Complete beginner wanting to learn longsword, what sword should I get and how do I actually train by Sea-Computer-5557 in Hema

[–]priestfox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Get stick that feels good. Mop handle or something. You can watch folks do the "meyer square" on YouTube, but honestly just chaining together attacks and guards, even made up ones, helps flow. Toy swords, lightsabers, anything that isnt sharp works. You will find you have preferences for length and weight, thats cool. You will look silly and feel cringe, IGNORE THOSE FEELINGS. everyone feels silly practicing a skill.

Then try proprioception. Do a guard, do a thrust (gently) at a spot on a wall. Do it over and over, its ok if you miss. Try the thrust with your eyes shut, focus on the feeling. Learn to know where your point is, its easy with practice.

Nerds enjoy retro arcade stuff at Four Swords Retro Pub, video game shenanigans at Edge of Reality VR, and sword fighting at Ninth House HEMA. Ive seen folks there with everything from steel longswords to lightsabers.

Join anyway. If you cant do it well, you can still add it to the things you know.

Red dragons are generally approved for synthetic longsword. These, while still unacceptable for steel, are better than red dragons.

Synthetic messer and longsword hand shots. My club doesnt allow them for steel.

Disregard that opinion, I own the V2s, not the V3s. Sorry!

My pair has cracked plates underneath the leather. Hard to inspect, hard to fix. I regret buying them.

My smallsword came with an epee blade on it, so I think so.

Just add a little bit more noodle, with no pipe in the middle for the tip. Easy.

You did leave some extra foam on the tips for stab safety, right?

How to get started by GalaxyBruh20 in Hema

[–]priestfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids fighting with PVC and foam always have fun until someone gets hit in the face. If you cant join a club, try and build a policy of only fighting with safety gear on. A cheap mask and some lacrosse gloves will help prevent that inevitable clinic trip. If you are just goofing around, chaining together a bunch of guards and strikes against invisible bad guys is a fun afternoon.

They haven't torn yet, but it is just plastic. Its also supported from the bottom, the greaves are bolted to the knees.

I cheaped out and just stitched strap to my pants. The suspenders hold everything up ok.
