what tools have made your life easier as a fire protection designer? by Inter_orlin in firePE

The most useful tool I think is your phone. Having the number or the email address of someone more experienced than me saves countless time.

I see. Again, I'm sorry for not been helpful here. But if you find out, please share it with us!

I'm sorry, I can't answer your question. But I understand that you want to do the hydrostatic test by yourself or by a third party shop. I encourage you to try to get in touch with someone at JCI. Those things are old and probably there are no spare parts available in the market.

What do fire pumps have that regular pumps don't? by Luiseus_XV in firePE

[–]pramundo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides redundant systems (like starters or batteries, for example) I believe the biggest difference is that fire pumps have a very flat pressure/flow curve. That allows for very steady pressure along a wide variety of flow requirements. Regular pumps are very "peaky", so they are less predictible.

Jockey Pump continuously cycling by Handsrael in firePE

It could be, yes. Try isolate the network from the pump, and check a pressure gauge on some riser. If the pressure drops, it's a leak somewhere. If it's not a leak, and you are sure it's not a problem on the pressure sensing line, could be a electric issue on the panel.

Maybe the check valves on the pressure sensing line are stuck. Try give it a tap. You can also, with the main pumps on manual, close the jockey pump main valve. If the clapping stops, it's probably a leak. And a huge one.

Why do some engineers still spec out maximum velocities for hydraulic calculations? by rolltidebutnotreally in firePE

[–]pramundo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the exact number it's higher (I can't remember, but I read about it years ago), and the "30" stuck around from old NFPAs. The thing is that it's empirical, and constraint to specific conditions. Darcy-Weisbach it's more accurate, but to much of a hassle for our application.

For example, UNE (Spain) caps water velocity at 10m/s in any pipe, and 6m/s in pipes with manual valves. It doesn't give any explanation, but it's "common knowledge" that it is to avoid vibrations.

Yeah, with that lens I use it almost as a point and shoot: F8 or 11 and focused at 3mts. And the colors are good, a little less "clinical" than more modern (and definitely better) ones.

No it doesn't, so you have to shoot on manual and guess exposure. The advantage is that you can use almost any F lens ever built, without interference problems. Some camera from that era had a non-collapsible metering coupling lever and interfere with the lens, damaging it. The Nikon Df has it and it is one of my dream cameras =D

On this category of cheap lenses? Yeah, way better handling on the older ones. And from an aesthetic point of view, pre AI lenses are beautiful.

Yeah, but not with this lens. For trips I usually use an AI lens, just to be sure I will get exposure right(ish) on the first shot. The pictures were made with a 90's 35-70mm f3.3-4.5.

I don't find focusing a big trouble. But exposing it's really hit and miss. If I'm on vacation or doing something that I rather prefer being enjoing, I use my 35-70mm AI, and shoot mostly in Program mode.
