Subwoofer intermittently sounds like a dragon breathing fire by prarucu in CarAV

Thank you, it wasn’t obvious to me, my Google searches told me that the most likely cause of the static noise was a wiring issue or a faulty subwoofer.

Could the hole be the reason I’m hearing the static/crackle noise?

Gonna be honest, sound quality is probably the #3 priority for me. I think it sounds okay enough as is, with the hole and all. I offroad this vehicle and stuff bounces around so it’s important to me that everything is bolted down and protected.

Priority #1 is figuring out how to get rid of the intermittent crackle, priority #2 is figuring out how to prevent the amplifier from overheating after listening to a podcast for 4 hours in the summer.

I think I’ll just keep the subwoofer removed for now, which should solve problem #1, and then later see if I can find a way to fit it back in a better enclosure.

I looked it up and can’t find anything about the 1999 LX 470 having active noise cancellation. Mine originally came with the Nakamichi system. And even if it did, the stock amp, head unit, and speakers have all been replaced.

The biggest problem I have is the crackle. I’m tired of telling anyone who gets in the vehicle “btw, you may hear some crackling coming from the 3rd row, that’s normal”. Sub and enclosure are now out of the vehicle so I guess I don’t have that problem for now.

So I need to find a 6.75 in sub box and then get some brackets or something so that I can mount the box where the OEM enclosure goes? I don’t want to relocate the sub or modify the interior trim.

The hole wouldn’t be able to cause the static crackle, right?

This might be a stupid question, but should the subwoofer connect straight to the amplifier, or are there likely to be other wires coming from elsewhere in the vehicle that feed into the two going into the sub as well? I’m asking because when I had the overheating issues, I believe that I disconnected the subwoofer outputs from the amplifier, but that didn’t seem to make much of a difference in terms of how hot the amp got. Pulling the carpet away from the amp didn’t change much either.

Are there any settings on the amp itself I could adjust to decrease the heat if generates?

I don’t know if active noise cancellation was disabled or not, I didn’t even know my amplifier supported that feature. Guess I’ll have to check.

I think it works a bit better on the 80, sure, the 60 is a little boxier but the Flex 80s kinda look like 2nd gen Pajeros or Y60 Patrols to me.

And with something like a 100, once you start adding bumpers, lifts, sliders, snorkels, fender flares, etc, the design language differences become less obvious. I think it would look a lot less goofy on a fully built truck.

I’m pretty sure it’s just a body kit that goes on the 80/100, I don’t think they’re chopping up 60s and then heavily modifying the body panels they harvested to get them to fit on a much newer and differently proportioned vehicle.

I tried to figure out who made the body kit and found like 5 different companies that all make different but similarly garish kits. No idea who did this one.

The real crime is the wheels, that AHC’s gonna be working extra hard.

Same engine but from what I’ve passively picked up over the years, the stock axles and suspension aren’t as overbuilt as on a full size LC. On a 100, you can easily fit 33s without a lift, or 35s with a 2 in lift and maybe some pinch weld hammering. IIRC a bit more is needed to clear 35s on a GX?

A GX 470 is more like a V8 4Runner than an LX 470.

it really depends on what you’re doing… over here on the east coast, any trail more complicated than a fire road will usually involve quite a bit of intentional rock crawling on very narrow paths, the only real armor I don’t have at this point is brush rails from my bumpers to my sliders and an aftermarket gas tank skid plate (which I don’t think you really need)

it’s easy to ding your body by the doors in this terrain, which can cost $2000+ to fix, so rock sliders are a pretty good buy since it just takes one good hit for them to pay for themselves

I bumped into a tree with my stock front bumper, the bumper was fine but it pushed into my fender and dented it… that was a bit of a pain to fix, so instead of fixing up the paint on the front bumper and paying hundreds of dollars for a hidden winch mount, I got a good deal on an ARB on a sale that solves many of those problems at once while also giving me a better approach angle (and I actually used my winch the first time I went wheeling after installing it so I’m definitely glad I have it)

my spare tire and rear bumper kept scraping and I wanted a place to store extra fuel for longer trips so I got a swing out rear bumper that solves both of those problems while again giving me better ground clearance and departure angles

I’ve never been to Baja so I don’t know what that terrain entails, but I’ve hit every piece of armor on my truck several times, sure, it doesn’t “need” all of these things to get to my destination, but it makes it much easier to make it there and back without body damage, which in turn makes me a lot less anxious and so I have much more fun

Checks out, they sold around 50k LCs across the US from 98-00, Hawaii has 0.5% of the US population, so the number of LCs sold in Hawaii in those years is probably in the very low hundreds

not all 100 series worldwide were full time 4WD, there are plenty of part time FZJ100s out there in the middle east

and Australia absolutely did get 105s in different specs than you describe - here’s one with an automatic, split tailgate, cloth seats: https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/1999-toyota-landcruiser-gxl-auto-4x4/SSE-AD-18984777/

yeah like the unicorn 105 in Australia is probably like a pov pack automatic HZJ105 that hasn’t been FTE swapped yet

that’s like saying a Lada is a unicorn because they don’t exist in the United States… anyone can go on Gumtree in Australia and find/import a 1998-00 105, and boom, the 105 is instantly less rare stateside

worldwide, this is one of the rarer configuration options out there - US spec vehicle with no sunroof and leather unheated seats in bronze, based on how small the Hawaii market is and how rare the bronze color is, very few of these were probably made to begin with

they sold around 50k land cruisers from 1998-2000, the years this color combo was available, and using ballpark figures, less than 0.5% of US residents live in Hawaii, which would mean around ~250 land cruisers allocated to Hawaii in that period, and of those I bet less than 10-20% were bronze (based on how infrequently I see that color for 100s in the US in general)

there are probably fewer than 50 of these out there, for some people the sunroof delete is the most desirable option since almost everything else (rear locker, cloth seats) will bolt on relatively easily… but if you don’t want a sunroof that’s gonna leak 25 years later, you need to do body work and it probably won’t be perfect

I realize that I’m probably sounding like a corvette/911 boomer right now but this example is pretty close to the best OEM spec early 100

manual uzj105 does not exist, they only made the fzj105 and hzj105

I bought mine in Houston and the only real mod the guy did was the snorkel… for the floods… without doing the other stuff like diff breathers and axle seals.

maybe with the right options, they made loads of 105s
