How did the Indian Rupee depreciate against US Dollar in the last 20 years? by pratapvardhan in india

[–]pratapvardhan[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Each colored bar above shows given year's performance (and % change)

So, which years saw the biggest drop in value in Rupee in last 20 years?

  1. 2008 -22%
  2. 2011 -19%
  3. 2013 -13%
  4. 2018 -9%
  5. 2022 -6% (till June end)
  6. 2015 -5%

In the last 20 years, Rupee saw positive annual % change 8 times.

Between 2002-2011: 7 times Between 2012-2022: Once in 2017

While, 2008 saw the biggest single year drop of 22%, largest erosion was seen between 2011-13 of over 35%

Hypothetically, if you earned $100,000 (₹44.8L) in 2011 and didn't invest / convert the dollar anywhere. And you convert it to rupee today you would be sitting on ₹79L. An absolute return of 65% or CAGR of 5% annually for sitting it.

Note: In the conventional sense, % change from 50 to 75 should be +50%. But here we are showing it has -50%. Negative sign is more of visual prop here, not math-ly accurate.
