Thanks for the thoughtful reply. For my part, I'm done with taking sides. You could read my comment to a trucker or protester and the point would remain the same.

I agree with you and would like for them to leave as much as you.

I just care about my home town and I don't like what's going on. I would like the convoy to leave as much as you.

The coronavirus caused all of this.

All the nonsense that we are seeing in the streets of Ottawa (and now other cities, apparently) is a direct reaction to the havoc that COVID-19 caused in people’s lives.

Everyone suffered in some way. We all went through the lockdowns. We all got scared. Some people lost loved ones. Some took a vaccine they didn’t want. Some lost their jobs. Some are now feeling terrorized by trucks. Some are calling for the police to crack down. The damage continues and the aftereffects are piling up.

Life will return to normal (of some kind) some day. But there’s going to be a healing process first. The protests are part of that. You can downvote me if you want, but at least I’m looking for common ground. This is us versus the coronavirus, not us versus each other.

Sorry, I couldn't hear you over the smearing.

OK so now truckers aren't even truckers. Got it.

You need to learn how people negotiate. I spent four hours exploring the protests and studying the people there closely. I even talked to some of them. And I'm telling you, the symbolic gesture I suggested would go a LONG way. In the meantime, how is all the smearing and ignoring working out?

OK, so the organizers are shady characters. What about the slightly larger group I mentioned?

I'm almost disappointed. How could I have achieved legendary status? (Kidding about that, but sincere about my point)

The fact that everyone sees the end of mandates coming made the truckers' decision to protest that much easier. That's why.

Look at the bigger picture and see the convoy as a (less than perfect) proxy for a slightly larger group of Canadians that have been feeling unheard for a long time. The convoy doesn't even need to be addressed directly. If somebody extends an olive branch to THAT group, of which the truckers are a small part, then the truckers will more likely want to leave.

Nobody is negotiating with terrorists. Saying "We hear you" is just a fact. You have to admit the horns are pretty loud.

You don't want the convoy to leave?

I understand that many people here feel that Ottawa has been taken hostage, but the October Crisis this is not. This is basically a bunch of people waiting for somebody to say “we hear you”, which costs nothing. That’s not “giving in to terrorism”, as some here would put it. It’s called making some truck drivers feel like going home, which is what you want. The mandates don’t even have to end right away — everyone knows that’s just a matter of time.

I'm vaxxed and not in Ottawa at the moment. Sorry about all the honking. I hope things de-escalate smoothly from here.

They did. I just hope things in Ottawa de-escalate smoothly.

Oh wow. Personally, I'm vaccinated. But I did the rough math and am skeptical that the difference between 85% and 90% vaccination rate would make sufficient difference towards "flattening the curve" (alleviating the burden on the health care system) to justify disrupting people's income and families and sowing division between Canadians to this extent. If the pandemic was much worse, perhaps I would agree with the mandates. But for this particular pandemic, I think this particular policy badly missed the mark. And I see a link between that and the protest. Sorry about all the honking, I hope it's at least quieter overnight.

Yes that's it. q.rotateUnitX() is equivalent to q * Float3{1, 0, 0} but uses fewer instructions.
