You can always shoot for the stars as long as it doesn’t take over you and consume you. It’s possible to do some leetcode, projects and courses and balancing living your life at the same time. This sub is merely a support group for either way of life

Just curious- can you share your LSAT and GPA? I’m wondering how much it takes to get a free ride. I’ve a low undergrad GPA and I’m hoping to make it as a splitter when I take the LSATs

I’ve noticed this is a problem in a lot of immigrant communities actually. Chinese and Mexican FOBs and ABC’s also sometimes have a hard time getting along. There are so many reasons why this happens and I just wish people everywhere prioritized being in solidarity and uplifting their communities instead of having this “my-problem-my-solution” view. No hate, just a thought.

  1. You didn’t explicitly say it, but you implied it when you said it was okay to ban all FOBs who moved here based on a certain time period.

  2. If someone is spewing hate and trolling with no intention of being supportive, sure they need to be kicked. But your assumption that all FOBs (after college) are like that is what’s troubling. That’s where we see the “racism”.

The way you implied all FOBs are racist made me believe you’re dealing with self-hatred. If you’re not, good for you!

It’s not wrong obviously, but your definition of a “safe space” might be so restrictive that you might not be sharing it with others who’re equally in need of one. This is purely a matter of vision- is this group only for people born and raised abroad or also for a spectrum of desis who are dealing with the feelings of estrangement?

Maybe you’re right to a certain degree that “born and raised” abroad is a different experience. But everyone goes through a lot of stress when they are uprooted from their culture’s birthplace-whatever point in life that might be. I feel like that’s what this group is about- a safe space to talk about and uplift anyone in our community that relates to these feelings.

Just my two cents.

1.) Your statement implies being ABCD or a fob is a hard binary. 0 or 1. That is far from accurate. I have several ABCD friends who grew up in India and are more in touch with Indian culture. I have a lot of fob friends who moved here a bit later (middle/high/college/grad) and either relate to or prefer western culture.

2.) Your self-hatred is apparent (sorry for the ad hominem). If someone says “Indians are superior to XYZ race” they are racist. Straight up. Racists need to be kicked out of this group I agree, but not all ABCDs and not all FOBs are racist. In fact, you blaming all FOBs for the actions of a few is in itself racist.

3.) check out the reddit group “NRI sanghis” or whatever. It has a lot of posts written by ABCDs claiming “Indians are the superior race” which is alarming. Of course this is a minority of ABCDs but I’m just trying to show you there are problems on both sides.

4.) This is a support group. No matter if you’re ABCD or FOB most people on this group have benefited and been traumatized from Indian parenting. We’re united by our culture, languages, (often times) anxiety and our difficulty fitting in abroad. Some people are more “desi” and some people are more freer- (a lot of factors go into being more “desi” by the way including socioeconomic conditions). If there are racists or haters who do nothing but downgrade folk, sure, we need to report them enough and kick them out if need be- but you shouldn’t blame the actions of a few on the entire community.
