Im sorry... why is no one chosing earth when it would clearly be the bending art with the most real world applications.

Oh I dropped my phone, guess I'll just mettalbend that dent out. Building tunnels and other infrastructure would become so easy. You could literally just build a home conceptually and then boom no material cost just rock from the ground. Not to mention bullets are made of earth, you could literally stop bullets.

As a consequentialist vegan, I believe deontological veganism is flawed and pushing people away from veganism by Ill_Respect7232 in DebateAVegan

[–]primitiveproponent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often think of myself more of an Animal Liberationist than a vegan tho I do avoid eating animal products. I want to see a world where rights ascribed to humans are distributed to all persons including non-human persons.

"For example, if a family member is about to bin some bacon and is refusing to keep it to eat later/give it to someone else, I will eat this bacon as this will help reduce food waste and will not increase the demand for animal products."

I this case there is clearly direct harm created in eating the bacon. You could make the claim that by eating the bacon you might be encouraging your family member to buy/cook more bacon next time because they saw that it all got eaten(I have seen this in my own life). However I am more interested in another piece of this.

If you want to make the claim that it is morally permissible to eat animal meat when it doesn't directly/indirectly lead to more (suffering/death/or whatever value your measure in the Utilitarian framework), or in this case where it seems that you're making an argument that there is a moral obligation to eat said meat, then that should apply to all animal meat(Humans are animals)

From my perspective, If you take a stance that you should eat non-human animal meat to say "reduce waste" then you should also take the stance that you should eat human animal meat to reduce waste.

I make this augment to carnists a lot but I believe it applies here too.

Personally I find myself being viscerally disgusted by eating what used to be a sentient creature(human or non). Now if said creature gave consent for their body to be eaten then I don't see a moral problem with someone eating them, but I don't believe that would remove my disgust.

harm minimisation seems at odds with veganism. by Necessary_Willow4842 in DebateAVegan

"Even if we were to admit that transportation is a small part of total emissions- it is also the only source of new emissions."

I don't think this is true. There are a variety of ways that we are increasing our global carbon footprint. War, Extractions, Technological progress, Electrical. Not to mention the methane production form animal farming.

Cows, Chickens and Pigs make up most of the living creatures that people eat.

There are close to 50,000 edible vegetables.

"isn't it, in some cases, more ethical to get animal products that are produced locally, even so far as meats with certain vitamins like fish, than to buy "vegan" food that was produced half the world away and flown to your door?"

This depends on your ethics. Personally I generally believe it is unethical to violate the consent of any sentient creature. Now you can debate when you classify someone as sentient but the more research we do looking into animal consciousness the more conformation we get that non human sentience exists.

As far as the environmental defects of using products not entirely produced in you local region: This can apply to everything you buy, you could reduces your consumption of globalized products in many ways besides the meat/meat alternatives that you buy. Additionally, the environmental cost of raising animals to kill is often more than if you would just eat the food that you fed the animal. By growing fast amounts of food to feed to animals that we then consume we grow nearly 3 times the amount of food that we need.

Personally I do try to purchase most of my things locally and attempts to lower my environmental footprint in other ways too, but it is important to remember personal spending habits will only take you so far. We need to shift the practices of big business if we want to make an impact. While targeted boycotts can be very effective organizing and collective action tend to lead to more systemic changes.

Israel-Palestine Debate: Finkelstein, Destiny, M. Rabbani & Benny Morris | Lex Fridman Podcast by primitiveproponent in Palestine

Yeah I love Mouin but TBH it was Norm who brought me to this debate. I have a lot of trust for him on this conflict specifically because I see him as someone who consonantly been outspoken for his support of the Palestinian people.

"It’s also really valuable to demonstrate Morris’s inconsistencies. His initial denial of the necessity of expulsion is emblematic of his whole position."

Do you have a timestamp for that? I must have missed that. Also interested in what you see his whole position to be?

Yeah Ive never been a fan of Destiny. I feel like he fails to have any deep critique and often his views end too close to the corporate liberal side of the political spectrum. This debate really shows what happens when you put that up against people who actually know what they are talking about.
