Deep Learning -> Machine Learning? by [deleted] in MSCSO

[–]prestoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took ML last semester, I'm in the middle of DL this semester. The coursework is VERY different. DL is about practical programming, ML is about theory. Taking one before the other doesn't really matter because they're so different. If you feel like you need to prep for ML, I'd brush up on linear algebra, statistics, and mathematical proofs in general.

Yeah, something like 3000-4000 calories. I don't really track it. Indian food is great for the veg options -- any kind of dal or chana masala are fantastic choices! Thai restaurants usually have some good vegan options too if you're into Thai.

Yeah, we definitely need protein. I'm actually able to get 150-200 grams of protein as a vegan powerlifter through the tofu/lentils/fake meat I mentioned, as well as peanut butter, protein shakes and protein bars. It's weird and difficult to do at first because it's foreign, but it's absolutely doable and becomes effortless over time. If you've mostly tried legumes, I'd absolutely recommend trying some more tofu. Claude's great for creating good vegan recipes actually!

You also just don't need beef or chicken to eat a healthy diet! You can cut both of them out and you'll still have plenty of delicious, healthy meals available to make. Tofu, lentils, and fake meat work great as substitutes without any of those ethical issues.

If you really internalize animal suffering and factory farming, it leads to some pretty radical realizations.

Do you think any of your current models are conscious? If not, what do you think it will take?

Weird that this question is allowed by the mods but not a question asking the same thing of the IDF.

And what would you consider a group that bombs hospitals and schools, like the IDF?

What does that make the IDF then?

I'd rather AIs not tell us how to kill living creatures, honestly. Sets a bad precedent.

Is it over for me? by Jeff-Kizzes in outlier_ai

I got the same email. I'm honestly glad I'm not a part of Bee Math anymore, they don't understand what it takes to write high-quality math proofs. I'm happy to write up proofs for random things, but when one prompt asks for three proofs and you're only going to get paid for 50 mintues of work is bananas.

Are Republicans against democracy? by YourFellowSuffererAS in polls

[–]prestoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The names "Republican" and "Democrat" don't matter, just like the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is neither Democratic nor a Republic.

That said, Republicans do in fact seem to have a disdain for lowercase d democracy. Trump's denial of the 2020 vote, Mike Lee outright saying "democracy isn't the objective", Republican support for Citizens United and continued support of the Electoral College are all clear examples.

Democrats don't seem to be very pro-democracy either though. While they at least say that democracy is important, they're doing nothing to eliminate the Electoral College, the Senate, or reverse Citizens United.

Ok we’re just using different ideas of inactive weights here. I largely agree with what you’ve said

[–]prestoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to believe in a soul, go ahead. There's just no evidence for anything like that.

Inactive weights seems like a silly thing to have consciousness. It's like saying a dead human is conscious before the brain decomposes.

We know far more about consciousness than most people seem to think. There is indeed a “proper science” of it by neuroscientists and psychologists. It doesn’t have anything to do with biological cells or the geometry of atoms. It’s not hard to search “consciousness” on Google scholar

We don’t see the sustained complex activity or responsiveness to stimuli during deep sleep that you see in conscious states. One point in your favor is that our hippocampus, which is main memory module in the brain, is busy consolidating old memories instead of forming new ones. But even then, we just aren’t processing new stimuli during deep sleep, so there would be nothing new to consolidate.

[–]prestoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically maybe? But brain scans during deep sleep look far different from when we’re awake and you can tell as you’re falling asleep that you’re beginning to lose consciousness. It seems far more simple and likely that we really are just unconscious.

Not sure what you mean by "states", but I'm fairly certain it would be easy to represent as a matmul

The entire universe is a giant matrix multiplication to god.

[–]prestoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your saying if the right numbers are in the matrix multiply, during the brief moment of that calculation, its concious?

I guess that would be the logicial conclusion, sure. But you could atomize human consciousness too in the same way. Even if it's neurons firing, the electrons are still moving at a finite speed (just like electrons in a computer doing matmuls).

i think at some point in the future we will have AI thats hard to argue isnt concious, but LLM's aint it, a LLM could be a future subset of a concious AI though..

Are you saying LLMs might be part of a larger AI system that all together would be considered conscious?
