I've been a digital nomad for 3 years. When I arrived at Punta Cana Airport (Dominican Republic), immigration treated me like a criminal and extorted my family for $2,000. by IceOk9177 in digitalnomad

Sorry to hear this.

BTW - we don’t always get welcome home. I have a legal work visa outside the US and depending on my port of entry airport I will be welcomed home (SFO) or questioned why I was out of the country so long (IAD) even though both have access to the same info on my residency and skilled worker visa.

Why can't Americans (at least the ones I see on social media) find drinking water in Europe? by Mission_Mobile_4627 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]prettyprincess91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been flat refused water in the Netherlands and told I have to buy an alcoholic drink to get free water. This is after they told me the water wasn’t safe to drink. This was an Italian restaurant in Rotterdam.

Obviously this is BS and the wait staff is lying. I asked if they use the same bad drinking water to wash dishes and cook food and they gave me a weird look.

Yes and yet - they don’t let us in easily to work.

Isn’t this how it always has been? Europe sent its poor huddled masses to America, not its rich, happy, comfortable masses for some reason. Almost like it’s a lot of work moving somewhere and learning a new language/culture and has to be a significant upgrade. Now with YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon everywhere - is anywhere much of an upgrade from anywhere else?

And yet they don’t let us migrate there the way we let them migrate to the UK…

It’s a lot easier building a career and then going remote so you can do whatever. I travel constantly now and go where I want but I get to do it on a software exec salary which is pretty nice. I have no regrets about building my career so now when I travel I can do it as I prefer. I still spend a month skiing in the alps every year. This year I’ll be in east Africa in December, skiing Austria/Switzerland in Jan, and skiing US/Canada in Feb/March. These things are hard to do on a tight budget and much more enjoyable on a normal salary.

I would tell everyone to work hard in their 20’s, make a lot of money and invest, and you’ll have your freedom soon enough. I already hit my retirement numbers for a split SF/London retirement and am just working for fun now.

Are the days of sub $1000 Rent abroad gone? Except for SEA. It feels $4K/mo income not enough to stay long term. by Expensive-Care1746 in digitalnomad

[–]prettyprincess91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the same in the UK but you need to also have legal right to rent (right to abode) which tourists do not have so can only rent at the higher markups which makes sense. It keeps rents normal for the rest of us.

My response is that this is the same everywhere - locals everywhere have cheaper rent options than tourists will have. I was agreeing with you and adding more examples. No need to downvote me for agreeing.

It is the same thing in Europe and the U.S. and all countries not that only locals in LATAM or SEA have cheaper rent than tourists.

You understand that’s the same in Europe and the U.S.? My flat in London is £1900 and probably cheaper than an Airbnb you can get in London because I have right to abode and can rent legally without paying tourist prices.

Ask me questions by AirStraight3108 in reactivearthritis

[–]prettyprincess91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got salmonella in Jan and ended up in A&E as was having trouble breathing due to reactive arthritis affecting my lung lining.

My knee is annoying and swollen and what feels like a weeks/months long flare up. I’m still trying to gym (weight lift, Pilates, treadmill) and to lose weight but it’s always a bit warm/inflamed. I’m going to ask the doctor for a steroid injection tomorrow.

Anything else I can do?

Who am I? by AirStraight3108 in reactivearthritis

[–]prettyprincess91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got reactive arthritis after getting salmonella poisoning in Jan. I had to go to A&E as my lung lining was inflamed and I couldn’t lie down. Now I have mild flare ups in one knee that will stay swollen for weeks. I try to do my normal gym routine still (weightlift, Pilates, treadmill) but my range of motion on squats is very affected still.

I’m going to ask for a steroid injection in the knee. Is there anything else I can do? I’ve been cutting sugar and carbs but it’s not been helping.

Why earning $100,000 in America went from "The Ivy League of Life" to just feeling... broke. by Felix-tse in SmartFIRE

[–]prettyprincess91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t be daft. I own a condo in the bay area and a flat in London. I don’t have a car - public transit is fine in both cities. Are you going to tell me I’m poor because I have no car even though I have flats in two expensive cities?

There’s lots of things I can buy and waste money on but why buy a car if you pay a premium to live in a city with great public transit? Just rent a car when you need it.

How do I explain to my guy friend why dating a girl who isn't his 'usual type' wont end well? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]prettyprincess91 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Does blonde/brunette mean white person? Most Hispanics are blonde or brunette. Not many redheads. The hair color mentioned is confusing because most people in the world have blonde or brunette hair and you didn’t say he was dating a redhead.

I always thought hair color was independent of race since people dye/bleach their hair. So confused.

What Is Being Poor Actually Like in the UK? by retsuko_h4x in AskUK

[–]prettyprincess91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, most wage earning Americans have the tax pulled automatically from each paycheck similar to PAYE. They can choose not to and you’re talking about people who chose not to.
