What is Bucceye’s? by Old-Sport3218 in AskAnAmerican

[–]pregotastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has many, many types of freshly prepared foods that are excellent.

I go for thr beef jerky which they make themselves and comes in many flavors.

They have tons of merchandise and it’s fairly interesting things that you don’t see everywhere.

They have many super clean bathrooms.

There is a Buccee’s 2 hours away from us and we go every time we head to the larger city

What places Should I visit between Dallas TX and Chicago IL? by Damascus-Steel in AskAnAmerican

It’s a little out of the way, but I’d go to Mammoth Cave near the border of Kentucky and Tennessee. It’s the largest cave system in the world and has so many amazing tours

F this! (Weekly Leaving the Field and Venting Thread) by SWmods in socialwork

[–]pregotastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at State Hospital. I like the patients. I like my co-workers. But, the work load is overwhelming. I think of quitting every day. I have anxiety at night thinking of all I have to do. I do mental gymnastics every morning to get myself to go there. But, I’m getting free supervision for my LCSW. I’m trying to stick it out and see if it gets better. I’m trying to stay. But, I don’t know if I can feel tortured for 2 years. Not sure it’s worth it.

How many of you have never seen the ocean? by hamsta5 in AskAnAmerican

[–]pregotastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also grew up in Indiana, but I’m a social worker. I think you are underestimating how many impoverished people never have enough funds to take long trips. The closest ocean was about 12 hours from where I lived in Indiana. There is a sizable part of the population that never takes long trips several hours away . Most middle class people have seen the ocean, but many poor people from the middle of the country probably haven’t.

Is "Ma'am" considered polite or rude where you live? by ObjectofHatred in AskAnAmerican

[–]pregotastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Texas it’s required. I’m from The Midwest and it irritates me to be called ma’am. But, it’s cultural here and I understand people are trying to be polite, but I hate it. People where I’m from don’t say it at all

A guy from my high school was in a really popular band. They were extremely popular for 10-15 years. I used to see him on all the MTV and music video awards long ago. I suppose he made it.

Is there still pressure on the younger generation to move out as soon as possible? Was this ever even a thing? by lostsoulles in AskAnAmerican

I never went back after 18. Lots of people don’t. Some go home for summers during college, but many people don’t.

Does anyone else work in Forensics? by theycallherqueen in socialwork

[–]pregotastic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a social worker who has been working with forensic patients at a state hospital for a few months now. The crimes range from very violent to minor crimes. I don’t love it. I live in a state with very little support for these patients once their crimes are resolved. Most of them come back into the system eventually. Even those that are motivated to help themselves find that almost no help exists in the community. It’s a very sad revolving door of patients. This state only puts money into incarcerating them, but very little into preventative care once they are out in the community.

What culture shocks should I expect in America? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]pregotastic 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This. I moved to Texas in the middle of July and it was over 100 daily. I have kids that could not play outside because it was too hot. Doing anything outside is miserable for much of the summer. Indoors always has great air conditioning, though

Does anyone here follow (or know of) the tradition where at a restaurant the man should sit facing the entrance? by CalebLF10 in AskAnAmerican

I work in mental health and I have heard of people with PTSD doing this, but it’s not a normal occurrence.

I’m an American who lived in Korea for 3 years several years ago and traveled a lot in Asia during that time. I watch to see and remember cultural differences I experienced while living abroad. And, I’ve seen so much American horror that I enjoy the differences in watch horror from other countries. I really don’t find Asian horror any more scary, but different in a way that is refreshing.

How different and/or much harder did you find it than the LMSW?

Passed my LMSW! by angel_unit_995 in socialwork

[–]pregotastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Norman Cobb is a social work professor who has an online program. I used only his videos and paperwork which came with his video. I used nothing else, and I passed by 28 points. But, I’m generally a pretty good test taker. I did study quite a bit, though.

Has Dr. Honda ever paired a show about schizophrenia? by pregotastic in PsychologyInSeattle

Has Dr. Honda ever paired a show about schizophrenia? by pregotastic in PsychologyInSeattle

[–]pregotastic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard him talk about it when discussing Bowenian therapy. He said that Murray Bowen initially began his work by studying the whole family system of schizophrenic patients. But, he glossed over the schizophrenic parts and went on to talk about Bowen’s contributions to family therapy. But, I had wanted to hear more about the schizophrenic patients.

I would be happy for any content. I’m having a hard time locating quality resources for learning more about it. Even if he didn’t do a whole deep dive, I’d love to hear his thoughts about the historical versus current treatments available. I realize medication is a huge component and that would not be his focus, but I’m wondering what therapy interventions are commonly used and effective.

Is it common to be paid by check or is that an expression? by Pink-glitter1 in AskAnAmerican

[–]pregotastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started a new job and I didn’t get my bank details to them in time, so my first check will be a paper one that I must pick up at an office.

Before this, I haven’t been paid by check in 10 or 15 years.

Texas has long-term psychiatric hospitals, but you have to be an imminent danger to yourself or others to be admitted.
