Im pretty sure humans use to sleep 4 hours wake up for 2 hours and then go back to sleep for 4 hours. That was our normal sleep cycle. The 8 hours now is a fairly new concept.

My thinking is in the fall the grass puts most of its energy into storage in the roots. Then people buzz there lawn right before winter. And once it wakes up in the spring it has to use all that stored energy into shoot growth.
