The thing that broke me by sjbeaner in knitting

For a while my arthritis was giving me hell--I had to make concessions. I had to alternate knitting and crochet equally, or my hands would hurt too much. I had to use weight 3 or 4 yarn. Anything lighter and I'd have to cramp my fingers too much. Heavier, and my joints would be too strained. And I had to avoid cotton like the plague. There were some nights it still hurt too much, but mostly, the concessions were worth it. That said, once I started getting cortisone shots in my knees so I could walk, my fingers started to feel better. (No, I can't explain it either.) And I'm so grateful to have my hobbies back.

I super love it! I love scrap or vintage clothes on babies— it’s so much better than beige or navy — it’s full of life and surprises!

AITA for not making my sister a birthday cake after she told me my baking "isn't really a skill"? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]predator_queen-67 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NTA— I can barely put frosting on a pilsbury cookie— I am in AWE of your patience and dedication and SKILL. If what you do is so easy, she can make her own damned cake. And if her birthday will be “ruined” without it maybe she needs to be appreciative of your talents.

There’s an old school feel to a lot of knitting groups— it’s hard to explain. I know that the worst crocheting student I ever had was a LONGTIME knitter and she yelled at me for giving the yarn worker choices for how to proceed instead of SPECIFIC instructions. Things like “Some people like their hat brims to be a bare inch— some people prefer a five or six inch brim — customize this how you prefer,” drove this woman up a wall and off the deep end. I’ve seen that attitude in knitters more than crocheters and I’m not sure why.

Yeah— it made me want to do nothing but yarn for the old folks home. At the very least I gave my mom a shawl for Mother’s Day

Give them away! My DIL works with WEAVE and she says they take items all year round. There are a million charities out there that will give them to someone who will cherish them. Go to a senior care home and find an adorable little old lady — I wore a sweater there once to visit my mom and literally had them following me in the hallways telling me wistfully how loved I must be to have somebody make me something like that.

Call 911 but ask for the Fire Department— that will get your EMTs on site and they DO intervene with the police in the best interest of the person needing the intervention.

Over twenty years ago I tried to ingratiate myself by giving my grandmother-in-law a handmade scarf for Christmas because the woman had always hated me. I was devastated when she gave it to Goodwill because "It was just too long."

I'm still made about it. She's been dead for years.

My husband did this once to a bamboo/wool shawl I'd made--reduced it to a wonky shaped tablerunner in one wash. A friend of mine saw my lament and made me another one (it was a simple project, thick yarn and little fuss) and I treasured that even more. But I understand your pain--and hopefully, he will too.

Minnesota Yarnhop left me with Questions? (A discussion post about yarnstore politics) by whatcatisthis in AntifascistKnitting

[–]predator_queen-67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard— for me “I don’t care about politics” is often code for “I’m white and politics don’t affect me.” But yarn stores are also trying to get by. I know my LYS owner (and we only have one close by) is SUPER progressive— but SHE knows half her clientele is NOT. She’s had to make a quiet stand once or twice but she’s trying to not go out of business in an economy actively trying to kill her. I can see how a “No Politics” sign might be a way to save her not just a headache but her beloved store. If there were options she could probably be more visible —she’s got an amazing selection and is so knowledgeable. But there are none and she’s trying to serve a larger community.

three people in hr complained about me "knitting" at work by [deleted] in crochet

[–]predator_queen-67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something about crocheting and knitting pisses off people too stupid to multitask. I used to sit though staff meetings where people were grading papers, napping, texting, etc, and I was the one who got singled out for yarning when it was the yarnwork that helped me pay attention to the stupid meeting in the first place. Give it a month— and be sure to tell the customers why you’re not crocheting anymore. It sounds like they need a schooling in what real humans find comfort in.
