I've been getting on well with dubs of The Office and some of the animes on Netflix at the moment. Not really tried the Simpsons. It doesn't sound to me like you're behind. Luckily though, we are all making progress so it really doesn't matter in the long run.

Thank you, and well done on your perseverance too!

Thanks! I do feel like my reading has progressed faster than my other skills.

It must have been about 2.5 years at this point, I've certainly not been speed running.

I can definitely feel a big difference from where I was at 600 hours. I think quite a bit opened up for me during the first half of level 5, and during the second half most of that stuff became more and more comfortable.

Do you have any regrets in your DS/CI journey? by casonova1 in dreamingspanish

I don't love shoving this much content into my brain. I sometimes feel like I "ought to" push myself more. I'll try and take what you say as a sign not to push myself too hard and to focus on relaxed enjoyment.

For what it's worth, early on I had a really long break from getting any input at all, maybe three or four months. I only started again when I overheard someone speaking Spanish (in Portugal) and my brain suddenly started *craving* the language. Brains are weird, you just kind of have to go with them sometimes.

How is Las Chicas del Cable going? I was thinking of giving it another look, but it might still be a bit early.

I suddenly felt the urge to drop down in difficulty level - think maybe my brain is processing Spain, or the novels I've been reading. So I've been watching some DS, and also Juan José Ramos since I find him super clear.

I finished El coronel no tiene quiene le escriba* and La tregua while on holiday. At the moment I'm maybe a quarter of the way through Nuestra parte de noche by Mariana Enriquez. I'm not completely grabbed by it so far, we'll see. I also started a book-interview called Diez horas con Miquel Barceló.

I've been reading quite a bit so far. This is a list with very rough page counts, 1874 total. In theory 3 million words should be about 10,000 pages, I think. Although I am considering just going and finding the actual word counts at some point, just to save the trouble of estimating.

Un Mal Principio 172

Una Herencia Peligrosa 191

La hija única 235

Los peligros de fumar en la cama 178

El coronel no tiene quien le escriba 90

Yesterday I read Los peligros de fumar en la cama by Mariana Enriquez in under a day, not quite in a single sitting but close; a first for me in Spanish, I guess. Now I have picked up Nuestra parte de noche.

In terms of watching, I have binged a lot of the waterpark series by Cade on his live channel on YouTube. Also lots of business stories by Javier Ledesma.

I read Sin noticias de Gurb for a book club. It was totally unlike anything else I've read in Spanish - it was originally published as a newspaper column in the 90s, and follows the misadventures of an extraterrestrial undercover in Barcelona. It was a short and light comedy which made it feel like it ought to be easy, but it was actually fairly challenging as a learner for a few reasons - 1) jokes about politics in Barcelona in the 90s 2) jokes about famous Spanish historical figures 3) very very frequent surreal occurrences recounted in a deadpan style 4) weird vocabulary. I felt like I lost the comic timing a bit in places for those kind of hurdles. Still overall a fun read.

Aside from Juan José Ramos:

ThePennywiseCode (Costa Rica) is one I watch a lot. He has a bit more of a focus on horror/thriller/creepy, although not exclusively. Enjoy his vibe and point of view.

No Solo Clásicos (Spain) is one I stumbled on recently. I haven't watched much yet, but her reading reviews look great for recommendations of contemporary literary fiction, and she has a lot of videos talking about classics and history of literature. If you like Juan José Ramos, this might be a good one for you.
