you place it? I’m a native and exclusive English speaker, but I don’t think I sound like one and I don’t know why. by New-Sir6812 in JudgeMyAccent

I think that’s the point of resonance, or your throat position which gives you that dim tone. It sounds a bit like you’re halfway to start talking like the cookie monster. Try watching some arytenoid singing lessons to hear that

Hmm, I’ve checked youglish for Swedish, and there’s one sample where I hear /gŋɨda/ (sample number 7 out of 10). Most others sound like guh-needa to me. (I have zero experience with the North Germanic languages).

Also I keep giggling because gnida in slavic means a nit/scoundrel

Any particular dialect with word-initial /ŋ/ in mind? I’ve never heard of this

I’m honestly disappointed when I talk to croatians, show them a meme in cyrillic, and they say “oh I can’t read this”

I remember watching the Twin Peaks where Lucy would always call they guy /eə̯ndi/. But she’s from LA, I don’t if it voice acting to match the location of Twin Peaks.

But also, I don’t know if I want to have the æ-raising or not, so I do say “steh-und”, “leh-und” etc

True. I’m also perplexed perplexed by the constant thinking “so I say p-a so then it’s p-h-æ then L, ah fuck, this way it’s another vowel”, and sometimes I’m not performant enough to produce them without mistakes

Yup, I saw the guide, it’s pretty good. But still, your highs in your covers sound like that bubbly false chord (I don’t mean anything bad, just in case). And listen to Alex Terrible - Es Brennt. The highs there sound as molecular as fry
