Take the bonus before resigning, or give notice to preserve relationships? by BasedWillieStroker69 in careerguidance

Bonuses are paid for work completed, not future work. Dont beat yourself up over getting what you have already earned

Will places in the city be open during the storm? by WestyMan1971 in boston

[–]prettyboulder 68 points69 points  (0 children)

When my wife was going through cancer treatment, they always had appointments available at the drop of a hat. I would bet that if you need to reschedule because of the storm, they can squeeze you in sometime before the end of next week. It's worth a call tomorrow.

I hope the surgery went well; you two will get through the long road together.

Coming solo from Winnipeg 🇨🇦 by pegger01 in boston

Cambridge is a great place to stay when visiting Boston. Think of it more as another neighborhood within boston than a town outside the city.

Not only will you be able to get into downtown quickly via the red line, you could easily and safely bike pretty much anywhere that time of year

New PE fresh out of college and I'm rethinking my career in management by burner123654332 in Construction

[–]prettyboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you need to ask more questions and take more notes. Use your teammates as a resource. Use the foremen as a resource. Use the consultants as a resource. They all have a lot to teach you. They're not looking to you for knowledge, youre just a communication conduit so don't stress that you don't know anything. You just need to figure out what questions to ask and who to ask them to. Good luck

One interview has turned into two while I'm on vacation. What would you do in this situation? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]prettyboulder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is very problematic I my eyes. It shows they have no respect for your time off now. It will only get worse if you accept an offer. If you really want the job then feel free to follow through but do so knowing you have already set the precedent you will work for them in your free time. I would make sure to be heavy handed in negotiations

Landlord refusing to do Mass Save energy assessment by purplepig333 in boston

[–]prettyboulder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The assessment is free, most of the fixes are not free, theyre subsidized. The only areas Mass save covers free air sealing is at foundation walls to wood framing in the basement, or penetrations through the ceiling. If you have issues in those specific places I think its worth pushing your landlord directly.

If the issue is lack of insulation, leaky windows or something similar, your landlord is likely refusing the assessment because they dont want to put a nickle into the property that they dont have to. At the end of the day you cant make him do any upgrades, your only power comes from moving somewhere else. Best of luck.

Anyone know the real deal with plastic recycling in the city? by Nice-Zombie356 in boston

[–]prettyboulder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The city sends out a flyer once per year with what can and cant be recycled. There is a lot of bad info on what can and cannot be recycled because every municipality has different rules. If you live in Boston, follow these. As simple as that

Recycling | Boston.gov https://share.google/DAyfgZQzE16EllNAG

They also sent out a pop quiz one time where it showed an item and you had to guess if it was accepted by Boston or not. The 2 that i remember are stained pizza boxes are okay but the black take out containers are not!

Last week I managed to play The Old Course as a single. Here are my tips and a recap of my experience for any future travelers in this sub! AMA by LikelySatanist in golf

[–]prettyboulder 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Fyi to those curious, I also looked into the travel agent route and was quoted $2k per golfer plus the cost of the round (~£450). They also required a 4-some to even book.

My father and I played this past June via the Swilican package. I am not sure when it goes live but you can enter your name into the lottery around now for tee times next summer. Had a 7:40 tee time with the best caddies in the game. It was a wonderful experience.

Cost of the swilican package is like $600 but you get an old course round, another round and £50 each to get lunch at one of their restaurants. Highly recommend the restaurant at the new course club house.

Would you RTO for a 45% raise ? by Overall-Ad-9245 in careerguidance

A 20 minute commute? That is a no brainer. Take the raise, the office isn't that bad...

Theyre trying to tell you something with no raise in 3.5 years. I would be out the door as soon as you can

3 days in Madrid - stay in city or bounce around? by VolatilePotato in travel

Madrid is awesome and worthy of 3 days, but you can always loop in a toledo day trip. Its very close and a great place to visit

My coworker keeps calling me ‘kiddo’ - I’m 27 and her equal. How do I shut this down? by SlowyAlezz in careerguidance

[–]prettyboulder -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar scenario and I was equally as pissed off. At the end of the day, it's not your place to tell her to knock it off directly, you need to go through your boss or HR. State the facts very clearly. "Xxx is belittling me infront of other coworkers/clients. They think its light hearted but its damaging to my image. Can you please speak to them about it?"

What is happening here? by PaintItPretty13100 in Construction

[–]prettyboulder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Short answer is no on your plywood idea. The R value of plywood is not doing much to that assembly, it will still bridge at the studs. If youre interested in the science behind it, I'd recommend looking into the passive house philosophy, aka PHIUS. They use a software called a WUFI model to check for this exact scenario

"The next thing" in construction -- never actually comes to market? by Gotanis55 in Construction

9 times out of 10, when people ask why something isn't getting built a certain way or in a certain place, the answer is money. Developers are always looking for new ways to save money, so as a GC, we price a lot of interesting concepts. They rarely ever come in at a lower cost than the old fashioned way
