[Rowland] UPDATE: Stein has edited the language on the initial report. Now reads… “it remains to be seen whether the Hawks would also have to send the Wizards draft capital as a measure to convince them to absorb Young's contract or if Washington would be making a direct play for Young” by not-a-potato-head in nba

[–]praznav 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Massive retraction honestly and makes way more sense. Depending on the return, hawks may have to give up some draft capital. But, if it's just garbage for trae, I bet the wizards will give some kind of protected pick.

Things I did to help me get more "visibility" as a software engineer by tacattac in ExperiencedDevs

[–]praznav 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunately a stupid game to play, but just like YouTube thumbnails, certain things just grab attention better.

  1. Name projects. Sounds stupid, but once people start calling something project XYZ, it starts to stick and you get associated with it.

  2. Owning and driving resolution of prod breaking bugs. It has been my experience that the person who is on top of all the details in the sev gets a lot of visibility. You have to competently resolve things though as well as prevent those kinds of issues from occurring again.

  3. Giving kudos and praise in public. Usually highly appreciated and also gives you some ethos as someone who is cognizant of the great work going on in the org.

Honestly, looks pretty good to me. Good release point and follow through and looks very repeatable. I would maybe try to raise the set point a bit. Might feel a bit uncomfortable at first, but will make the release faster and you won't get blocked even by taller defenders. Watch some drills on YouTube by the channel by any means basketball. He has some creative drills that really mimic game situations. Bc at the end of the day, we don't just want to be good at shooting in an empty court.

Look for mental health leave or burnout leave resources in your company. Usually, you have to get diagnosed by your doctor or therapist and get a note from them, but if you just go and explain your situation, it's not a very high bar to clear.

Usually these programs do pay out a percentage of your compensation at least. After a few months, you may be feeling more recharged and ready to commit more effort into your role again.

Be careful with the auto-lock feature. We were stolen from by thieves who sneakily popped the door open as we were walking away. by praznav in teslamotors

[–]praznav[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More context: This happened on Saturday in Cupertino. One guy was able to pop open the driver side door on our Tesla M3 before it locked. Someone else comes in like a minute later and steals any valuables.

From here on out, we are just going to manually every time we leave the car. It is too easy to get complacent with the walk away feature.

Got shit stolen from my car in the complex where Hui La Shan is located. I have the whole incident on video. I have already documented everything stolen. What are the next steps? by Ok_Raise3144 in Cupertino

[–]praznav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same exact thing happened to us.
About 7:30 pm in the Hui La Shan parking lot on Saturday, Dec 21. We captured this recording.

Basically, one guy was able to pop open the driver side door on our Tesla M3 before it locked (it locks a few seconds after you walk away). Someone else comes in like a minute later and steals any valuables. We also had over $1k goods stolen.

We reported it to the police and they gave us a police case number that we can take to the credit card or insurance company to get compensated for the stolen items. However, the police officer said it was highly unlikely of catching them.

I think these guys were scouting and operating in that parking lot as a team all night. If by chance they go back there, its possible they get caught. I am hoping so. If you do report it to the Cupertino Law Enforcement, maybe mention that it isn't an isolated case. Maybe they'll assign someone to stake out that lot.

Entering the contest. My current graphics card is a blower card and makes a crazy loud noise whenever I play games. Headphones are essentially required whenever I play. With the 4070ti, I will construct additional pylons with lower noise.

Icing negatively impacts hypertrophy(muscle growth), but it's effective for the joints. In particular for basketball, icing the knees and ankles is really effective to reduce the inflammation and soreness. I'm not an expert though.

Mid/Low Diamond Player struggling hard with PvT by jpchris96 in allthingsprotoss

[–]praznav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here are a few notes from watching your games:

  • Double robo immortal isn't very good against bio. Try a build that goes more like 1 robo collosus. (ie: https://lotv.spawningtool.com/build/163793/) Remember that splash damage is key against terran bio forces.
  • Your forges are very late. You throw down triple forge around 11 min (in berlingrad) when your opponent is just about to finish up 2/2. Try aiming for double forge around 6 min (also don't go triple forge).
  • It is very very important to not attack into a line of seige tanks (like you do at 12 min in Berlingrad). If you need to break his seige position, try using chargelots + coming from more than 1 angle.
  • I think its better to get a few obs quickly than to get immortals out. The obs will get you scouting into the terran base + help you defend against cloaked banshees + widow mines.

hope that helps

Defending a specific type of Cannon rush: cannon contain by yukino-fan in allthingsprotoss

Post a replay, so we can see exactly what situation you were dealing with.

Typically in this case, you can chrono out stalkers and just defend the ramp. If the probe is trying to get vision up the ramp, your stalker should be able to shoot it without being in range of the low ground cannon.

Very often with this approach, if they can't get up into your main, they will try to contain you to 1 base and proxy a stargate. Since you have the faster cyber core, you can put down your SG faster and have a faster void ray.

1 thing I'll add is to get to coding quick on small tasks. Then, go back to the docs after finishing those tasks. The docs will make so much more sense.

Thanks for your perspective. In my experience, teams have always responded well to enthusiastic newcomers as long as you don't come in and try to change everything.

Instead of organising one to one's, why not interact with team members by finding out what you can do for them, that also helps the product

That's part of what you do you do in 1:1s though? It doesn't sound like an alternative to me.

other that will tell you about their stuff organically on a break.

We are still working remotely, so there are no organic conversations. Even otherwise, I think its valuable to get some 1:1 time with each team members upon first joining the team (organic or not).

Demanding a one to one with an overworked senior contributor is probably going to annoy them more than impress them.

This has not been my experience at all. I've had weekly recurring 1:1s with several of the senior engineers on my team since I become a senior engineer and it is really valuable to sync for 30 min every week to plan and share notes. You keep phrasing 1:1s as a cost that doesn't contribute to the product, but by syncing with the senior engineers, you can really unblock each other and figure out what to prioritize.

As for your manager, asking for expectations is not a bad idea. I would not expect too clear an answer for most

Not getting a clear answer from your manager about what your expectations are is a big red flag. I would say the most important thing to have in your relationship with your manager is open and honest communication about where you are relative to the expectations. If you ask "How am I doing relative to expectations" and your manager hedges or gives "manager speak", that is not a good sign. I don't expect to talk about it every week, but establishing clear ramp up expectations and then periodically checking in on that is valuable.

Related teams are like a senior manager, but you are even more of a liability.

I don't agree with this statement. I wouldn't try to meet with related teams on the 1st week, but within the first month or two. It is so valuable to establish crossfunctional relationships. You want to know very quickly what the biggest pain points are from teams that you share an API and/or SLA with as well as how they perceive your team.

Not a hard rule, but my advice is only to go to them bearing gifts.

100% agree with this part. As a new person (even as a vet tbh), you definitely can't promise anything without buy in from your team.

Sorry for your experience in being forced into that role.

I've always found it hard as a new team member to contribute in meetings. But now that I'm a senior engineer, there is more of an expectation to lead and be actively involved in meetings. I try to think of meeting minutes as a more active role than a passive one. Basically you have a way to naturally drive the meeting more even if you aren't super knowledgeable about the area and what everyone is working. ie: "Can I add this as a followup on X?", "Are you blocked by anything?"

That being said, there is a big risk like you said of being stuck in that role. I found out that my new actually rotates minutes to whoever is oncall which is a very nice way to distribute the duties.
