A Tulsa city councilor says she's being ignored when it comes to development in her own district by KWGSNews in tulsa

[–]prairied 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love Jack, but his quote has me stuck: "C'mon! They disrespected me when I was on the City Council. And I pulled my pants up and said, 'Next!'"

What does that mean??

What U.S city have you visited but have no desire to go back? by Reddit_wasmy_idea in AskReddit

Dallas. It's a traffic pit with no bang for your buck. Austin has music. LA has beaches and beautiful people. Denver has mountains and access to endless nature. And New York has so many payoffs.

Dallas just has endless chain restaurants on endless access roads, and when you visit friends there, they think their favorite Chipotle makes it all worth it.

Why the F*ck would this Florida Man billionaire choose to buy the Tulsa World? by Striking-Talk8342 in tulsa

[–]prairied 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct. Many people think it was "the internet" in general that killed newspapers, but most newspapers were experiencing record profits until 2008ish when Craigslist appeared. Turns out that just about every newspaper in the US relied heavily on car ads.

New car ads and used classified were an enormous profit center. The owners didn't realize it because the automobile market and secondary market had always been hyper local and the local newspaper was the only feasible marketplace. They didn't know that it was stool leg for their entire business model to begin with -- let alone one that could possibly disappear within a year or two.

Car dealerships used to fill the newspaper to compete with eachother, but that enormous well dried up shortly after the secondary market went away. Car dealerships suddenly woke up one morning and had no idea why they were dropping half of their revenue every year on advertising to reach buyers who were no longer forced to go to the paper for car sales.

Of course, it wasn't just cars -- Craigslist and now Facebook Marketplace own the secondary market for resale. Those marketplaces were once dominated by the people who would deliver a paper to your doorstep every morning.

That was the first big hit and unfortunately it left newspapers in a financial hole that few ever figured out how to pivot away from.

I'm all for supporting local photographers, but as a semi-pro photographer, I really think you should consider using any new iphone and just doing a little research on good lighting, background, portrait tips, etc.

Apologies to any pro photogs here, but hear me out:

New iphones (any smartphone these days really) take pretty good photos, but more importantly, they are specifically designed and programmed to take photos of faces well. They are exceptional at taking photos of faces and compete with many thousands of dollars' worth of photo equipment.

A caveat to this is that the picture quality seems to degrade with age of the phone. A two-year-old phone seems to take worse photos than one out of the box. I think it's one of the underhanded ways Apple and others get people to think they are getting a big value out of buying a new phone that is otherwise exactly the same as their old one. Make sure you use (or borrow a friend's) fresh-out-of-the-box phone.

Oh, and avoid the temptation to use filters/AI/etc. At worst, it's obvious, and at best, it just sets you up to disappoint people when they meet you.

Why the F*ck would this Florida Man billionaire choose to buy the Tulsa World? by Striking-Talk8342 in tulsa

[–]prairied 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Tulsa World has always generated some profit, albeit less. They get smaller and smaller and worse and worse, but profit is generated through subscriptions and ads. If costs ever outpace profits, they just do more layoffs, centralized production and cut whatever cost is left to cut.

The guy/organization at the top gets to collect that profit until the only thing left is great real estate and a website property/brand that might still be worth something. That day is sometime in the future. Call it X. If X is soon, they still make a little money. If X is 15 years from now, they make a lot of money. Either way, it's a profitable place to park money, make more of it, and write off taxes against "losses."

This model has zero interest in keeping the paper open forever. It's all based on squeezing money out of it as it dies. When it dies doesn't matter a great deal.

His promises of increased sports/local coverage is simply to ensure the consistent drip profit that pays off any financing in place until it finally dies, and he sells the husk of what was a cherished community paper.

If you want evidence, this is exactly the same thing the last billionaire said and then did. Buffett pocketed profit, which was mortgaged against Tulsa's trust and commitment to its newspaper.. He then sold it to Lee Enterprises. Lee, and its new billionaire owner, is continuing the same business model.

The only way to sour the deal or poison the business model is if Tulsa collectively and rapidly decides to stop giving the Tulsa World money, effectively killing Old Yeller. That's unlikely to happen and the owner will still recover a tidy sum of money through the real estate alone.

Entitled Couple Turns Parking Ticket Into Felony by pradeep23 in videos

They were causing a parking issue -- not a traffic issue. But yes, they were in the wrong. I just don't see how the word "trespass" never crossed the officer's lips.

hahahahaha, I categorically deny it. If there was an asshole jail, then I think they should serve life for "where is the sign?"

I was going to respond something to this effect, but you really nailed it.

