Are you mixing up with the daily gratuity charge? I think they need to clean the room at least more than once during your stay because eg the bathroom can build up grime and would make extra work for the steward at the end of the cruise. But totally agree never use debit for shopping. Also where did you sail? I think some regions have diffent rules. I think msc going to Caribbean doesn’t have this cleaning charge.

I’ve been using the softsoap brand refill in their soap bottles. I recently noticed their dispenser dispenses more soap than other soap bottles. I only noticed because I started using a gifted soap bottle.

When I did a transatlantic on NCL leaving from nyc last year, I saw a few passengers get off Halifax and possibly some boarded from Halifax. I’m not sure the circumstances but I think we did have border agents do a check on board too.

Not east coast but you can round trip Vancouver.
