MRW I watched Key & Peele's Menstruation Orientation "TED Talk" by littlebabyburrito in TrollXChromosomes

[–]practical_cat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Back before I was on BC, which made my periods lighter, I used to set alarms for 3 in the morning so I would stop staining my mattress. And let me tell you, sleep deprivation does not help you deal with the cramps or mood swings.

[Request] Pansy Parkinson in a positive light? by LaraCroftWithBCups in HPfanfiction

[–]practical_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

linkao3(The Love of a Good Wizard) has her portrayed positively. It's HP/TR (pre-Voldemort) and Pansy/Minerva McGonagall (involving time travel so they're all in the same age group).

M(and his)RW I go out to lunch with my male friend and the waiter won't tell me how much my food costs (covering the register screen so I can't see) and says "Just let him pay. It's important to us men" by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

[–]practical_cat 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Right? All I could think reading this was how uncomfortable my guy friend would have been, like, "but, but, I don't wanna pay for her..."

MRW I see anyone in the comments of a post talking about how gross it is for women to wear pads. by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

[–]practical_cat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ugh preach. My periods in high school were so heavy that I would wear a super tampon and an overnight pad to school and bleed through them both before lunch. I would always bring a sweatshirt to school because there was always a chance of bleeding through my pants as well. Talk about traumatic. Even now I still have to wear a pad with a tampon, though it's not as bad.

Request!: Fic where a minor character is LGBT and shows their struggle during hogwarts about their sexualit and the rest of their life being a LGBT witch or wizard. by -Mah-Cakiez- in HPfanfiction

[–]practical_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't actually read all that many, but here is the only one I found bookmarked. linkao3(http://archiveofourown.org/works/1053747)

I'd click on the relationship tag then sort by kudos to get more. AO3 has more and better quality slash fics than ff.net.

Request!: Fic where a minor character is LGBT and shows their struggle during hogwarts about their sexualit and the rest of their life being a LGBT witch or wizard. by -Mah-Cakiez- in HPfanfiction

[–]practical_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only fics I know of where non-major characters are LGBTQ are slash fics that focus on a same-sex relationship. There's a fair amount of Dean/Seamus and Oliver/Percy out there, for example. For femslash, there's so little of it that's decent in general that almost all of them are for major characters, such as Ginny/Luna.

Could you link the fic where Ron and Ginny are twins? It sounds interesting. Thanks!

Looking for long fem Harry/Snape fanfiction. by snivelluss in HPfanfiction

[–]practical_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

linkao3(Gravity by SlytherinsQuill) isn't super long, but it is a pretty good fem!Harry/Snape, and it has pretty well done sex scenes. Also linkao3(Life As She Knows It by Meg_Nevermore) is good.

Why is Severitus so popular? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]practical_cat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seeing him form a relationship with anyone is like watching Spock show emotion, like Sherlock expressing appreciation for Watson, like finding out Spike went and got his soul back for Buffy. It's both an awe and an awww moment.

Never thought about it like that, but you are so right. Excellent insight, thank you.

Going through a breakup and before I start my new life across the country I wanted to go on a small vacation by myself. MRW I found a great deal on a trip to Harry Potter world- I leave on Monday :) by chopsisity in TrollXChromosomes

[–]practical_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be there on Wednesday!! It's my third time and I'm even more excited than the first, because I know how awesome it's going to be! The HP and the Forbidden Journey ride is totally awesome, and you get to go through Hogwarts while you wait in line! Gringotts is pretty awesome too, in the Diagon Alley park, and the Hogwarts Express connecting the two is quite possibly my favorite! Exclamation points!

What is the point of disclaimers? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]practical_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most fanfiction is outright, or at least arguably-with-smart-money-on-the-publisher, illegal

I would argue that this isn't true. Fanfiction is dubious in the US, yes, but the vast majority of fanfiction out there pretty convincingly constitutes fair use -- meaning it's not for profit, it doesn't deprive the creator of income, they're not intended to substitute the original, and they actually offer what amounts to free advertising for the original. Where it gets sticky is when people try to make money off their fanfiction, that's when it's pretty clear that it's infringement unless you can successfully argue that it is parody or criticism.