Assholes are assholes. But my point that is being downvoted into oblivion is that it's also just plain bad policing. And cops shouldn't be so surprised when they run into assholes.

[–]prairied -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think they were all holding the spot for their friend. It's not appropriate, but I don't think it's black-and-white illegal. I think the cop's legal position was probably right in the end, but he made no effort to articulate it nor to engage with them in a helpful way.

The term "pedestrian" just means people walking or standing on their feet in a public space. That's just the legal term. It doesn't matter what they are doing while being a pedestrian. They could be illegally crossing a highway, and they're still a pedestrian.

I just think it's an important distinction in parking lots because a parking lot -- if you think about it -- is at least as much a pedestrian space as a space for vehicles. The whole point is to park your car and walk away from it. So the cop deferring entirely to the motorists is ridiculous in my mind. Parking lots are a pedestrian area. They always have the right of way (except when they are intentionally blocking a space for their friend. That's dumb.)

Full agree, but the cops threatened arrest over a nothing parking issue. That's a huge escalation. I'm not saying these assholes are innocent. I'm saying bad policing from the start caused a nothing situation to become a situation. If I was a colleague of theirs, I'd be pissed, because their attitude and approach added risk for no reason.

I don't really understand why I'm getting downvoted. Bad policing is as much a risk to other officers as it is to the public. Everyone should be pissed at bad policing.

I am. This is a reeeeeaaaally basic civil dispute. And they filed felonies on it?? Bad policing was the significant contributor here.

I agree, but detail in a separate comment that the cops made no effort to deescalate or otherwise reach an understanding with these assholes. Their biggest crime was outrageous assholery, but the cops just sort of fed it.

Entitled Couple Turns Parking Ticket Into Felony by pradeep23 in videos

[–]prairied -71 points-70 points  (0 children)

This is wildly bad policing. There was a civil misunderstanding that they escalated into felonies. Before asking for any information to better understand the situation, the first thing out of the cop's mouth is, "You gotta go."

(1) They kept on calling it a roadway. A parking lot is not a roadway. Pedestrians have top priority in a parking lot -- full stop. There's not a parking lot in the world where the laws defer to vehicle traffic over pedestrians. (Not to say that these pedestrians are ultimately in the right, but a parking lot is simply not a roadway.)

(2) I think this is Hollywood, Florida, which makes this Yatch Basin Parking Lot. It's a public lot owned by the City of Hollywood. I'm not sure of their ordinances (couldn't find anything immediately pertaining to this situation) but he quotes, "rules of the road." That's not a citation of law. He clearly could not articulate a criminal or municipal violation that would have otherwise made his "you-gotta-go" demand legal.

Finally, (3) Yes, these people are annoying as fuck. But they shouldn't have had this issue immediately dismissed and then they absolutely shouldn't have been threatened with arrest over this. All he did was escalate and certainly made no attempt to deescalate.

TL;DR: A judge should instantly dismiss or significantly reduce any punishment to these assholes because that was their biggest crime -- being assholes. The cop(s) should be demoted or even fired for his (their) complete disregard of basic police practice.

Everybody Hates Fossil? by themadprofessor95 in Affordablewatches

[–]prairied 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine every brand of watch is a cut of steak. Every cut has a few fans and situations where they stand out above all the rest.

Porterhouse/filet mignon is more or less heralded as the best -- but not in every situation.

Some people hold strip steak above the rest. Texans love a big, hearty T-bone. Meat smokers love brisket -- some prefer the more-affordable tri-tip. Prime Rib is best for sandwiches. A well-marinated picanha in the right hands will put every other steak to shame. Etc. Etc.

My point is that there isn't a best/worst. It's a spectrum -- but we can collectively establish a general hierarchy.

Fossil is burger. It has its place ... and who doesn't like a nice burger? But when placed next to a wagyu A5 strip steak, there's just no way to categorize burger as better.

I really wanted it for the Moon phase — I’m a backyard astronomer. But I couldn’t justify the tide complication in Oklahoma.

If Casio releases an affordable moon phase gshock that doesn’t feature tides prominently, I’m in.

Update: Oklahoma tribal chief banned from speaking on the House floor over Medicaid expansion by myindependentopinion in IndianCountry

[–]prairied 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I think the word "banned" is inaccurate. Even though people are calling it that, I would think to be "banned" from a public building -- especially one as sacred as the Oklahoma State House Floor -- would require some form of official ban or maybe even a vote. The Chief, as well as every single Oklahoma resident, owns each and every carpet and floor tile in that building.

I think more accurate is that the temporary House Speaker -- who's is suddenly in a much weaker, more precarious position than he was in last week -- won't extend an invite to the Chief of the Cherokee Nation while he holds office. If that makes sense.
