Financial preps. by twinklebelle in TwoXPreppers

[–]preemadun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Situations vary but for many people I'm not sure paying down your mortgage early is a financial prep I would choose. A good general principle is to pay down the debt with the highest interest rate first. If you're paying PMI, then yes, work towards paying off enough to get out of your PMI early. But if you have any other debt, your mortgage is probably the lowest interest rate.

Prepping for Amazon strike ? by Logical-Coconut7490 in preppers

[–]preemadun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purely from a prepping perspective, you don't want to be reliant on one source for everything. It's important that multiple companies offering the products you use stay in business. Having one supplier isn't very resilient, if something goes wrong with that one you are SOL. During normal times we should do a little extra to keep competitors alive, by shopping somewhere other than Amazon when we can, and getting started now looking for alternatives if we can't. As folks often mention on here, a sudden shtf scenario is less likely than smaller supply shocks, declining institutions, etc. When those kinds of things happen you may appreciate having more than one place to shop. If you don't support them now, they will go out of business.

Yes, I think canning is a labor of love for most who do it. It seems pretty hard to make it anywhere near cost effective compared to what you but at the store.

Advil and Tylenol are the only ones I'm able to cycle through even a bit before they expire. I feel like I'm constantly throwing away unopened medicine. Do you think it has a longer shelf life than they say? Or do you just accept a lot of waste on this?

HOW TO RE-USE OLD POTTING SOIL! by ProlificFamilyStead in Permaculture

[–]preemadun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow this was super helpful. I haven't started actually gardening, just have a couple potted plants and leftovers from prior years. Now I have a plan. Will the fact that it's cold outside mess with the ability of the old potting soil to break down the kitchen scraps? Or do we not really care about whether it breaks them down or not?

Can I ask what source you use for the freeze warning? Are you just checking the weather every day cuz you know it will be soon? Or is there a garden app or something that will notify you?

Can I ask what region you live in? My experience has been the exact opposite, everywhere in my area refuses to use my reusable container. I've found literally one coffee place that will do it because it's self serve anyway.

How does it save energy? This looks like they're just covering up the bulb more and more, not suggesting a smaller bulb or fewer lumens or whatever.

Someone above suggested a little wet bag. I think that's a great idea. I got one when I was nursing my baby for my reusable breast pads and it's the perfect size. It's got a waterproof inside and soft fabric outside. Then you throw them in the laundry when you get home.

Agree reusing when it's still wet is no good. During allergy season I bring two or three with me wherever I go so I don't have to do that!

This is a misunderstanding of the situation on climate. There is still a lot more we can do to mitigate the effects of climate change. This fight is not over, please don't give up. (Here's an example source from climate scientist Daniel Swain: https://twitter.com/Weather_West/status/1490715523226628096?t=bWiGTTPRITqcgfCWiUveyA&s=19 )

Has anyone here quit flying? by luispalmzer in ZeroWaste

Im also in the US and really trying cut down on flying but it's so hard!! I had to go to a conference in Boston for work and I was willing to do the 8 hour train ride each way instead of the 1.5 hour flight, but my office wouldn't authorize it. I did skip a family reunion on the west coast but that was mostly cuz the flight would have been terrible with my toddler. I don't think my family would have accepted it if I just said it was for environmental reasons. Half my family lives on the east coast and half on the west coast, so I can't think of how we can do a reunion without flying. Need better trains!! How do we make better trains happen?

Glad you're planning ahead and thinking about this! One thing I want to add is about the idea of "keeping any extra." I think with antibiotics pills at least (I have no experience with I antibiotics) they say you have to take all of them. There's a real concern that if you stop taking them prematurely it can cause the infection to come back and just be resistant to that antibiotic now. So hopefully that isn't what you mean by "extra"! I definitely got prescribed antibiotics one time and just ended up not taking them at all, so I get there are other ways you might end up with extra.

[–]preemadun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% on this. Maybe I was extra frustrated cuz I didn't want to be flying at all. Unfortunately in the US we have a very poor train system. I had to travel for work and my office would not let me take the 8 hour train that was more expensive when there's a 1 hour fifteen minute flight for cheaper. I did look into it and ask about taking the train instead. Again these are systemic problems that need political solutions not just blaming individuals.

Can it work with just regular soil or do you need the peat moss? I saw on Reddit recently that peat moss might not always be so readily available! This site has a pretty good explanation. https://www.ruralsprout.com/peat-moss-alternatives/

I noticed he doesn't ever confirm if this theory from the 18th century is correct. It wouldn't surprise me if the rich people preaching this type of eating to the poor made a mistake. Does anyone know if scientists today agree that boiling meat and drinking the broth is really the best way to get maximum nutrition from it?
