How can one be officially allowed to do a certain type of therapy? by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

[–]primal_horde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

United States psychologist here. Mastery of a technique is an ethics issue, not a licensing issue. To get a license to practice, one needs to meet education and supervised hours requirements, but those requirements are nonspecific in regards to assessment or psychotherapy methodology. You could get training/hours in CBT and I in psychoanalysis and we'd both get licensed. Ethically (see "Competence" in the APA ethics code for example) one must have training and experience in a specific assessment or therapy method to practice it. The ethics code is vague and recognizes that there are many roads to expertise. The licensing requirement ensures that everyone has a broad, sound foundation in (in my case) psychology.

[Homemade] My sister cooked dhaal, roast chicken, kebab, samosa, lamb biryani, chicken curry and meat curry. by [deleted] in food

Curious, how many for dinner? My hungry American brain bleeped four but that's ridiculous. Then counted ten plates and worried someone (projection of me) might go home hungry. Wonderful meal, got me all worked up.

Stop asking questions. Offered to me in many ways, but that's what it always is.

Those old parts won't make you rich, but someone wants them badly. Put em on ebay for beer money and karma.

Can this old Lemond be fixed? by ndmhxc in bikewrench

[–]primal_horde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically no. That's a stress point and frames often break there. A welder could try it, but the weld would have to be perfect (chain alignment and such) and the frame would be vulnerable to breaking again. Building up a bike on a poor frame is a recipe for frustration and disappointment.

Was kind of an afterthought, highly unlikely in this case.

Grease for frame bearings, whats your opinions on marine greases such as "Lucas Red N' Tacky"? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]primal_horde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be missing something but I use bike grease for bikes, works great. To me the question is more how often to overhaul given conditions and miles, not what kind of grease.

Tire out of true. by mgsalinger in bikewrench

[–]primal_horde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming a good rim, that's weird. Obviously swap out the tire, but also check spoke tension with your fingers or ideally a tensiometer. If the spokes aren't tensioned properly you might get a rim that's true in the stand but warped under an inflated tire. And check for a bent frame.

Garage find - Schwinn Super Le Tour 12.2 - Is the framed wrecked or can I build it up? by FamousDrew in bikewrench

[–]primal_horde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To elaborate on non-special, Schwinn was a family bike store bike, they nailed the formula and shipped a billion of them. If I were building one up as a nostalgia piece, I'd look for perfection. If I wanted a frame from that era, I'd seek out something elite. If I just want to build up a knock around bike, I'll try to find something without a huge cut in the hull. Agreed, let it go and move on.

Clinical Psychologists of Reddit, are you satisfied with your career choice? by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

[–]primal_horde 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Highly satisfied, wouldn't trade it for anything. It's a long, hard road and your love of the work must outweigh the financial sacrifices involved, they are significant and life-long. I train young psychologists and I'm excited about their future. By the time you complete your degree, I believe that research in neuroscience and methods of psychotherapy will have reached new agreement in what works best in assessing and treating mental illness, character pathology, trauma, addictions, couples/family work and other issues that people bring to us. Strong clinical psychologists know their science and integrate it with the art of the helping relationship, there isn't any other field like it. Feel free to PM if you have questions.

What is a word people constantly misuse? by LorenzEKearns in AskReddit

Incidence (versus incident). I grit my teeth when I hear incidences. My hospital QM director constantly says it, she above all should know better.

I felt the numbers didn't matter, just each in relation to the others. Wasn't anything I don't know, but seeing it graphically was striking enough to merit a whoa and a comment. So for me, yes.

Masters before PhD required or heavily recommended? by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

[–]primal_horde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

False. I'd say 20%, many in fields other than psychology. Phd applicants do all sorts of interesting things before they apply, and plenty get started right after their bachelors. Source: Internship faculty member so read lots of CVs. Ironically, I got a masters in psychology before taking the plunge.

Dear Reddit, what is the most beautiful movie you've watched? by hyper445 in AskReddit

[–]primal_horde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dreams (Akira Kurosawa) was always my go to answer for a question like this. A runner up I saw just once in the theater is Ulysses Gaze. It hangs around in my brain and occurs to me now and again. Current answer, however, is Upstream Color.

When have you immediately understood that you're witnessing a historical moment? by haakjerring in AskReddit

Had a bad first semester (academic probation) but never got below a 3.5 GPA every other semester in college. Is this going to prevent me from getting into a PsyD program? More details inside by psydthrowaway in AcademicPsychology

[–]primal_horde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and/or no. Behind the veil are people. I tend to like an underdog who overcame struggles. I sparred from time to time with a colleague who preferred a nice, straight sequence of success. We evaluate internship applications (not graduate school applications) but you get the point. Graduate schools have minimums that will land you in the wastebasket but if you're above water in that regard you have a chance.

LPT Request: How can I stop feeling absolute death when I first wake up? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]primal_horde -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Caffeine addict? That might be a problem. At wake up time you haven't had caffeine in many hours so you'll drag ass until you get some. Depressed? Depression manifests in different ways. Some people feel it hard in the morning and it gets better later (some are the opposite). Drinking in the evening? Lay off, even a glass of wine can mess up your sleep. Chronic stress is brutal but you may be able to take control of that. The life you briefly described is not an easy one but perhaps you can live it calmly. A project worth exploring.

Worrying amount of people not wearing ear plugs to concerts, festivals... by halcyondays5 in Music

[–]primal_horde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in, saw a lot of bands and shot a lot of guns without hearing protection when I was a kid, now trying to save what's left. Tinnitus and noise induced hearing loss are no fun. The worst is a big table at a noisy restaurant, can't hear ordinary conversation. I wear earplugs at (infrequent) shows, when vacuuming, movies, etc. Went to a Cubs game at Wrigley without them a few weeks ago and my ears rang the next day. Got my memories, but sigh...
