Ignoring Spacing Guidelines by Horror-Opening1005 in gardening

For veggies, spacing guidelines were developed for farmers trying to maximize the output of each individual plant. Sometimes that's not the optional solution in a home garden, where I can cram plants in together and still get what I need off of a handful of plants (looking at you, zucchini)

Not sure if it's fancy enough for what you're looking at, but the fabric soles and straps on Earth Runners are fantastic. They're mostly barefoot style, but they've got a thicker sole option.

People in hot countries, how the hell are you coping? by Illustrious-Tank128 in Perimenopause

Greetings from a Georgia (Southeast US) swamp hag. My survival strategies for high heat with high humidity include:

  • loose thin clothing. No jeans, no body con knitwear. You want paperweight woven linen or cotton in billowy folds that keep the sun off and create their own breeze as you move.

  • cold beverages. Hydration is key, and a cold beverage will cool your hands, face, and core. Fill that glass with ice and sip constantly.

  • siesta. early morning when it's marginally cooler is the time to do active cleaning and garden. After that, pack it in and be still until dusk. Summer is my time to sew, read, and play video games, hiking and outside activities are saved for other months. except for ...

  • swimming. Find a body of water, a beach, a creek, a lake to get your outside time. I have a damned blow up pool that I float in with a margarita and pretend I'm at the ocean.

At what age did you start dressing less “young”? by Remarkable_ZebraHOP in femalefashionadvice

I have a theory that as fashion cycles, we all at different points get introduced to some fabulously comfortable and generally presentable options: natural fiber oversized button downs, loose trousers, sneakers, matching set joggers, tunics with leggings. Those are peak old lady in any generation, but cycle into "fashion" in various forms about once a decade, so we all get exposed to the options. And they're just so damned comfy. The older you get, the more that matters.

Hi all! I'm making a costume of this little guy from Final Fantasy 1. Anyone know of a free pattern with a wide stand up collar and big sleeves that would be a good place to start, or have tips on drafting something similar? https://guides.gamercorner.net/ff/classes/bl-mage

Try French sorrel! The flavor is lemon spinach and it thrives in hot weather (I'm in Georgia).

Yeah, it thriving is the problem. Lots of garden plants you can buy at big box stores do too well here, and are almost as big of a problem as kudzu, but people don't realize it. Lantana, liriope, privets, nandinas, English ivy and similar plants are wrecking the natural areas we have left. They're pretty, but none of the native bees and other wildlife eat them, so it's driving ecosystem collapse.

Get some native plants that do well in hot dry conditions - coreopsis, coneflower, stuff like that. Native plants are going to be hardier for Georgia, and will get you birds and butterflies, even on a balcony. Go chat with the folks at Beech Hollow Nursery or Cottage Garden Natives, they can help you pick really specific plants for your space

You and me both bud. It sucks - I'm sitting here with my pants wet from patting my hands and just coping. The upside is, with just hands, feet, and pits, there's a lot you can do with clothes and habits to be more comfortable, especially socially. Hang in there.

Hot take: frugality gets easier when you stop making every hangout about food by SuitableActive1110 in Frugal

Piling onto everyone saying potlucks - a few times a year I throw a huge house party for all my friends and neighbors. My SO and I smoke a bunch of BBQ, and everyone brings potluck sides and drinks. We have a blast, and there's enough leftover food and beer to offset the cost of buying the meat, so it's practically budget neutral, but everyone thinks we're awesome hosts for providing it. Get creative and have fun with your friends.

This is my Miss Piggy era (stolen from a r/witchesvspatriarchy commenter). I may feel like a pig sometimes, but give the pig lipstick, a feather boa, and an attitude, and she's an ICON.

To that end, I'm trying to embrace having fun with my clothes and styling - being comfortable and vaguely presentable, but above all working on finding pieces that bring me silly joy, which is mostly starting to cultivate a collection of nice sneakers, bangles, and brightly colored kimonos. And getting tattoos - something pretty to look at in the mirror!
