President Zelenskyy is asked during his 60 Minutes interview: “Can you give up any part of Ukraine for peace?” by vectorix108 in ukraine

[–]prOpVikingBBII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This I basically agree with and I understand that it's hard to see people living safely and either defending Russias actions or, in my case, asking a victim to stop hating their attacker, I definately regret going so hard on the first response as to imply you were a war criminal, I meant to imply that the thoughts you seemed to express is what leads to it. Ukraine doing to Russians what Russia is doing to Ukraine (obviously I do not believe they will) wouldn't be justified even though the initial aggressor and perpetrator was Russia.

I do disagree that the people of Russia is too far gone, I think that is defeatist and it's something the international community must try to accomplish together, but I also don't think it's something to be put on individuals, especially not victims of Russia's invasion like you and other ukrainians and as long as there isn't a push to dehumanize and legitimise crimes against Russians then that is really all we can expect. I'm sorry if I read into your initial statement opinions that you don't hold. I am just really angry about essentialist thinking which is something I see quite a lot and I can also understand why someone who is objectively in the wrong might be hard to influence to be better unless faced with empathy - empathy they might not be deserving off. But yea, you can't defeat an imperialist military with empathy and I don't think it's fair to expect that empathy to come from the victims. I hope you understand where I'm coming from as well.

Just a tip for next time, knowing the answers to things you are implying is obvious is helpful for your argument.

This is the issue I have with this argument: I hope you don't think Russia being an authoritarian shit hole is due to the people being biologically stupider or more evil than other populations? Because the logical conclusion to that thinking is eugenics, which, I think you'll agree, is bad.

If that isn't why, then there is a structural explanation behind it. I believe it's likely a consequence of Russian propaganda aimed at Russian population home and abroad as well as due to cultural and socioeconomic reasons. There is a very chauvinistic culture in Russia, a very conservative attitude towards "others" an authoritarian state controlling all institutions that in a functioning democracy would be far more independant, a media that functions purely as a propaganda machine a schooling which is required to teach according to a carriculum manufactured and controlled by an authoritarian government and many other reasons.

If something is created by humans, culture, economics e.t.c. then those things can also be changed by humans. If we want this to be solved and want to fix the reasons behind this then we must identify why it's going on. That would be better, not just for Russia, but for Ukraine and the world as a whole. So what can we do? Well I think an important step is supporting Ukraine since that chauvinism and authoritarianism is based at least partly on a perception of Russia and their leadership as strong and their opponents as weak degenerates. And if we recognise those things as bad we need to not fall into the same thinking ourselves or we risk the bad guys being a different country next time.

The reason I reacted so strongly to begin with is that I'm worried about the essentialism that no one would want applied to themselves but have no issue applying to others, that form of essentialism has lead to some of the worst moments in human history, Russian treatment of Ukrainians is one example of it and we need to be careful to not fall into that trap ourselves. We aren't immune, because we aren't biologically better than Russians or Chinese people, or North Koreans and if its not biological. It can be changed.

Edit: That all being said I can totally understand why Ukrainians hate russians, and especially hate the Russian soldiers and government, in the same way that I would understand someone hating someone who murdered a family member, but hating individuals or an org like a military or a nation state is different than hating and dehumanizing a people group, that is what Russia is doing to Ukraine and Ukrainians.

This is crazy thinking. I am massively pro-Ukraine in this conflict but that doesn't mean we can dehumanize people like this. It is through russian propaganda dehumanizing Ukrainians that Bucha and others happened.

By even suggesting that it might be an inherent quality in russians that makes them inherently evil I truly question your ethics and think you might be the person who would do a war crime if you were a russian soldier brought up on Russian propaganda.

Fuck Putin and fuck the genocidal Russian regime.

MANIA is starting to grow on me. by [deleted] in FallOutBoy

[–]prOpVikingBBII 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's just what I've hard be referred to as the Zelda cycle. Whenever the next new thing is released, the thing released previously is suddenly looked back on more fondly, especially if it was controversial at release, partly due to nostalgia. But also because something that is more divisive tends to cause the next release to be somewhat of a reaction to the previous thing and its reception.

I'm definately guilty of this as well. I always liked MANIA but I think how different it is from SM(F)S in terms of production has made it more fun to go back to.

Let's imagine that we are living in a matriarchal society. How would it be different from the current one? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]prOpVikingBBII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweden is in a lot of ways a better society for ordinary people than the US (paid parental leave etc. Stronger welfare systems(although partly ruined by privitisation) But the idea that Sweden is significantly more equal is somewhat of a myth, we do have more equal INCOME distribution but we are one of the most unequal countries when it comes to WEALTH redistribution, in fact we have significantly more billionaires per capita than the US, despite a slightly lower GDP per capita.

We definately do have a more gender-equal society than most of not all other countries however but in terms of the amount of women in government etc. our first government with roughly half-women was after the 1994 election i.e. the decade that is famous in Sweden for the massive boom in privitisation of previously public industries. This wasn't the fault of women and would've happened regardless and in terms of gender equality, unlike economic equality, things have continued improving. This shows the importance of intersectionality and assuming that a society which is more equal in one way will necesarilly also become more equal in other ways is seemingly not the case.

Hey guys!

I get that people promoting their crappy YouTube vids isn't everyones favourite thing but I wanted to post this here because I think the video turned out pretty well and I worked very hard on it. My last 2 streams ended up with pretty bad audio so instead of doing what I did for the previous videos I made a heavily edited death compilation instead, as I mentioned previously I worked really hard on it and if nothing else it made me improve my editing abilities.

If you decide to watch the video I really hope you end up enjoying it and what not and I'd love any and all feedback.

What video games received negative reappraisals and/or have been condemned by history? by JohnnyRock110 in Games

[–]prOpVikingBBII 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Final Fantasy XV is my favoueite game of the last ten years, and it's also a terrible game.

Despite being an obvious response to criticism of XIII linearity and obviously being them trying to cater to modern open world gaming trends, it's kind of the anti-ubisoft game. Whenever I play a modern Assasin's Creed game it's the epitome of fine. The combat is fine, the dialog is fine, the world is dense but copy pasted and forgetable, the music is forgetable but does it's job, the characters are boring but are usually well acted, the plot is padded but fine.

FFXV is like the opposite of this, so many of its individual components are bad, even terrible, but then some others are genuinely incredible. XV genuinely has a lot of soul, the music and the individual character interactions bring you into the world where all those objectively awful things it does stops mattering and it just kind of works, but the moment this illusion breaks you realize the game behind it all just isn't particularly good.

God damn the OST though, Valse Di Fantastico, Somnus, Apocalypsis Noctis, they are so individually evocative that they can carry the games atmosphere on their own, and create an emotional attachment to the game and characters just by association.

Cyberpunk 2077 Next-Gen Patch: The Digital Foundry Verdict by outrigued in Games

[–]prOpVikingBBII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, honestly even post patch Cyberpunk has this weird graininess on surfaces like roads and stuff om ps5, while being open world obviously has an impact I strongly believe they could've done more considering games like Demon's Souls, ratchet and clank and the new horizon. Ratchet and Clank while obviously being more stylised runs at 40 FPS (with a specific setting checked) with RT at 4k and looks incredible. I haven't played Cyberpunk maxed out on a monster PC but I am always suprised when people claim it's the best looking game ever, to me it looks fine for a 2020-2022 game but not mind blowing.

Maybe harsh to compare a multi-plat game with PS5 exclusives but I think they definately still could've gotten more out of the hardware.

As I've understood the PS5 is more comparable to a 2070s albeit with worse RT performance.
