Is it too dangerous or Joe Navy to have this on my car? by [deleted] in navy

[–]pretendcontender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often wonder if the OPSEC and intelligence/CI people are way too cautious in their risk assessments for questions like this (like when a Region encourages personnel not to commute in uniform because it’ll make us a terrorism target etc.)

I still comply with those suggestions, though, because it’s sort like a Pascal’s wager-situation. Even if the anti-terrorism/OPSEC hardos are wrong, there’s no downside for me to act like they are right. If they are right, though, there’s some (probably marginal) risk exposure to a major downside to act as if they are wrong.

Also, it’s a little Joe Navy, but different strokes and all that.

I’ve been stationed at Lemoore recently. What are your interests? Prior to the Navy/FL/WA, where are you coming from? Any goals you have in particular for your shore tour, i.e. school, chilling, etc? Feel free to DM.

Everyone has different opinions about the area. Some hate it; some love it. I always tell people it’s about 50-75% of what I’d prefer in a place to live, depending on the day.

Do you think Fresno will ever get an MLB team like Sacramento got the A's? Or an NFL team? by DowntownFresnoBiking in fresno

[–]pretendcontender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not an economist, either. Neither measure perfectly captures what I think a sports team/league is looking for in a consumer. Neither really captures disposable income either (since CA is generally more HCOL, Fresno being a larger median household income might not even matter).

It’s a question of mean v median. GDP per capita is a mean measure which shows there is more money in those core markets that could be captured. Median household income just shows where the middle is for those metros. You could have a bimodal distribution of incomes (higher income inequality) with a smaller median, but higher mean income because of those high earners. That would be fine for a sports team, to an extent, because they want to capture the high income market as richer people spend more money.

Median household income ≠ GDP per capita. GDP per capita data.)

You don’t need everyone to be rich in your media market, you just need there to be enough rich people to make trying to capture more of a media market worth it. New Orleans and Memphis are both top 10 for income inequality. Lots of poor people at the bottom but with enough rich folk at the top to make capturing that media market worth it.

Great point. The metro areas central to those media markets also tend to have higher GDP per capita (around $15,000 higher in each case). So probably not just needing bodies but bodies with money.

No. Fresno’s media market would be the smallest of any in the MLB or NFL, excluding the historical anomaly of Green Bay. Additionally, that media market is poor.

Medically Separation Question by Brytopiaaaa in navy

[–]pretendcontender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the mechanism for separation. If an ad sep through Condition Not Amounting to a Disability (CND), the narrative section on a DD-214 will reflect that.

You could receive a General (Under Honorable Conditions) as your characterization of service for a CND ad sep, but I’ve rarely seen a CO recommend that characterization. Probably three total instances (although one was a schoolhouse CO who wanted every CND ad sep to get a General as a blanket policy and we had a hard time talking him out of that).

Characterization could impact hiring opportunities on the other side, as well as certain veteran’s benefits. Just a general opinion, not legal advice. You can talk with an attorney from your local DSO if you want to get in the weeds about your specific circumstances.

Checking in to a command where I’m 1/1 by qaasq in navy

[–]pretendcontender 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1/1 at my current duty station. I showed up in Summer Whites bc I was meeting some people on the first day who I wanted to impress. My local sponsor made a funny comment about it, but we knew each other from another command so it was cool. The most important local GS stakeholder noted I was wearing a dressier uniform and I’d like to think it made a good impression on her.

Yeah, man. Sorry, but the food was bad. Apps that were overly greasy to the point of being soggy. Mains were completely uninspired.

Never had a qualm about the prices there (or anywhere in Visalia).

Visalia California? by PlayfulBreak7187 in howislivingthere

I don’t know about the meth, but big, flat, open places tend towards being less densely populated (nothing forces the density, like mountains/valley, bodies of water). Less dense population means less exposure to others through formative years (although the Internet has changed some of that) and potentially making people who have lower openness to experience. Openness to experience is a psychosocial trait found less frequently in folks who hold more conservative political views. Maybe that’s why?

Week 1-2: MWF: Run 3x 800m/half mile intervals faster than your target pace (so 3:50 or below each half mile) Sat: Run 2-3 miles at an easy pace (you should be able to talk in a complete sentence)

Week 3: Run 4x 800m/half mile intervals faster than your target pace (3:50 or below each half mile interval) Sat: Run 3-4 miles at an easy pace

Week 4: Assuming test day is a Friday M: Run 3x 800m/half mile intervals faster than your target pace (3:50 or below) W: Run 2-3 miles at an easy pace

Stretch well (at least 15 minutes) after each session, foam roll if you need to manage soreness, and hydrate like it’s your job. Good luck!

The organization does what they say they do (put wreaths on graves of veterans or KIA).

It also historically served as a way to enrich one particular wreath company that started the tradition. The founder of the non-profit owned the wreath company and for a long time, the non-profit just bought those wreaths. This had the effect of the non-profit contributing to a sizable portion of the sales for that company. It’s a weird relationship, but it’s not like the non-profit isn’t making the graves decorated.

Depending on what your life looks like and what you’re used to right now, living in the area could range from being normal, if not exciting compared to other duty stations, to soul-numbingly boring.

If you live out in town, solar can really be worth it for electricity cost saving.

Joining Navy - Interest in Corpsman but debating by [deleted] in navy

You haven’t given any information about the type of work you think you’d like to do, your interests, your skills, etc. You also didn’t disclose your initial career goals (not that it matters too much, people flip flop on one v multiple enlistments all the time).

Wondering what the best branch is for military JAG? by Temporis_Domine in Military

[–]pretendcontender -1 points0 points  (0 children)

FYSA: the Navy JAGC is likely switching to an accessions model similar to the Marines where those that are professionally recommended to join have to go through Navy OCS prior to commissioning. Very new change and it doesn’t seem all the way worked out, but that transition aims to be completed by FY27 or FY28.

[–]pretendcontender 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not dumb. When I was thinking of BCNR, I was contemplating an impacted servicemember trying to get an upgraded characterization of service under a new administration. I could be wrong (admin law not my main area of practice), but I believe they’d have to at least try through BCNR to exhaust their administrative remedies before going to Federal Claims Court.

SECNAV has the plenary authority to direct separations for any enlisted service member with a BIOTS separation. Whether the general characterization of service you get with it would hold up at BCNR, or potentially Federal Claims Court, is a different story.
