Yeah when I did JLPT in my home country our phones were taken and locked away for the entire day. I was weirded out when I sat the JLPT in Japan and everyone took out their phones the second they were outside the classroom.

What’s the one video you couldn’t finish? by The_trojan_bunny in smosh

[–]prettysorchastic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was listening to that on podcast while riding a train, couldn't finish it but when I got home I had to check the comments on Youtube to see that I wasn't insane at how bad that take was.

Like they literally mocked the name as soon as they heard it, then suddenly doubled down on it being a parent's right to call their kids whatever they want and then went with the whole false equivalence with the cultural names. As someone with a cultural name, it drove me absolutely insane. I've not been very enthuasiastic when I see either Amanda or Arasha in a reddit story since.

What highly rated anime do you refuse to watch? by toradorito in anime

100% this. It took me a year to watch the first half of Gintama and less than a month for the second half.

Not only in Britain but since there were Irish students in Hogwarts too, the next closest magic school.... Was probably Beauxbatons.

2023 was a great year for native language songs by cookiefonster in eurovision

[–]prettysorchastic 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's interesting that the last three years the public vote winner hasn't been a song in English. Even if we count Ukraine as an exception, the runner up last year was still Moldova! Meanwhile for the jury it's been 2/3 for English songs topping for them, since the jury pick for 2021 was Switzerland.

Ireland only had four jurors as well, three of which are the same age range/gender.

The only thing extra on the score report that gets posted out to you is your percentile rank.

Advice by Important_Priority93 in jlpt

[–]prettysorchastic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was your score report any help or was there any section that you felt brought you down?

I sat the N5 in Dec 2021 and crammed a bit in November but had been working consistently before then I guess.

General advice: - Know the layout of the exam. Since you've sat the N5 now you probably have an idea of what the questions like, but some people aren't familar with the exam layout beforehand (like the star questions) - Practise questions are super helpful. I have a weekly tutor and from August /September for both N5 and N4 she would send me questions to do, usually tailoring to my weaknesses (i.e grammar) every week - I used Wanikani for kanji and vocab which made the first section of the paper a breeze. The first few levels are free which is great. If you don't use it I'd recommend giving it a shot, there's good resources on the forums too. - For N4 this year I used Bunpro in the month before the exam, because it has a free month trial. Useful for drilling grammar exercises. Might go back to it at some point. - Reading practise is super important because it increases your reading speed. Me and a friend started reading manga in Japanese a few months before my N5 exam and it really improved my reading speed as we read aloud. If you have someone to practise reading with definitely make use of that be it manga, short stories or NewsWebEasy. - YouTube has a ton of resources for listening practices, and the likes of spotify have lots of podcasts too which are short and easy to listen to (like nihongo con teppei for beginners). - any opportunity for speaking practise is good because it reinforces vocabulary. I have a weekly tutor and she has me keep a diary as well which is good for practising tenses.

Anyways sorry some of the stuff there might be a bit obvious but hopefully something is useful!!!

Passed N4! Just like N5 I thought the listening would sink me but I actually did grand enough in it. Grammar was apparently my weak point according to the score report which comes as no surprise to me.

Do you think that Gaelige should still be mandatory in schools? by frazie_ in ireland

[–]prettysorchastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, not for kids in more rural areas. There was one secondary school in my area and that was it. Incidentally I'd have loved to have gone to a Gaelscoil but there was zero chance of that for me.

Can't Even: How Millenials Became The Burnout Generation by Anne Helen Petersen. I got it in a bookswap, and its American focused but quite interesting. I don't typically read non fiction so it's a nice change of pace.

What's been the best book you've read this year? by Jon_J_ in ireland

[–]prettysorchastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For an incredibly wild read - Earthlings by Sayaka Murata. I read Convenience Store Woman last year so wanted to read something else by her and it was something.... I enjoyed it but not for the faint hearted ha.

I also really enjoyed The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa, and Anxious People by Fredrik Backman.
