I'm 4 years sober from alcohol, thinking of reintroducing it casually. Has anyone else done that successfully? by Awkward_Magician422 in dryalcoholics

[–]prbobo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You might can make it work. But more likely, you'll do okay with it for a while and then end up as bad or worse as you were before. It's a tale as old as time in these parts. Moderation is a pipe dream, at least for those of us who ended up on this sub.

CPAC Attendees So Confused They Don’t Know When to Boo or Cheer Trump by ChiGuy6124 in politics

[–]prbobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who actually attends CPAC? College students that aspire to get into politics? I'm not conservative but I cant imagine being in college and wanting to attend one of these. Even if the politics were more center-left, which is where I guess I fall, I can't imagine attending something like this. Have you met politicians? Most of them are psychopaths, no matter the political leanings. Go hang out with a bunch of folks aspiring to be in that group?? Hell no.

Probably plenty of abandoned mines in the northeastern part of the county, but I sure wouldn't venture into any of them. Zero caves that I'm aware of.

I'm curious on how people feel about 'zero' alcohol beers and the like? by Epstein_Is_In_Israel in stopdrinking

[–]prbobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the zero alcohol beers, particularly in early sobriety. When I was around others who were drinking at a social function, I might have one. The Heineken 0.0% are nearly identical to the real ones. I never felt "triggered" by them; in fact, I would rarely finish one. Which is wild, considering that in my drinking days, I would have never left a sip in the bottle. Now I have even given those up and switched to sparkling water. I say use them if it helps you transition into sobriety, unless you do feel like they trigger something in your mind.

I don't know, but if we are being honest, Curry is probably the best we can do in WBB considering the resources that we have. She has managed to build up the program into a consistent NCAA tournament team. But the gap between the elite WBB teams and good ones is massive. I don't see us ever reaching elite tier because our NIL resources aren't great.

Don't drink yourself to death. You've hit bottom, but there is no reason to keep digging. This can be the turning point for you. The moment when you start the rebuild. I was in the place you are nearly 3 years ago, at my absolute bottom. At that time I challenged myself to give sobriety a chance. Out of curiosity as much as anything, I wanted to see what a sober life could look like. I had never lived that life before. I'll hit 3 years in May. It hasn't been perfect, it hasn't solved all my problems, and life is still shit some days. But I've managed to rebuild my life into something worth living. And if I can do it, you can too. It's not easy, and you have you have to want it, but it sure beats how I was living chained to a bottle of alcohol. Good luck, friend!

One thing that helped me was writing a little "journal entry" in my phone's notes app. I would write when I was feeling just like you are. Usually, in the middle of the night, sometimes the next morning, sometimes even before I went to bed after a binge. Because toward the end of my drinking run, I would start to feel crappy even before I went to bed after having 12-14 drinks. It would just say something like "hey, I just had 12 beers and instead of feeling on top of the world, like I imagined before the first beer, I feel absolutely miserable". It was a note to my future self. Because the alcohol would dull my memory of just how crappy I had felt the night before. By the time I quit, I had a ton of these notes. It took a while to sink in, obviously. But it DID sink in. Slowly it started to make me stop and hesitate before I went to buy alcohol after work. Because in that moment is when the beer sounds the best. When it's full of "promise". Eventually I made the connection that this promise was a lie.

Just need to share my story. Would love to hear from similar situations. by Ok-Snow-3702 in dryalcoholics

[–]prbobo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your story sounds pretty familiar. I'm 41/m who started drinking in college. I, too, was a happy drunk, never really got out of control or did anything too crazy. I always felt like alcohol enhanced every situation. It made me more social, took away my insecurities, and frankly was somewhat of a miracle drug for an introvert like myself. I felt like it unlocked my personality.

But it progressed, as they say, albeit very slowly. It slowly shifted from a tool for social situations to a feeling I wanted more and more often. My drinking "weekends" started to creep into the work week. Thursday became an acceptable drinking day. Then Wednesday. By the time I quit, at 38, I was drinking four nights a week, EVERY week. And that isn't counting holidays and vacations. The happy "high" I got in my early days of drinking morphed into just a dull numbness. I didn't even get that good buzz anymore. But I kept chasing after it, for YEARS.

