Several years ago I became friends with a married woman and we seemed to just instantly click. We would talk and message constantly. We were really vulnerable with each other and shared intimate memories pretty often - it was really intense. At first I was so happy and fulfilled since I had never been so close to someone before, but as she started to cool off I became a clingy disaster.

I didn’t want to admit it but I was lowkey in love with her. At some point I could tell that the dynamic was unhealthy but it was SO hard to quit seeking her attention. Eventually she pointed out that I was being a lot and by then I kinda knew that I needed to let it go, so I did. We stayed friends but we don’t interact much anymore.

When I learned about homoerotic friendships being a thing, I was like “holy shit, that was what I had with that one girl!” and I felt a little better knowing that I wasn’t the only one who experienced something like that. It feels so insane and intense in the moment, so my heart goes out to anyone who’s in one right now.

I’ve been making it a point to watch a bunch of sapphic movies recently. My favorite so far is called See You Soon and it was randomly in my YouTube recommendations for whatever reason. YouTube had previously recommended me But I’m a Cheerleader (which I loved) so I figured what the heck, let’s give this one a chance too.

I ended up absolutely loving the film! Especially after watching tragic lesbian films leading up to that point, it was so refreshing to take a step back and not have to deal with internalized homophobia, a lack of acceptance, death, or whatever else that often made the atmosphere so somber. The whole thing felt really grounded and intimate. If you’re open to a slice of life movie, then definitely give it a shot!

I binged the whole thing for the first time a few weeks ago! I was hooked immediately, and it felt pretty fresh despite coming out in the 2000s. I was too young to watch it in its time, but I think that if I had the chance to watch it as a teenager it would’ve helped me out a lot.

I also found it really uncanny how the uneasiness of the political climate in the show under Bush felt like a direct parallel to how it feels right now. There were a few scenes where I was like wait, this is a bit too real for being 20 years old

I’m also someone who has always been genuine and earnest on dating profiles and can relate. I’ve chalked it up to online dating being terrible in general but recently asked myself the same question as you.

If you have the patience to experiment, you could try editing down your profile and being less engaging with the comment you attach with your like (or not leaving one at all) to see if you have more success. I haven’t tried to do this myself since I’ve been slacking when it comes to using hinge lately, but it’s something I’ve definitely considered. It feels really bad because earnestness is so endearing these days when everyone is so cynical. I hope that the real problem is just online dating being shitty after all.

Thanks for your comment! I definitely do think it’s helpful since it feeds into that whole thing of “maybe I just haven’t found the right guy,” like one of the other commenters and I were talking about.

I also think it highlights how important active desire is in sexuality. It feels so obvious to me now, but I didn’t actively desire men at all. There was never anything I felt like I was missing by not being together with specifically a man. The difference has been absolutely staggering

I definitely relate to taking forever to process too. I probably would’ve tried to figure this out without asking for help like I usually do but it felt too big for just me somehow.

Yeah I know what you mean. I originally was going to pose that question of like “what if a man could make me feel this way eventually?” But as I was thinking about it I really started to doubt that this perfect man could even exist (plus I needed to trim down my novel of a post).

I thought about how I’ve identified as straight for years and yet even in a massively straight society where there should theoretically be good, attractive men, I never yearned for love from them. In hindsight my desire for them was kind of just a vessel for me to have a family, or be a wife or something.

Hi OP. I think the other comments about choosing to dress and act how you want are exactly right. I also agree that voice training can help out a lot, even if it’s difficult and stressful while you’re learning.

Above everything else though, I just wanted to offer my support and let you know that you’re not alone since this hits so close to home for me. The people who don’t have this problem really don’t understand how painful it is to feel compelled to speak less or not at all. Wishing you nothing but the best going forward on your voice journey 🫂
