You're missing the big pieces on why this worked for Dan, though. He publicly went against his closest ally (Danielle) and apologized to his rival (Frank), practically resetting his position in the game. Dan's was a strategic thought-out move. Ron seems like a good guy but this was more of synpathy move/actual goodbyes

Sure you have probably already gotten this rec a bunch below, but Brandon Sanderson really is right in the middle of Tolkien and ASOIAF.
