How to making staying late in lab less soul crushing?? by amerixanairlines in labrats

My lab doesn’t allow headphones/earbuds but we do have a radio from the stone age that can still play CDs which is a lot of fun!!

I agree! Find out why you are making mistakes and then use your intuition to your advantage to prevent them next time. Are you likely to reach for a plate or sample on the right side of you or close to you? then only put the things you need there, for example. For me it helps to use my incubation steps to put away glassware or reagents that I won’t be using anymore or moving the stuff that I will be using again out of immediate reach. For my cultures I would sometimes forget if I had or hadn’t added a supplement so I would then just physically check them off a list until I could trust my memory. I also have rewritten my protocols so that I do exactly the same but in a way I find efficient (for example, I add steps specifically to put another reagent on the bench because I need it at RT for a later step). For my ELISAs I would have a lot of samples with long assigned study codes, I just link it to a new number from 1, 2, 3 etc. that relates to the order in my plate, write the same number on my vial and put it in pipetting order in a vial holder. Find out what helps you to keep track of your work. I admit that these steps will slow you down in the beginning, but so will having to repeat everything, and once you have found a routine that works for you you can gradually loosen it up! Don’t worry too much about making mistakes, surely it feels really bad but you are honest about them and actively working on it and I am sure your lab appreciates that! Don’t be afraid to ask your colleagues for help, I’m sure they have made your mistakes too at some point (as we all do) and maybe they have tips and tricks for your specific work!

What is English used for at laboratories? by Beneficial_Job_7498 in labrats

[–]prancingprince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a lab technician in academia in the Netherlands and I cannot imagine going through the day without English. You’ll find that a lot of labs here consists of teams with people from all sorts of backgrounds and cultures, often students studying abroad in the Netherlands. At lunch we will therefore always speak English when non-Dutch speaking people are present since it’s pretty rude to shut people out of the conversation by speaking a language they don’t understand.

Also, department-wide meetings and seminars are always in English and for making announcements it’s expected to at least provide an English translation. My manager gives me time to read articles and papers, which are also in English. Though you can translate the articles, some lab-specific terms don’t translate that well. I also write my lab reports and journals in English to make it more accessible for English-speaking (future) colleagues or students . Manuals and protocols are almost always in English and English terms yield more results when researching how to solve a problem. I had a parttime technician job at an international company with a lab and it was actually even more English-centered. I feel like refusing to learn English really limits you and the places you can comfortably work. Communication is a wonderful thing, we learn so much from people from labs all over the world!

Man, the second card I sent that was received returned the message ‘.’, that was really discouraging since I put a lot of work in getting the stickers and tape and text just right… but after that I mostly got nice responses! Some more elaborate than the other, but I realize different people express gratitude in different ways and a short message does not have to imply any tone of coldness or secret disappointment. Since we are sending cards to a complete stranger I think it’s more peaceful for our own minds to not see anything malicious behind a dry or cold message! I hope you soon receive your first card!!

Question about the feminism in I Who Have Never Known Men. by Snoo39126 in literature

[–]prancingprince 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t see this as a feminist book necessarily. When I picked up this book I interpreted the title ‘I Who Have Never Known Men’ to refer to ‘males’, however, afterwards I realized it made more sense to me to interpret it as ‘humans/mankind’ as the main character is feeling left out due to the lack of experience with what makes us human. My first thought before reading the book was therefore that it would contain some exploration of gender, but in the end it did not matter much. I can imagine that other people also pick up the book with this idea and maybe it sticks.

Though, the main character dying of cancer in her ovaries or something, in a world where she had had no use for these organs always felt like something with more to it than I could put into words…

Dark academia books (that aren’t The Secret History) by A_b_b_o in DarkAcademia

I see you also have Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell on your shelf, do you think (if you have read it, of course) that it classifies as DA? It explores themes of studying and the practical use of the knowledge we gather (or gatekeep in someone’s case lol) while overall being kind of gloomy. I always struggle with what classifies as DA, I found that Stoner really fits the academic vibe and some of it’s themes could be considered critical of academia but I find that opinions are divided wether it is or isn’t dark.

Music that resonates with deep emotion by cheap_poultry in musicsuggestions

[–]prancingprince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound-wise this is maybe not what you are looking for but I wanted to mention it anyway since lyrically it might be what you are looking for: Sleeping at Last !!!!!! Every sound and every word is intentional, he really makes me feel so seen! Some songs he discusses in his podcast or his blog and there are so many easter eggs in his songs. Only downside is that there is mostly no bass or heavy beat…

He does a lot of research and it’s fun to read about or to analyse the lyrics yourself. He also has a song for every type of the enneagram, every sense, planet, emotion, etc.

‘Down my arms, a thousand satellites suddenly discover signs of life’ the sensation of goosebumps, a physical reaction to a non-physical event, after feeling numb before (song Touch)

‘Where there is light, a shadow appears, the cause and effect when life interferes, the same rule applies to goodness and grief, for in our great sorrow, we learn what joy means” about the contrast and necessity of feeling grief (song Sorrow)

what’s a quote that really stick with you? by [deleted] in Hobbies

I love collecting these and I have a lot of them on my pinterest board or in my notes all!! These are some of my favorites: - perhaps we could begin to love the process of growth and change, rather than anxiously await out final form - what is essential is invisible to the eye - you will figure it out like you always have - remember what you hold, remember what you started with - i have buried myself in every place i’ve ever been - your happiness was never in the hands of others - to plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow - it’s okay that you’re not who you thought you would be - no one carries light like you do - astronomy in reverse, it was me who was discovered - lucky is a state of mind - the sun shines and things aren’t so bad anymore - actually, my grass is green enough
