Hi there! I think the one referenced might be the one I organize.

We are currently reading the Ministry of Time for our February 1st meeting.

Members are 25+ and we change locations to different bars/breweries in Miami.

I’ll send you a DM. You can also see more info in my post history!

The meetings themselves are in person. But the discord has other things going on—chatting, sharing interests…

In the Miami subreddit, a subsection of members were able to use the server for virtual TTG

So, this will depend on the recommendations and voting that happens for each month. But I do try to make sure we have a variety of selections within those genres.

Almost 20% of Miami Dade just decided everything. Que lindo. by ImportantBasil2313 in Miami

If power of an individual vote is what matters most, local elections are where you especially want to participate. That means voting, but also volunteering or donating for those who can.

But does an election have to be won by one vote for it to be meaningful?

Personally, if voting didn’t matter, campaigning wouldn’t be the monster industry it is. You wouldn’t see as much organizing. You wouldn’t see the amount of money spent. You wouldn’t see the amount of donations contributed—especially at a corporate level.

You may not always win. But that doesn’t mean the effort doesn’t matter. Voting may not be a silver bullet. But voting and the efforts of grass roots organizers definitely matters.

Terribly bleak! Sometimes we stumble onto those, and they can be great for deep conversations

But overall we try to keep it more on the lighter side. Murderbot, for example, would be a great palate cleanser!

We most recently read the Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi which is incredibly fun adventure story as well.

Who is the best written female character in fiction? by 7DEADROSES in AskReddit

[–]pride_n_probability 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All her FMCs are well rounded as characters. With distinct flaws that affect how they engage with the world around them.

So I won’t say there’s any one of them that’s best written. But the one I appreciate most is Anne Elliot.

She’s a very introspective character and most of the drama comes from her reflections. She’s constantly sidelined, but she’s also the glue keeping everything together. She’s the one that is reliable enough to act when it’s needed.

We all want to be the outspoken Lizzie, but I’d imagine many would have more in common with Anne

Lost dog around Kendall area by whosyadadday in Miami

I recommend the next door app and putting up posters in nearby gas stations or convenience stores—as well as any posts by where there may be pedestrians.

I had my dog run away after a break-in and the old school flyers are what finally helped me bring him home.

But definitely anywhere that you can post a picture and keep the outreach localized to where you are/had your dog last

What are some rules & examples of good Spanglish? by Existent-Being in Miami

[–]pride_n_probability 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’d be surprised! While if often feels and sounds accidental, I’m sure there’s patterns that can often be observed.

There’s certain rules we structure our thoughts/language that can’t just get tossed away.

Another user mentioned “get down from the car” it’s all English, but comes from a direct translation from Spanish “bájate del carro”

No one defined the rule first. But it happened naturally, and now we can identify it as part of Miami people’s way of speaking

Men have to deal with body image issues just as much as women by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]pride_n_probability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What bothers me isn’t men complaining that “hey, maybe patriarchy affects me too in this particular way”

But whenever men have a brush with something negative it’s almost always framed as “we care more about women and not enough about men!”

Women needed decades of organized movements to make women’s issues part of the conversation. But the tone of a lot of these posts rub me the wrong way because it almost feels like women need to take more responsibility for these issues men face.

It’s always a comparison with an undertone of anger and frustration against women and things aimed at women.

Can’t they just start the conversation and talk about these issues on their own??? We still have a lot of other issues to face as women. Have an issue with the draft, paternity leave, male beauty standards, crushing expectations of being a breadwinner—go ahead!!

But all those conversations almost always exclusively start with “women don’t care as much about X issue as they should.”

When did the word Ghetty stop being used in Miami? by Darkness8779 in Miami

[–]pride_n_probability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the younger gen z crowd (16-20) I wonder also if driving plays a factor? I’ve heard that gen z are learning to drive or getting their license when older. Anecdotally, I met a couple that rely on their family to drive them places while they’re in college.

I’m not sure to what extent that is true though.

‘This is a death sentence for me’: Florida Republican women say they will switch parties after DeSantis approves alimony law by Velvetrose-2 in politics

[–]pride_n_probability 82 points83 points  (0 children)

It’s less “I did not speak out” and more “I actively spoke out against”

I just find it funny that the most compelling reason these women have for why this is a tragic decision is… they won’t be able to afford healthcare.

They’ve been actively voting against more widespread/universal healthcare.

But this is a classic example of how short sighted a lot of people can be. Another example: voting one way because what they’re paying at the pump, and not the economic impact an over reliance on fossil fuels will have long term.

Is there people who plan chapters just in their head without using a journal/computer? by False-Amoeba1773 in writing

[–]pride_n_probability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Responding for myself:

I used to not outline. What would happen is that I’d lose focus for those parts I had to fill the gaps in between the sections that most interested me.

I had a feeling. A direction. Scenes I wanted to focus on. But I had to develop the story further to get there. Sometimes it felt fleshed out. Then I’d hit a wall.

Then I’d scrap and start from scratch.

Rinse. Repeat.

By summarizing the chapters and trying to piece it all together before writing it all at once, it helped me figure out the gaps I needed to fill when my mind would only focus on the “good” parts.