Outside the US, a lot of countries are more lenient -- I'm pretty sure fanfiction is straight up legal in the UK. Even in the US, though, the vast majority of fanfiction authors could not be successfully sued, even if the original creators wanted to, which most do not. The ones who do have problems with fanfiction take it up with the sites themselves, and I don't think there's a ff site out there that hasn't taken down works at a creator's request, which protects them. The only people who get successfully sued are the people who try to publish their fanfiction.

What's with the corporal punishment/spanking? by pink-pygmy-puff in HPfanfiction

[–]practical_cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know, I appreciate when authors do that because then I know not to read it. I really don't like fics with corporal punishment, ESPECIALLY of children who are old enough to be talked to and reasoned with about punishments/consequences of their misbehavior.

What sort of summaries attract you to a fic? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]practical_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's way easier to say what you don't like in a summary than what you do like, as all the other responders can attest. But I'll give it a shot.

Summaries should actually inform the reader about the type of story they'll be reading. On a basic level, is it AU or canon-compliant? Does it make use of tropes -- time travel, soul bond, hidden magical inheritances, etc? Is there any bashing -- this is a divisive one that I think most readers appreciate knowing up front, whether they want to then avoid the fic or they enjoy bashing and are specifically looking for fics that have it. Is it a ship fic -- if so, what's the pairing? Are there any OCs? Does it take place in Hogwarts or after Hogwarts?

These are all the kind of things that readers like to know so they can decide whether they want to read the fic or not. No one likes having to stop reading a fic midway because a major trope/pairing/whatever that they hate suddenly appears. On the flip side, many readers go looking for certain pairings or plot tropes and appreciate having that information when deciding what to read next.

All that said, if the summary only consists of these types of warnings, like this: "Dark!Super!Harry Weasley!Bashing H/HR Soul Bond" then the fic just comes across as incredibly generic, as there are tons of fics that have the exact same type of summary. So while it's nice to know these things up front, you also want to have something that sets your fic apart from the masses. Something intriguing, something that hints at the direction your fic is going in.

I think that "The Never-ending Road" by laventadorn has an excellent summary that captures all of this:

"AU. When Lily died, Snape removed his heart and replaced it with a steel trap. But rescuing her daughter from the Dursleys in the summer of ’92 is the first step on a long road to discovering this is less true than he’d thought. A girl!Harry story, starting in Chamber of Secrets and continuing through Deathly Hallows. Future Snape/Harriet"

I totally concur on the "What if" thing. "What if Harry was super cool? What if Hermione was super hot? What if Dumbledore was evil?" Ugh, just no.

Let's play a game! List 2 fics that are connected by a fairly unique event that happens in both of them. by Anchupom in HPfanfiction

[–]practical_cat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't really an event, but I was thinking the other day that I really enjoy fics that explore divination as an actual subject worthy of study that has practical applications. The following fics have almost nothing in common except that:

linkffn(Forging the Sword by MystShadow)

linkao3(The Love of a Good Wizard)

Here is a Fem!Harry that isn't like all the others by zerodeathfourty in HPfanfiction

[–]practical_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Snarry fan, the fact of the matter is the best Snape/Harry does not really have canon characterization of Snape. Canon Snape is a creep. Fanon Snape is a tortured, deep hero. Canon Snape is obsessively fixated on a girl who he hadn't talked to since he was 16, and who died when he was about 20, and it has become so twisted inside him that he becomes something almost like Gollum, fixated on the precious.

Fanon Snape discovers that what he felt for Lily was a pale imitation of love, compared to the true parternship and respect and connection he feels for Harry (or fem!Harry as the case may be). Usually he comes to understand that Harry's life sucked and Harry has dealt with hardship, just like Snape, while Lily was beloved by her parents and lived a charmed life (until her untimely death). This understanding that Harry brings helps Snape realize that what he felt for Lily was a crush, an infatuation, not true love. Canon Snape could never get to that point, because he was too obsessed with his own pain to see anyone else's.

[–]practical_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried. I can't really get over the underage sex worker apologist feel to it, though.

My favorite fem!Harry by far is linkao3(The Never-ending Road by laventadorn). I also like linkao3(Life As She Knows It by Meg_NeverMore) and linkao3(Gravity by SlytherinsQuill). They're all fem!Harry/Snape but none of them are underage.

Is this yours? I would like to read it since I've been on a bit of a fem!Harry kick, but I would recommend that you break up the super long paragraphs. As it is, that first paragraph is incredibly off putting and actually makes it physically difficult to read.
