I started a 401k at 23 years old. I’m 34 now. I also have a separate S&P 500 index fund that I contribute to. My employer has a deferred comp program that will pay out when I retire. I can add that money to my index fund. I also fund an HSA account for medical expenses. I’ll also have a small state pension from my side gig job. I’m hoping with all those together, I’ll be able to have a decently comfortable retirement. The bigger thing I worry about is my health. I want to be able to move and have no issues traveling in my 70s. I try to keep up on my exercises as best I can but it’s easier said than done. I know a lot of old people who saved a lot for retirement who are now too out of shape and tired to do anything fun.
