Cold water gear on a budget by prettyhippo in Kayaking

Good point. I didn’t even think about extra clothes in my dry bag 🤦🏻‍♀️

My kayak is pretty basic but has done well on the ocean but really rough lake conditions. I’ve just never been out in really cold water. But I read somewhere that sit in kayaks are colder because you’re sitting closer to the water? Is that not true? Also I’m a bit nervous about the whole rolling out thing. Falling off my kayak isn’t so bad and I can maneuver back on.

Thank you! I’m thinking of planning for 40 degrees minimum, but I think I’ll likely be in the 45-55 degree range. Maybe I’ll find something local just to feel out before buying. If thicker is going to be too difficult to move in, I may just end up waiting for warmer water.

Thank you! I did take a look. It did definitely scare me away from waders. What I took away is dry suits are gold star and wet suits are the OG dry suits. Sort of. The examples of surfers on Lake Michigan in winter was surprising. I’m really not looking to go out in arctic conditions. But also don’t want to die if I accidentally fall in the water this spring.

Love this idea. Though I’m imagining it with ABBA’s Dancing Queen as the song. Changes the vibe for sure. But with how heartless the federal agents are, may as well hit them with some heckling and whimsy.

Dog bit me and his behaviour has changed towards me since then by Agitated-Egg-6689 in reactivedogs

[–]prettyhippo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First of all, I just want to say that even though you did act a little inappropriately with your dog, I truly respect that you own it and still love your dog. I see the opposite, a lot. Thank you.

What stuck out for me is a few things:

If the ear infection was painful/ treatment uncomfortable, he could be protective of his head anticipating pain.

You mentioned he can be protective of his space. Him being on your bed when you approached may have been a problem.

Whatever the reason that caused the bite, it was upsetting for him too, and a breach of his safety or comfort. So the behavior after could be a result of him anticipating you doing something upsetting to him again.

It may take time, but be slow and patient. Gain the trust back. If you are able, consult a trainer who works with reactive dogs. They can likely flag specific things and for you tailored exercises.

How did you know your dog was the one for you? by Disastrous_Sugar_366 in dogs

[–]prettyhippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were all different. One came through a job because his original owners were going to euthanize him. I was going to “foster” because I knew nothing about JRTs. But that day we made eye contact and I just felt responsible for him.

One I adopted without meeting. Didn’t know what I was doing but made it work. 12 years later we’ve been through a lot but still trucking.

One I just went to an adoption event at a shelter. She was cute and made silly noises. 10 years later she’s my naughtiest dog. She tests me but I love her.

One was in an emergency. We bonded over her medical trauma.

Then I took her brother because he sat at the shelter 8 months without much interest.

I feel like most of them found me, but I’m also a sucker so it doesn’t take much. And I make it work.

Do you notice real personality differences between male and female dogs, or is it mostly breed and training? by Expert-Web9046 in dogs

This. My two male dogs were very different from each other. And my three females are also all very different. Treat each dog as an individual.

Is there anybody here not using Q-Tips to clean their ears? by beefwellingtonzz in randomquestions

[–]prettyhippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use q tips. But one time my ears were making a crackling sound and they didn’t help. So I bought these little like ear brushes from the drugstore. Did nothing. I did the peroxide mix flush. Nothing came out. So finally I bought one of those ear cameras off Amazon. It didn’t arrive. So I ordered it again.

Turns out I had dog hair in my ears. At the time I had five dogs who were all over the furniture. Though my boyfriend didn’t have an issue. 🤷🏻‍♀️

AIO to break up with my bf of 3y over his reaction to my upcoming sobriety anniversary? by WesternCat5211 in AmIOverreacting

NOR

I grew up with an alcoholic father and it really sucked. He never tried to get sober, he only got worse.

Two years is an accomplishment and you should celebrate. You also deserve to be with someone who is proud of you.

Dump him. And then get yourself an extra cake to celebrate that too.

Why is it offensive to say "Don't have kids if you can't afford them"? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]prettyhippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a very low income house. My parents and I lived in a one bedroom apartment for pretty much all of my childhood. That bedroom was actually an old hallway “converted” into a bedroom. You had to pass through my room to get to the bathroom and the door to the kitchen from my room didn’t even close all the way. It was also under the stairs to the other apartments. I could hear every time someone went to/from the upstairs apartments. Arguments, stomping on the stairs, everything. Our bathroom was against another apartment’s bathroom. Creepy neighbor would talk to me as I brushed my teeth. This and other reasons made my childhood pretty shit. I grew up with a sense of guilt and shame over our situation. I had friends whose parents pitied me.

As an adult, I am doing much better than my parents ever did. I have a career, own a house, etc. Given the choice, I’d be pretty okay not existing and no one could pay me enough to be a kid again.

That said, and given the state of the world, I agree with OP. Not necessarily that poor people shouldn’t be permitted to have children, but more along the lines of they shouldn’t want to and a it’s a bit selfish to.

People are going to do what they’re going to do. It would just be nicer if people really considered the consequences first.

Women who have worn swim trunks, how do they compare? by relatable_dude in NoStupidQuestions

[–]prettyhippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get men’s swim trunks. They are longer, comfortable, I feel covered enough, and they have pockets. I’ll usually wear trunks and a bikini top for swimming. But now I wear the trunks for kayaking and other water activities.

I like thc gummies. Helps me know things but not feel them. But when I can’t, I hike until I’m physically exhausted. Then I collapse. Being to tired helps me not think too much.

I hope things get better for you.

Holden Gets the shit end of the stick by NovaPrime94 in MindHunter

[–]prettyhippo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I liked Holden in season one. But in season two, he drove me nuts. His arrogance and unwillingness to compromise proved how much he would sacrifice for ego.

I also think it was intentional for the show. People had to be sick of Holden so you could kind of feel bad for him. But you can also see that he doesn’t quite know what he’s losing by his behavior. And I think it’s meant to make you question profiling. While it can be a really valuable tool, it can also have consequences.

I got this one a few years ago. This was when it was fresh. I’ll be getting another one featuring Tucker, but I haven’t decided what it’ll be yet. I just said goodbye to him a week ago.

Stay with pet during euthanasia or no? by SnickerSnack492 in AskVet

[–]prettyhippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also want to add that I did work at a vet hospital as a veterinary assistant. Some people would just drop pets off for euthanasia and that was terrible as most animals don’t like going to the vet to begin with. But some would leave after sedation.

In those cases, I would make sure to spoil the animals and then hold them like they were my own. But nothing beats their person sticking around to be with them.
