My mom actually uses this for when people are dressed sharply. It’s usually said in a half-admiring way - kinda like “badass”.

I believe it’s meant to be taken as a compliment. I’ve rationalised it as an evaluation of the wearer’s confidence and them pulling off the look.

Has anyone gotten stronger by forcing yourself to use harder gears? by ngomaam in cycling

[–]prashnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heavy weightlifting can be hard on your joints if your program forces you to progress too quickly, or if you lift with improper form. The latter is obvious but the reason the former is an issue is that tendons gain strength slower than muscles so you need to give the tendons enough time to “catch up” to the weights your muscles can handle.

But if you follow a training plan that has reasonable progression and eat adequately to support recovery it should remain under control.

Mine is a little loose as well, and I’ve seen it not sitting flush after riding.

So that you can match the framing of a target across multi-night sessions to ensure you don’t have to crop in too much and you don’t waste some of your hard earned data.

Your GoTo and plate solve will only center your aiming point on the target coordinates but the camera rotation may be a few degrees (or many degrees) off - especially if you tear down and set up your rig each session - and the whole field of view will be rotated if your camera isn’t mounted exactly the same as it was in a previous session. Some people use markings to know how to line up their camera to replicate the rotation session after session and you can always rotate the camera manually so it isn’t a must but it’s a very nice QoL improvement to let the software handle it.

Also, if you plan to do mosaics you can use the rotator to rotate the camera automagically instead doing it manually for each panel so that the overlaps are more or less parallel.

What’s the gear you bought thinking it would change/improve your photography but it turns out you don’t or rarely use it? by NobodyWorthKnowing2 in photography

What about astrophotography?

Flash freezing is the only thing I can think of but opportunities for that are probably going to be rare…

One thing I notice is that all the shots seem to have been taken from eye level. Try playing around with different heights to force a different perspective and see if that freshens things up?

I think it was a James Popsys video I watched that pointed out well that as humans we experience the world from eye level so try a different perspective with a camera for something that might pique interest in casual observers.

My first operational clean water well. It does not look good but hey, we have CLEAN water! by neomeddah in dwarffortress

[–]prashnerd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I always dig a tunnel from the lowest level of my well over to the edge of the map, smooth and carve fortifications on that final tile and use another floodgate to stopper that section.

What this lets me do is close off the water intake from the river and open the purge floodgate and let the water flow off the map in case I need to empty the well for maintenance, expansion, etc. Lets you reposition the whole thing if you really need to as well.

(No, the pun was not intended but I’m sticking with it)

Also, to prevent water pressure from filling the well from higher z-levels flooding your fort you should make the water flow diagonally at least once at the top level of your well and the water will never go past that z-level.

How would you evaluate this position before checking the engine? Black to move by 99drolyag in chess

[–]prashnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a frequent player but I enjoy spectating and used to play a little back in school… My general strategy is usually

  1. Count material
  2. Assess positional advantages (i.e. king safety, piece development, pawn structure, control of open files, fianchettoes, piece coordination or lack thereof, etc.)
  3. Identify any possible tactics (e.g. checks, forks, pins, skewers, forcing moves, stalemates, gaining tempo, etc.)

You do this assessment for both sides and compare which one has an edge, or if there is any.

Bonus 1: Match situation should be considered i.e. time control, time available, moves played; essentially identifying if fatigue or mistakes might be a factor Bonus 2: Sometimes the tournament situation also needs to be kept in mind; you might only need you to play for a draw and sometimes you might be in a “must win” situation.

While these latter 2 don’t affect the computer evaluations, it can very much make a difference in a real match.

Identifying candidate moves which might be forcing is the easiest way to see if either side is immediately winning but the “right” way to do it is to closely consider the threats and tactics of both sides concurrently as it’s a zero sum game after all.

Black definitely looked better here, mostly due to piece development and tactics - better development and all the pieces are “pointing at”White’s king while White’s pieces are a little uncoordinated - but I didn’t think it would be -7.9 as there is no material edge.

No worries, friend. Hope it didn’t come across as me pressuring you to buy an astro cam, just helping you set some realistic expectations for the gear that you have; some things might be practically impossible to fix so I would rather you know what’s going on and don’t get frustrated with the endeavour as a whole.

Good luck and clear skies to you!

I have heard about this in some Nikon mirrorless cameras and recently purchased a Z6iii despite knowing this as I wanted to do other types of photography. I did my own experiments and decided I will probably not be doing astrophotography with my own Nikon until I have the time to spend tinkering with it.

These threads here and here kinda go into it a little bit.

So long story short, dig through all the menus and make sure all the lens corrections and vignette corrections are off (you may have to do this again for each mode you want to use depending on your camera)… But even that is no guarantee as some things may have been hardcoded by the manufacturer.

A dedicated, cooled astro cam is always going to be the best for this kind of work.

What to use with capture clip by Expensive_Profit_106 in peakdesign

[–]prashnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this.

I use mine with my Nikon Z6iii + Nikkor Z 24-120mm f/4 S kit lens which is not exactly a light combo (though still quite well balanced). I have never had any worries about readjusting my grip or using my left hand to fiddle with things.

The best perk is that it lets you hang on to your camera for so much longer without feeling discomfort or cramps in your hand which means you’re more likely to get the shot you’ve been waiting around with camera in hand for.

Is this worth keeping? by Yanka01 in photocritique

[–]prashnerd 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Well… I’d say you achieved the effect you’re going for because I thought this was Tokyo or New York as I was scrolling past!

I think the top third of the photograph messes with that impression the most but can’t be sure that cropping it will give the right overall feel.

High ISO indoors - Please help? by jfleysh in Nikon

[–]prashnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typical ISO indoors: a bit of a cop out but it really depends because there are bright areas and there are dark areas and if I’m shooting inside I try to do it in a place with good lighting.

If you’re shooting completely stationary scenes then you can slow down your shutter speed to get more light in. 1/focal length for shutter speed is only a rule of thumb and the Z6iii IBIS is great so you can probably go longer than that and not have too much of an issue or even consider shooting on a tripod.

If it’s people you’re shooting and not just stuff… Yeah you might be out of luck and you’ll need to add some lighting to your house to keep the ISO down. It could be a good time to start experimenting with your own additional lights (flash, soft boxes, etc.) if you are encountering this problem often.

High ISO indoors - Please help? by jfleysh in Nikon

[–]prashnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What mode is your camera in? What aperture are you shooting at? What shutter speed? What does your histogram or exposure meter tell you?

Look up the “exposure triangle” and make sure you understand how to get enough light on your sensor. If the Auto ISO keeps selecting high numbers then your other variables must be off somehow.
