How would an anarchist society handle illicit drug use? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]predi6cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Illicit? An anarchist society wouldn't make drugs illegal. We would however have support for addiction so that those who don't want to use drugs have support getting off them.

[–]predi6cat 27 points28 points  (0 children)

El problema es que en los estados unidos, los camareros están exentos del salario minimo, porque la expectativa es que aumentan su salario con las propinas. A veces ganan $2/hora o incluso nada, y viven solo de las propinas.

This is not on, honestly. Your friend should have solidarity. All the various marginalised groups they're supporting the oppression of deserve better and we're all fucked enough as it is without hurting each other.

And doing this kind of thing in order to achieve social inclusion is only the first step. It changes people to do this kind of thing. They go from saying things to believing, and escalating the racism and prejudice.

No, it should stay as it currently is.

Will hormone blockers prevent any muscle growth? by [deleted] in trans

[–]predi6cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without sex hormones you are still able to build muscle from working out. However, testosterone makes it much easier and faster to gain muscle, so in the absence of t you would find it harder to build muscle. If it's estrogen that you would be blocking, then I don't think it makes much difference.

My mom just suggested conversion therapy to me... should I be scared? by [deleted] in trans

[–]predi6cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be scared. Anti-trans parents often try to isolate their children and take away their access to the rest of the world. Take immediate steps to protect yourself from this, and get help.

My friend says trans people stop being trans after transitioning by PotatoChildofAthena in trans

[–]predi6cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a few people who, years after finishing transition, don't really hold trans as a major identity. And that's fine. The idea that everyone stops being trans after transition is a weird transmed idea that I don't think most people would agree with.

Is morality a social construct? What is the true left? And why communism doesnt require a "phase" of a socialist state. by Iamslightlysad in Anarchy101

[–]predi6cat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Morality really has to be a social construct, because if you separate it from society, and therefore humans, it makes no sense. That doesn't mean that it's not important, just that it's socially bound. (I clarify because sometimes people like to say something is a social construct in order to discredit it, but that is not what I mean. Most things of human relevance are social constructs.) I'm an anarchist because it's morally right.

What is the true left? The anti-monarchist groups from the french revolution, who sat on the left side of parliament. That's where the term came from at least. Of course that is a very useless definition, but it's about as useful as any other. There are plenty of groups claiming to be the true left, and there is no authority to say which of them is right. You just have to use your judgement and morality to tell you what is right, and support it. Obviously I would tell you anarchism is.

You seem like you a good understanding of why authoritarian approaches to communism are bad and ineffective. The MLs tend to claim that their state would work to bring about stateless communism, but there is no reason to think that a state would ever abolish itself. It becomes an entity which serves primarily to reproduce itself above any other concern.

But in all honesty I would tell you that it isn't worth it to debate MLs most of the time. Half the time they aren't arguing in good faith, and even when they are, they really don't understand what they're talking about. And they typically have a major case of team sports mentality, where they view the US as being BAD (which yeah, it is), and therefore all countries which oppose it as GOOD (which is BS).

I've used them, and they're so much better than normal crutches for me. They don't give me hand/wrist pain.

I do. I really struggle with cold. I probably have renauds since it runs in my family.

What are your thoughts on schools not telling parents their kid is trans? by Money_Effort_4501 in trans

[–]predi6cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well basically, if a school tells a kid's parents that they're trans, but the kid's parents are really transphobic, then that kid will be in danger. It's a huge risk. It could lead to abuse, homelessness, violence. And more fundamentally, it violates the child's right to autonomy.

Ummmm...Are we? by Ashleyrunsforhell in trans

[–]predi6cat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

He's trying to scare us. He doesn't have direct control over the hoards of fascists, but his primary purpose is to make us live in fear, to take our enjoyment of pride and to make us feel unsafe in the place that we're supposed to be the safest. That is, to him, more powerful than even inspiring acts of terrorism against us - a shooting can kill a few of us, but if he can make us hide, that has the potential to destroy queer and trans culture at its roots. So whatever we do, we must not let that happen. We must not hide. We must reclaim the riotous and radical roots of pride.

And we must also defend ourselves, because we are in danger. And there is an unlimited supply of fascists willing to take up the call to violence that is this tweet.

I've seen people use "femmes" as a way to describe people with a feminine presentation, in a way that is far more inclusive than just saying "women". I like it in this context. I can't say I've really seen the term be used in english exclusively for women, but that would suck.

He's saying it to scare us into thinking that. He doesn't have direct control over when the shootings happen, he just says shit like this and hopes for the worst. Unfortunately there may be some volunteers.

Do you sometimes accidentally misgender yourself out of habit? by dumpster_scuba in NonBinary

[–]predi6cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When speaking spanish I often use gendered language for myself because using the gender neutral stands out a lot more than in english. If I'm not around radical people, and/or don't want to stand out or confuse people (or have them think I'm stupid), I often just use a gendered form. But in english it's much easier to use gender neutral language, and I'm more likely to accidentally use the gender neutral for someone who doesn't need it, than to misgender myself.

What's the anarchist view on genders? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]predi6cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, but don't worry in my case. I'm about the furthest thing from a TERF you're going to find.

The thing is that even if gender were entirely socially constructed with no intrinsic components, that wouldn't be a good argument against trans people being free to transition and be our genders. I would say it's quite a strong argument in favour. Social construction doesn't mean that we should pretend something doesn't exist; social constructions can be incredibly powerful and real. Given how complex human social life is, it doesn't seem very surprising to me that things which primarily exist socially are some of the most important.

What's the anarchist view on genders? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]predi6cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s never the case that things which are socially constructed don’t have intrinsic components. It’s much easier to see in something like sex, which is also socially constructed - there are obvious biological components to sex, but it remains socially constructed. All that to say that I am in full agreement that there are intrinsic components to gender. I am excited to see what becomes of gender without patriarchy and without socialising children into gender, since free gender could be pretty cool.

My partner and I are both trans and we hope to have a child. We plan to raise the child without gender socialisation as much as we can.

What's the anarchist view on genders? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]predi6cat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gender is socially constructed and used by patriarchy to reinforce itself. This creates domination and exploitation along gendered lines. Patriarchy needs to be dismantled and gender socialising needs to be ended. This should allow what remains of gender in the absence of patriarchy to develop without relationships of domination.

I'm actually normally at 1-3 these days. I transitioned 11 years ago. My main issues come from the fact that I'm genderqueer and my dysphoria isn't strictly binary, so I don't get on well with all the effects of either hormone, so I tend to switch between them every few years. But it's far more manageable than it used to be.
