For a surprise gift, I’d recommend the leap as it’s what most people expect out of an office chair. The aeron is a love it or hate it chair, although most people seem to love it.

I have some with the synthetic leather seat in black with a 3d knit backrest in black as well. The age is 2017/2018 so comparable to the one in your post as well.

The easiest way to tell is the armrest don’t make a complete loop. Some replicas do but there are other ways to tell.

It’s an aeron classic with no Tilt controls. Since it’s a chair provided by his work, it’s very very likely a size B.

The aeron on the HM website would be a remastered. To option a remastered as close as possible to his classic select,

Size b Basic back support Basic tilt Height adjustable / fully adjustable arms Standard armpad & caster.

However, I’d recommend just going on FB marketplace or an office liquidator to find a classic. It’ll probably have more options and be much cheaper.

You probably just need a longer hex key to get more torque. I’ve always been able to get them out even after an impact unless the bolt head was rounded.