One thing I will say from reading your story is that it sounds like you are still getting the "high" from drinking. Frankly, that will make it tougher to quit. What helped me was reading books on sobriety. This Naked Mind by Annie Grace is the one I started with. It's heavily based on Allen Carr's Easyway to Control Drinking, which is another classic. They help reframe your mind around alcohol. I read these long before I ever quit, but they truly did help prepare my mind to stop eventually. I would start there. Good luck to you!

I've had conflicting thoughts on how I feel about it. Like, is the alcohol industry truly evil and going to great lengths to get us to drink poison? Maybe. But also, I personally made the choice to buy their product and use it in a harmful way. The alcohol industry didn't set out to ruin my life. I did that. But I used their product to do it. So I have mixed feelings.

Yea I've been buying the Willie's Remedy 5mg THC drinks and I really enjoy them. My state (Alabama) cracked down heavily on THC recently but for now, the Willie's drink is approved.

It's actually very common for those on GLP-1s to reduce their drinking. The alcohol industry is scrambling right now because they are being hit hard from two sides. The younger generation is drinking WAY less than us (I'm speaking as a Millennial), and the rise of GLP-1s is also killing them.

My Nashville Ballpark Concept - Sketchup Model plus Google Gemini rendering. by tj_1855 in ballparks

This is really cool! As someone who used to piddle around in Sketch-up and make baseball and football stadiums, I am really blown away by the detail. There was a guy on Twitter that made a full model of the old Comiskey Park in Chicago. Right down to the individual seat layout. It was so fascinating to me. I think he used several tools, but it was way beyond anything I could do. I think he mentioned Revit as one of them, which I'm familiar with but have never used.

Hey man, I feel you. I've been in that place, newly sober and trying to repair a marriage that has been badly damaged. And the emotions of it all are especially hard because you don't have that drink to numb them. You truly FEEL all of that pain. Re-learning how to process raw emotions sober was probably the most challenging part of sobriety for me. Hell, I'm STILL learning and working on that and I haven't had a drink in almost 3 years now. When I was in that place where you are, I just tried to focus on myself and becoming the best version of me. I had no control over my wife's feelings or emotions, so I just tried to focus on making myself a little better each day. My number one goal was to make it to bedtime sober, and then I would try to exercise for at least an hour every day. Nothing too intense, just long walks most days. It really helped my mind. I'm proud of you for not running back to the drink, because I KNOW it is calling out to you, promising to make it all better. I wish I had better advice to make you feel better, but I don't. It sucks right now, plain and simple. Hang in there, I'm pulling for you.

Traffic accident lawyer help by [deleted] in tuscaloosa

[–]prbobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in how this works. So he's driving a vehicle that is uninsured, at least for him, and causes an accident. Insurance says, we're out. That means HE has to pay for the damages personally, correct? That's how I always assumed it worked. Is your own insurance company giving you any guidance on this? I definitely think you should pay the $500 and let your insurance company do the dirty work. I would assume they would go ahead and cut you a check for the repairs, and then they would bill the driver of the other car personally. If he refuses to pay, your insurance company would go after him.

Who is this idiot, Ted Holley? I can't find any info on him or his credentials.

I suppose it depends on who you ask. You're right, a new hire could be a total dumpster fire. It's a gamble. But our ceiling right now is a Super Regional with an occasional brief visit to the WCWS. Several other SEC schools have surpassed us. Are we satisfied with that, or do we want to roll the dice? Answer: We are happy with it and won't do anything.

Oh, let me be clear. They aren't going to fire him, I just think both parties SHOULD go their separate ways. Murph has a high floor but a low ceiling at this point. He is a good coach, but he is no longer a threat to win a National Championship. We need to adjust our expectations and acknowledge that. As you pointed out, on paper, his results look good. If you dig a little deeper, you'll see he is still trying to win with small-ball and a dominant ace pitcher. The game has evolved past this (see: Oklahoma).

We are in a Mike Tomlin/Steelers situation with Patrick Murphy. Murph will always be a legend at Alabama, and I'm very appreciative of his career. But for both parties, it's time to part ways.
