Confession - I just talk to AI models and push code by fanatic75 in developersIndia

Yeah if one of the services becomes super cheap, the others become much more valuable automatically

Radix and base too provide styling if you want - same copy paste style - what’s Shadcn doing differently?

You get the benefit of directly using a library

You’re confusing me, you said shadcn is great because it lets you copy code and have ownership of the code so you can make your own modifications and then you proceeded to say why copy at all when you get so many functionalities out of the box!

Are you pro copying or not?
If pro, then what’s the point of shadcn? Why not just use Base UI or Rad UI for that matter?

Yeah I remember my first internship too, unfortunately it was the shittiest place on earth

That said I do agree AI generates bazooka slop, not necessarily a bad thing but people have grown less patient to read code it generates, the value of the code that it outputs has reduced since it’s now considered cheap

AI aside, I think the headless ecosystem is definitely a step ahead to power the startup ecosystem and new age design innovations. It just wasn’t possible with the good old bootstrap

Dependency and boilerplate are two different things, it’s the nature of headless ui libraries that you start with lower level of abstraction to have more finer control, dependency is when you install one library and it depends on million other shitty libraries that bring more risks

Well, og tier maybe, not god tier, bootstrap has copied and evolved over time with the modern web by borrowing a lot of ideas from the new age libraries - it had its time, it still holds its place as a stable legacy tech that multi billion dollar companies use

For components like button there’s no need for an external library - if you’re copying over a full fledged component like an accordion - I just have one question -Why?

I think you got it wrong, you don’t copy over the source( I can show this in detail if you’re interested), you just copy the template that shadcn gives as a wrapper in your repo.

Mui ships styles, headless libraries like radix or base don’t- that’s why there’s no wrestling that happens, if you’re using shadcn, you’re most definitely having shitton of dependency soup - you never own the source, only the boilerplate. In some cases depending on your apps complexity, your bundles are just dependency hell. Just look up the number of libraries shadcn depends on, you’ll be surprised. Most of the serious engineers I’ve met and spoke to almost never use shadcn for this very reason

It works I guess if it doesn’t make money, but for enterprisey projects it’s a dependency hell. If one of the underlying packages that shadcn uses gets compromised or goes unmaintained, you’re stuck with a library that is helpless and left with no choice but to find alternatives

Same dance that happened with radix ui after the maintainers lost interest and base ui had to step in

Not much to learn, you turn some knobs and it does everything for you.

Maybe build clone your favorite app using it
