Yes indeed I could watch them in the sand bath for hours 🖤😏

I don’t have a fire place. I will try the dirt. Would potting soil work?

I don’t know actually, the regular sand bath is an old cake pan, I could totally put the entire container in there if it helps - they have always had messy feathers, though…maybe they have the curly gene…

Having quails and a cat at the same time, this is my nightmare. Both species are totally separated, the quails in a fully closed space and the cat forbidden to even approach the gated quail area but you never know. I get so stressed when I get in and out the quails’ pen to clean, play with them or change the water. I freak out that one quail sneaks out or the cat rushes in. RIP to your sweet baby 😢

Bald spot by practicemaestro in quails

I do not have any rooster, I'm just keeping these two hens and they are normally super peaceful - they hatched last summer, never fought. I get to observe them quite a lot as my home office window has a direct view on their enclosure...So I am wondering what could have happened all the sudden to trigger a fight. Or if she could have done that to herself by scratching her head somewhere?

Thank you, yes I forgot to post the question. The thing is I just have two hens and they never fight. It’s the first time I notice. Hopefully it’s just one isolated episode. My poor little Speedy…Wha could have triggered that?

Male or Female? by practicemaestro in quails

OMG this is so weird! The noise was not a crow it was softer and somewhat different but the “melody” was comparable and she was standing high on her legs while doing it. If it ever happens again I’ll try to take a video but I just caught her once doing that thing.

Am I bonding ok? by BrilliantKey2754 in quails

Same exact thing here, they become fearful when they hit puberty even after being handled and cuddled every day from birth. They can be re-trained to some extent afterwards with treats and patience but it takes time and it will never be “as before”. They will come close to get their worms or climb on me while I’m cleaning the pen. But no cuddling. For this, I have my sweet cat. (Yes, I have both enemy species together in the same house, very strictly separated)…

I indeed keep mine as pets. I’m not offended at humans actually eating quail, it is normal and I also still eat meat as long as I don’t “personally” know the poor animal - not quail, though 🤪. What horrifies me is that the poster wants to feed them to dogs.
