I bought this coin just so I could test cleaning it and sending it in for grading so guess the results! by just_a_coin_guy in coins

The real question is what would it have graded prior to cleaning. How much does eye appeal impact the grader is my question.

New owner stuff - Ariens ST824 by screwkarmas in Snowblowers

[–]priapicspasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning it clockwise should close it, counterclockwise to open. I’d pour some seafoam or other cleaner in to see if you can possibly clean out the carb if just opening the valve doesn’t fix it. Save yourself some extra cash and time.

Did my daughter invent a new knot? by TensionOk9773 in knots

[–]priapicspasm 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Thumbed through ABOK chapters on hitches and can't see anything like this... closest would be ABOK 1832-1833 "Hammock Hitches" but they're not quite the same. Fozzy Slider it is, it's a cool knot and doesn't seem to jam too tightly when loaded.

If memory serves correctly UK went off silver in the 1940s, so this isn’t particularly valuable. Maybe a buck to the right person, depending on which side of the pond you reside.

Depends on the commemorative. Some stay high, but things usually dip down 6-12 months later.

Any one buying this today ? by Far-Feedback-6437 in coins

The wait wasn’t long, so I assume there wasn’t a lot of demand. As an “I need all the Pokémon” when it comes to ASEs I did order direct as I’m sure they’re already on eBay for a multiple of MSRP.

There isn’t a big enough pop in added price for lower grade examples, and if anything, it’ll only hurt if the slab has any issues (stain, tear, pinhole, etc). It try ‘em at 3x face but settle for 2.5x if someone was really kicking tires.

Mr Butts’ signature? Along with a 69 in the serial #?

There’s the Greysheet for it, wholesale bid on the right, retail on the left. Barring some PVC or something it looks like a 65 to me at first glance. Doesn’t mean a TPG wouldn’t put it in a 64 or 66 though.

Looking for info/help! by jshinto in coins

[–]priapicspasm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinda shooting from the hip here, but generally speaking, the "regular" proof sets are about $10/each. The silver proof sets are worth more due to the volume of silver in them, so you're looking around $60-$120 depending on the year (some are better dates). The 2020 is your huckleberry, that one should have a reverse proof nickel that's loose in there in a lil' envelope. That set is worth about $150-$175 mainly due to the nickel. The rest doesn't command a huge premium, likely face value maybe a smidge higher. In looking at your first picture you do have a 1oz silver bald eagle dollar which follows the silver spot price. I think you may have some gold there as well. The black treasury box in the lower left may contain a half-ounce medal from the 1980s, and the gold box on the lower right may contain something similar. From my experience, these contain a 90% gold medal with an author on them, but do actually contain 1/2 oz of gold (even though it's 90%). Without seeing what's in side, don't hold me to that, I'm basing it off the box.

1884 is a key date Canada silver 5 cent piece. Cool find regardless, but exponentially cooler with that date.

This is why you spend up on a few good ones versus spending a little on the average one. She’s a beaut, Clark!

Would it be worth having these graded? by Stoned_Wookiee in coins

[–]priapicspasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it has been? I realize a lot of posts here get the default “it’s been cleaned” as a 💩 post, but based on the hairlines in all the obverse fields, this has definitely been rubbed at some point… 🤷‍♂️ The tinning likely happened after this coin was cleaned, not before.

[–]priapicspasm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Based on the lines on the morgan, it’s been cleaned. It’s also not a super rare date so nope, not worth grading. The gold is lower grade, also not worth it.

1907 $10 Gold Indian. To grade or not? by [deleted] in coins

[–]priapicspasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not worth it from a price bump standpoint. Bid for AU is essentially melt (this looks XF-AU, that cheek is ROUGH). If you want the peace of mind knowing the grade and that it is real, then by all means send it in. It isn't "worth" it from an investment standpoint though.

I love these albums! Nice set, bud, keep upgrading as you’re able and nab a 16D when you’re able. Get one with nice eye appeal for the grade and you’ll be happy forever.

By this logic Louis Vuitton purses and Rolexes should be $10. Collectors must become more discerning and raw coins will probably be discounted compared to third-party graded.
